Cristina Fernandez points her guns to the US and 'vulture funds', but no word on the Falklands

Full article 37 comments

Addressing the UN General Assembly, President Cristina Fernandez accused the United States of 'protecting' a former Argentine intelligence agent, blasted the speculative or 'vulture funds', gave details of the Iran-US-Argentina dealings and to everybody's surprise did not mention a word about the Falkland Islands sovereignty claim. “Most probably a more tolerant and respectful attitude towards the population of the Falkland Islands can be expected from now onwards.”

We shall just have to wait and see, won't we?

Or Maybe it's because after 12 years they are further away than ever from their 'Malvinas' Objective. Mentioning it would cement how inept, impotent and useless her government has been and the failure their current strategy. She can lie about her country's economy, she can try and link the AMIA with the 'hold outs', but she can't lie about the Falklands, that's too much of a fairytale for anyone to believe.

“Most probably a more tolerant and respectful attitude towards the population of the Falkland Islands can be expected from now onwards.”

Highly unlikely. I'll bet that once CFK reads the articles that mention her oversight, her government will go back to perpetuating the Malvinas Lie, with extra vitriol to make up for the oversight.

When Argentina offers to take the case to the ICJ (one of the two fairest solutions to their invented dispute), or acknowledges the Malvinas claim as based on a lie (the other solution), then we might see “a more tolerant and respectful attitude”.

I think it's the fact that what I have been saying all along is now more standard policy: the Falklands are not a country, so they are not entitled to any negotiations with Argentina.

Argentina should drop the claim to the islands, let those people get on with it. But Falklanders have no rights to seek dialogue with Argentina on any of the issues they constantly accuse Argentina of failing to negotiate. Only sovereign governments can negotiate with Buenos Aires.

(and the fact is... discussing fisheries and ecology is not exactly something Argentina is interested in discussing, we already control all the waters beyond the Falklands water economic zone... why would we sabotage our own fisheries just so the Falklanders can get more fish?)

CFK's policy to get The Falklands at all costs has failed miserably. She staked a lot on this one policy and she will not want to associate herself with such a huge fail. Just as she fakes illness every time there is a disaster in Argentina.

They had to use a dozen janitors with square mouthed shovels to scrape up all the bullshit she blurted out on the stage.
Maybe someone can sabotage the GPS on her plane and it lands in port Stanley instead of BA on her way back. You can keep her.

7 Nostril, shut up, you are embarrasing SA. SA leaders are a joke, KFC, MADuro, no money Pepe, and that Caribean creep Castro. What a bunch of cretins leading failed nations and blaming everyone but themselves. You have to go to Zimbabwe and North Korea to find anyone worse.

“Most probably a more tolerant and respectful attitude towards the population of the Falkland Islands can be expected from now onwards.”

Interesting idea. Looking forward then to Filmus getting the sack.

By the way, the disrespectful route has lasted 12 years, and has caused massive mistrust of all things Argentine in the Falklands. Don't expect a change of policy in BA to be met with overwhelming gratitude and a rush of fraternal hugs. The intention will be the same (unwilling colonisation) it is just the attempt will be approached differently.

But, recognising the right to self determination, that might change things a bit.

Perhaps the Pope should suggest she gives that a try.

@1. “Most probably a more tolerant and respectful attitude towards the population of the Falkland Islands can be expected from now onwards.”

If this were to be the case, I would simply suggest to the Islanders, especially the younger ones, to ”beware of Greeks (argies) bearing gifts”.

There should be reminders of the argie plan, following the Falklands War, to be friendly and helpful. Until Kirchner (deceased) realised that he was getting no closer to sovereignty. That plan occupied about 10 years. So do not trust argies for a minimum of 25 years. Importantly, don't forget to contact Timerman in 2034 to have a laugh over his prediction.

Seems like the penny might have dropped at last that the last twelve years of harassing the islands have all been for nothing. However big cats with spots never change them. Perhaps one day soon we might find her sitting with a gun in her hand with a nice neat hole in the side of her head. We can but hope

To have a president like Dilma, Lula or Cristina is a miserable curse for any nation. Sort of a warped Robin Hood mentality of stealing almost everything from the poor and depositing it in their Swiss bank accounts...

It appears the islanders don't like when Argentina speaks about getting back the Islas Malvinas but they begin throwing fits when CFK does not say a word about it in the U.N.
Relax, people. Cristina had other priorities. The islands aren't going anywhere and our claim is still active.

@17 I have just put in a claim for your house. Its built on land that was passed down to me by my family, Amerindians and you are illegally squatting on it. I intend to clear the site, demolishing your house the cost of which will be paid for by the court sequestering your bank account. Since you are guilty of a serious crime I am also asking the court to eject you and send you back to your homeland that you are so fond of.

    @17 Are you bonkers?

Argentina will never colonise The Falkland Islands. Nothing has changed and nothing will change.

CFK is just distancing herself from a 12 year campaign that failed spectacularly. Getting The Falklands was her number one policy and she has wasted a fortune of Argentines money on her hopeless dream. Still it kept the masses distracted while she stole their money.

Cristina Fernandez points her guns to the US,

Apparently she has now realised that pressurising the brits is not working,

So she will try Obama, and hope to pressure him before he leaves office,

Scaring the Americans might just work,
She has secret weapons now, so lets see what happens,

After all, what could the Americans possibly do to this most powerful Argentina, besides obliterating the place…

Mrs Kirchner has obviously lost interest in the Falkland Islands which is a bit disappointing. Even so Argentinians should take note that dropping their claim to the Falkland Islands does not mean that the UK's claim to Patagonia will be relinquished. Patagonia and any remaining squatters will be part of the UK within the next 25 years.

Sure, maybe we should import CFK to run Brazil - she'd be cheap as she's not worth her weight in shit , now that Dilma (and Lula ) have truly fucked it up.
As for Ministers, we could always beg Maduro to help us out with our finances, and who knows, Evo Morales to look after agriculture - but he must plant 'some' food, not only the 'coca' plant.

    @ 28 Englander
Very true, just because CFK has given up Argentina’s baseless claims to the S. Atlantic/Antarctic, does not affect UK’s legitimate claim to Patagonia/TDF and the intervening maritime spaces.

All of which are on the Falklands continental shelf and much closer to the Falklands than to BA.

Not to mention the British settlement of the territories 150 years ago, long before Argentina conquered them, and subsequently implanted a foreign Creole population there.

Within 25 years and they will be ours again.
