Alejandro Betts' Malvinas veteran pension turns into controversy

Saturday, July 4th 2015 - 05:20 UTC
Full article 95 comments

Falklands born, Argentine citizen Alejandro Betts rejected statements published in Clarin which described his 'Malvinas veteran' pension as 'controversial' and admitted he was surprised, when not startled by the headline display the news was given by the Buenos Aires daily in reference to his activity during the 1982 South Atlantic conflict. “....one of the requisites to collect the veteran's pension is to have effectively been at the Malvinas Operations Theatre”

    Hear that?

Every Falkland Islander over the age of 32 can collect the pension.

Yep, everyone is an Argentine according to Argie logic. I would request that everyone of working age in 1982 send a letter to TMBOA for said pension.

    I'm guessing that's US$1,000 per year? Over 23,000 people.... 9,000 that didn't even fight!

So the government wastes US$9 million a year. That would employ more than a 100 teachers per year in my country...... probably triple or quadruple that in Argentina.

Wow all those kids in the slums could be actually gaining a real future..... except people like Alex Betts need their 30 pieces of silver.

I believe he fullfills the statutory requirements for an Argentine Veteran's Pension. I agree with some here, he deserves his pension from an Argentine point of view. As from those loyal to Her Mayesty, also these are his pieces of silver and he is entitled to them too.

That's $13000 per month actually, not per annum, which makes it even worse.
He's not a veteran in any sense of the word and considering how badly genuine Argentine veterans have been cheated by their government, they have genuine reason to feel vexed.
He's a traitor, but a very useful traitor.

One of my managers was a Marine Commando in 42 Commando and did three tours of N. Ireland.

He always said that the only thing he was ever concerned about were the laughingly called 'army' using their rabbit rifles fitted with a sound moderator. You would be on duty and without any warning whatsoever one of you details would go down having been hit by a soft lead 0.22rf lr bullet. No-one died as far as he knew from this action but it caused a fair amount of unease.

Betts of course is lying through his teeth regarding the risk he was taking, a risk brought about by himself turning his back on his pregnant wife and child for an argie tart.

He has earned his place in argie society: he really is one of them. Despicable arsehole that he is.

He is lying. Quite a lot of the population of Stanley lived through the war, in town, and say, despite the circumstances, it wasn't that bad i.e. bullets flying all over the place, bombs going off in the middle of town. Civilians working for the military do not receive a military pension.
He wasn't even a spy. He is just a sad, misguided idiot, grasping at anything he can get his hands on. The RG government use him as an example to bolster their false version of events throughout history. There are far more deserving people than he, of the rights to a military pension.

A pension of 13,000 pesos a month? That would almost put him in the “rich list” esp. for provincial Arg. I know a 30 y.o who after studying for years now works as a computer programmer in Resistencia (awful place admittedly) for just 8,000 a month. I would guess for pension purposes he's classed as a general like the British KGB traitors George Blake and Kim Philby.

To be a veteran, surely you need to have been involved in some way , to defend / fight , or be involved with the military or civilian services,

DID he actually serve in the war in any capacity,

if he did, what side did he fight on, and what government did he give his loyalty to,

    1, Argentina=Argentina pays his pension,
    2, Falklands==the Falkland's pays his pension,
3, British , ==the British pays his pension,
    4. Malvinas==then the Malvinas pays his pension,

    simple you surprisingly complicated....lol
p/s, if he fought for no one ,then no one pays his pension,

I may have this entirely wrong...lol

Hardly, Paulie. He fits in just fine with you lot. Nasty, slithery, backstabbing and stupid.
No one was envious of his getting well in with his colonising masters, he thought they would win and he wanted in with them. Along with running away from a legal marriage to marry his girlfriend, makes him a bigamist and then he thinks he deserves a military pension? Come on! I knew you were dumb, but are you really as dumb as you appear to be? He is effectively stealing money from far more deserving people!
He was and is a coward, first and foremost. He was not a soldier. He did not fight. He never faced an enemy (unless you count the RG forces). He underwent no hardship. His life was never in danger. He is just a lying, bigamist coward.

All Falland Islands pensions are paid for from the Falkland Islands public purse. Not being old enough, I don't get a penny, yet. And, just to piss you off, I will also receive a British Pension, as well, when I reach pensionable age. I'll have earned the right to three pensions!! Plus my private income! There are a lot us like this!

    Paulecedron:

List please the money we Islanders receive from the UK - ie british taxpayers please?

    LIST IT

Or Shut up you silly little tit.

Do not list the defence Cost as it is just half of 1% of the overall UK defence Budget - and that money would be spent if the military are here - in wongawonga land or timbucktoo -or Germany or UK or exercising in Canada - it makes NO difference. In fact whilst here they can do joint services live training exercises that they would have difficulty being able to do anywhere else in the world.

My elderly parents were in Stanley all the time with mr Betts- they were never afraid and there were no Br bullets to dodge- just sometimes at night triggerhappy scared young Arg conscripts would fire at cats in the dark etc and shot up the Roman catholic Ministers bathroom loo one night - he was NOT amused!- and luckily not performing at the time!
Bettsy boy writes a lot of lies and fantasy stories - but he would - he is now an Argentine!

But come on - LIST these funds we get from the UK taxpayers please - LIST THEM

@21. Why would anybody BRITISH be jealous of betts. Probably be best if he doesn't fall into the hands of BRITISH authorities. He has now, undoubtedly, committed treason. Doesn't matter where he was or what nationality he thought he had. Look up who can commit treason and under what circumstances. Under English & Welsh law, Betts is already guilty. Who would be jealous of a criminal. At least he can thank his stars that England has abolished the death penalty. Unless the UK was at war. With argieland, for instance.
@31. Shall we give Pablo a hint? From time to time, the EU grants money to the Falkland Islands. It is possible that there may be money from Britain in such grants. Look at this; http://en.mercopress.com/2015/03/02/falkland-islands-included-in-european-funds-for-environmental-projects
Is it true that the Falklands share of the grant will be used to plant minefields in an attempt to exterminate a well-known South Atlantic pest?

    “UPDATE

On Sunday and Monday March 10-11, 2013 a vote takes place asking the Falkland Islanders if they want the UK taxpayer to continue forking out almost £100,000 per annum for every family living on these desolate isles, when at home we have a massive unemployment problem and other important underfunded issues. No doubt the answer will be “Yes”, and this is understandable from the point of view of those who live there. When free gifts of such ample proportions are offered without ties, except a declaration of loyalty to the crown, it is a no-brainer. This funding, and much more has been going on for over 30 years.”

And , what we spend on ALL our islands, the Hebrides, Ascension, St Helena, Pitcairn, the Falklands we spend willingly. If the Falklands didnt have a beligerent untrustworthy basket case of thieves as a neighbour we wouldnt need to spend anything at all. The Falklands is an ideal place to train our troops, airmen and neighbours anyway , so we are quite happy with that. As soon as the oil gushes the cost of the military will easily be covered.

Paulie- We are still waiting for the FACTS and FIGURES - not just what you read some journalist wrote in a paper hardly anybody reads!

As I have pointed out to you and MANY MANY others have stated- including British Politicians and Military Advisors - There would be NO savings of £100 million to the British taxpayer if the Br Forces were not here - because they would just be based back in UK-Europe etc.
I estimate- and I know as I am involved in this area- About £500,000 a year is what comes into the Falklands economy from the prescence of the Br Forces. No that is £500 per family if you want to put it that way!!
Oh and by the way We Islanders PAY the British Min of Defence £3 million a year in flight tickets towards the cost of their airlink.
WE Islanders also contribute approx. £75 million a year to the British economy in goods exported from the UK to the Islands. Also we contribute about £5 million a year into the British wages economy from the hire and employment of people from UK - who bank a lot of that money in UK and spend it on their house mortgages etc etc.

So come on then WHERE are your FACTS?

    @ 54 Englander

An employee of mine had something like that on his forehead and we all begged him to go and have it checked: it took us over three months to get him to do it.

Very sadly he was already too late, it was as deeply embedded INTO his skin as it stood proud of his skin.

He lasted two years, terrible pity. He did so enjoy his walks in the summer which it was thought was the starter.

That was in 1992, perhaps things have improved since then, but probably not as he will be treated by an argie.

Poor Paul. Unemployed and broke but just accepts that his governments spends MORE on people who never fought in the Falklands than the UK spends there.

    MORE!!!!!!!

US$108 million that isn't going to you or your family Paul but to people like Alex Betts.

Again, Argentina spends MORE on pensions to non-combatants from 32 years ago than the UK does NOW!!!

    MORE!

I know as a Peronist you are told not to criticise or examine your government so just in case you missed it..... MORE.

And your country is so more. But it spends MORE.

The UK budget is 2-3 times your entire country's GDP but you spend MORE on subsidies to losers that didn't do anything.

    MORE!

Now please continue with your inadequate and extremely limited insults. They really hurt.... ouch?

    Bahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

    MORE!

Paulie, come on. I'm really surprised that a guy with as much political savvy as you (not to mention your profound knowledge of the Falkland Islands and our way of life), is unable to answer the simple question of how much money, aid if you will, the Islands receive from the public purse of Great Britain. Is it as much as RGland gets in aid from Britain? Considering your country is such a political big hitter, it amazes me that you actually need it. And when you have such a massive downer on the British I am surprised you haven't started some kind of mission to stop receiving aid from a bunch of pirates! I know we have. Every year we petition the UK government to stop sending you money. (When I say “we”, I'm talking about the Great British public and we Islanders).
So please, do tell, what do the Falkland Islands receive in aid from the UK?
It's not that hard. Even you can find that out. :-)

Ignoramus-if the defence money wasn't spent in the Falklands, it would still be spent on the military somewhere else.

You will find the British taxpayer is more concerned about benefits paid out to people who come here from Europe, than the costs of defending the Islanders from a bunch of batshit crazy fascists. Remember idiota, the forces are an employer so Brits are getting jobs out of the military money.

As Betts now took part in the 1982 war, perhaps he possesses the tactical knowledge to lead another invasion of the Falklands.

it does not mean a shite.

now, try to use that little brain of yours and try to extrapolate it to the uk case.
it is the same, you nabos.

a good number of argentinians have emigrated to europe, most of all france, spain and italy, in the last years.

and millions of englanders have emigrated to spain, france and italy too.

so, the uk receives hundreds of thousands of african, bulgarian, pakistani, etc. immigrants while expels hundreds of thousands of britons.

In fact, I was thinking about buying an Island or two in the Aegean myself.

I heard that a lot of them are going to be coming on the market reaallll cheap, very soon.

I also hear that you have a real problem with drugs cartels re-locating to Argentina these days.

Probably explains the “en-masse” you’re talking about.

By the way, Chile beat Argentina on penalties 4-1, winning the Copa América.

    Paulie, your words:-

    1. “an yet they are a burden for the taxpayer of those countries.”
“guess they have more credibility than a parasite”
    2. “the best the useless british government can do with that money, is to buy proper food to the millions of people who eat that shite from the food-banks.”
    3. “you should ask the honest, impoverished british taxpayer how much they spend to support you all.”

Parasite? Phrase 2 stands for itself. Phrase 3? Your words, I remind you. Calling me names won't work. Saying that I take money from the British government/tax-payer? I paid a lot of tax in the UK and never once went to a foodbank, neither did I ever claim unemployment benefit, I've never been unemployed or sponged off the government.
A small point and take it for what it's worth. The only reason the military are here in any force is because of the neighbours, before 1982 (just before you shot UN Resolution 2065 out of the water) there were only 32 members of the Royal Marines here.
You are the reason the British government spends money in maintaining a presence here. If you learnt to behave like a proper democratic country instead of the two-bit semi-dictatorship that you are, things might be a bit different.
The fact remains that Alex Betts doesn't deserve a military pension any more than I deserve a Spanish pension. He was a coward, a bigamist and a dupe of the junta. He continues to be a dupe of your government and a disgrace to humanity. I feel sorry for your veterans who have to put up with this kind of idiocy. I really do.
