Southern Chile's Calbuco volcano erupted on Wednesday for the first time in nearly half a century, spewing a giant funnel of ash high into the sky and prompting authorities to declare a state of emergency. Officials ordered an evacuation for a 20-kilometer radius around the volcano and the Interior ministry rushed in the army to temporarily take control of the province of Llanquihue and the town of Puerto Octay. I can see it now, CFK says that it is the British drilling in the FALKLANDS that set this volcano off.

Part of my wife's family has come to stay with us here in Santiago as they live on the lake not too far from the evacuations.
Normally the majority of the ash will end up drifting to Argentina.

I left Santiago last night, just before this, I think. I probably should not have remarked that Chile seemed remarkable calm during my visit. Yes, there was the flooding in the north but I felt hardly a tremor the whole time I was there which was unusual. The only unsettling experience was leaving the hotel to be greeted by screaming hordes of fans. Not mine, of course, but for a moment they seemed to mistake me for Ed Sheeran.

@4 I hope their home is safe. Good to know they got out safely.

Scary and unpredictable nature. I am hoping for no victims and not too much damages.

Oh dear, I hit a nerve there I think, never mind sweetie I am still scrubbing the seagull shit off my tin roof. The nerve of them flying all the way from Argentina to shit on my roof. CFK says that the FALKLANDS belong to Argentina because the birds migrate here.
