United States President Barack Obama promised that his final State of the Union address on Tuesday night would be something very different from the six that had preceded it. And, he made good on that promise, - abandoning the traditional list of policy proposals to instead make an extended case against the vision being offered by 2016 Republican front-runner Donald Trump. Jan 13th, 2016 - 07:08 am - Link - Report abuse 0America could -- and would -- re-assert the fundamental goodness at the heart of who we are as a people.
Obama's final words sought to drive that point home. “That’s the America I know,” he insisted. “That’s the country we love. Clear-eyed. Big-hearted. Optimistic that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word. That’s what makes me so hopeful about our future.”
Obama's words clearly contrast those of YB ...and Trump.
Great speech from Obama talking about the US of A I know. Sharp contrast with the views of the American losers posting their bile here. Well said Mr Tempest.
Jan 13th, 2016 - 09:48 am - Link - Report abuse 0It was a fine speech. It is the Americans I know, big-hearted, generous, optimistic etc.
Jan 13th, 2016 - 09:52 am - Link - Report abuse 0A friend of mine in D.C. once said to me that there is no real power with the elected politicians in the U.S. anymore; the power is with the few unelected super-rich. The problem is that there is no real will to curtail that power because a ridiculous number of Americans are under the impression that they are part of that rich elite or soon will be. It is a misconception born out of a belief that money is the measure of your worth.
#2 Excuse me? De-pluralize that please. I believe I an fact, am the only American posting, or was, here. Or at least one who can describe their surroundings in details and I don't believe that I post jingoist bile, nor ridicule those who believe different than I.
Jan 13th, 2016 - 11:24 am - Link - Report abuse 0Great post Troy. I for the first time did not see the SOTU.
Was not aimed in your direction Captain. Just recently there have been a couple of braggers on here claiming to be yanks… I only found this place recently because I navigate as a guide in the Southern Oceans in tbe summer.
Jan 13th, 2016 - 11:48 am - Link - Report abuse 0What a pity Obama never spoke like that when he started his presidency.
Jan 13th, 2016 - 11:49 am - Link - Report abuse 0I remember feeling that at last the American people had done the right thing in electing him and looked forward to the changes he would make: breaking the mould so to speak.
What a disappointment he has been with so many missed opportunities.
Still, he will be gone soon.
Some say he is weak and made America weak,
Jan 13th, 2016 - 11:56 am - Link - Report abuse 0other say he has been great,
yesterday Iran captured and arrested 10 American sailors and the two boats of their coast,
considering the USA is abt to reduce that trade Bann,
it was not very clever,
but perhaps the two things have absolutely nothing to do with each other,
and Iran was just being Iran,
and im reading it wrong,
still,
the speech seem to go down well,
I don't know anyone who watch it.
Jan 13th, 2016 - 12:28 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Odumbo is as unpopular and thought less of as Carter was in his last year.
Nobody is going to miss him.
Iran anyone? anyone?
He's an idiot.
Obama has been neutralised by the right wing, no doubt. He has been good at policy and is a great orator, but had his hands tied. If America elects a Republican or a Democrat next time, the same thing will happen. America is a deeply divided society paralysed and slowly but surely loosing its mojo. Its a sad sight and bad for humanity because America has sometimes been a force for good. If a society is paralysed like this it cannot make progress
Jan 13th, 2016 - 12:50 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@9 You have it exactly right. Government has become one big pissing contest deeply divided. It is played like a sport of egos rather than serving the majority.
Jan 13th, 2016 - 12:55 pm - Link - Report abuse 09. People were saying the exact same thing when Carter was Prez.
Jan 13th, 2016 - 01:17 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Then Reagan fixed it.
Don't worry the USA has a great ability to self correct.
We're just beginning a decade (s) long upswing like has never been witnessed.
We are capable of reinventing ourselves quickly using politics, technology and innovation to chart whatever course is necessary. Thinks are OK now, the politics part is weak at the moment however. Expect that to change.
Jan 13th, 2016 - 01:37 pm - Link - Report abuse 0”America has been through big changes before — wars and depression, the influx of immigrants, workers fighting for a fair deal, and movements to expand civil rights. Each time, there have been those who told us to fear the future; who claimed we could slam the brakes on change, promising to restore past glory if we just got some group or idea that was threatening America under control. And each time, we overcame those fears. We did not, in the words of Lincoln, adhere to the dogmas of the quiet past. Instead we thought anew, and acted anew. We made change work for us, always extending America's promise outward, to the next frontier, to more and more people.”
Jan 13th, 2016 - 02:00 pm - Link - Report abuse 0It is true that Trump is running a fear campaign. Small-minded, inward looking Americans fearful of change.
What is to be admired about the U.S. is the optimism and embracing change and progress. When did that become wrong?
I wonder if the US has ever had a president who was quite so effective in polarising and dividing that country.
Jan 13th, 2016 - 02:23 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I wouldnt characterize Trump's campaign as one based in fear. He says some wild things once in a while to pander to certain segments but that is not out of the ordinary. A lot of people are tired of political correctness so they are amused by him going against that trend whether or not they agree with the content. Also, after years of percieved indecisiveness and weakness showing a little back bone is popular.
Jan 13th, 2016 - 03:12 pm - Link - Report abuse 013 You have it, in the US of A everything is about fear, especially right wing politics. Mostly fear of a dying protestant society being swamped by immigrants and protecting yourself with a firearm. On the other side the Democrats seem to be seeking to free the country from the grip of big business and create a fairer more caring society. Trump is just saying what the bigots are thinking.
Jan 13th, 2016 - 03:28 pm - Link - Report abuse 0No one cares much about legal immigrants. We are all immigrants or decendants of immigrants. Its the flouting of the law by illegal ones that have us upset. It has little to do with fear.
Jan 13th, 2016 - 03:39 pm - Link - Report abuse 016. Spoken like a delusional Prog. Any facts there or are you fine just posting your emotions?
Jan 13th, 2016 - 07:17 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Democrats have never brought progress only misery to those that voted for them. You only need to look at the cities and states that have voted Dem the past 40 yrs. Highest Crime, Highest Unemployment, Highest Taxes, Most on Gov't assistance...and on and on and its been Generational. I give you Baltimore, Detroit, LA, Oakland all Dem all terrible...
Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.

Opinions.
today the daily express says the latest polls put Mr trump well in the lead for the nominations.
go trump.

22. It just shows how weak and inept Odumbo is. He's a laughing stock and quite delusional.
Jan 14th, 2016 - 02:17 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Tick Tock
I hope he doesn't cause any more damage in his last year.
What a pickle for the US public. A socialist or professional liar in one party's choice......and in the other a fear mongering, inconsistent xenophobic, yet....classless joke....or, someone who believe Winston Churchill could have been the President of the USA by the shear fact he himself is running.
Jan 14th, 2016 - 03:13 pm - Link - Report abuse 0But, like it matters, the Demosnots, Democommies, Demofools and Retarticans,Reptilicans, Roboticans (please choose your favorite) plan on brokering the conventions if they do not get whom they want in the polls for the conventions. So much for the power of the majority in the USA.
Got hair Fred?
vOice,
Jan 14th, 2016 - 03:41 pm - Link - Report abuse 0You sound a lot like vEstige today, what with teasing YB about his hair, calling him Fred, etc.
BTW, it's sheer not shear, that's for sheep.
'Trumpeting' Republicans ARE an embarrassment, but the Democrats have actual experienced politicians running, instead of shameless pitchmen.
Voice, V0ice or VOice are you addressing?
Jan 14th, 2016 - 07:23 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Bahahahahaha!!
Sheer, shear or Cher? Oh dear, oh me O my.
Shear does imply to cut hair, if the hair is to be had.

Probably in Europe or Canada, wherever they or their parents were exiled to.
Exactly, they do not even share the same believes as I've always said.
