Falklands' population in 'constrictive' trend, says Argentine team on the field

Saturday, February 6th 2016 - 06:22 UTC
Full article 135 comments

The Falklands' population composition can be described as 'constrictive' since there is a tendency to ageing in the population pyramid, in other words there are more elderly people than children. Comments belong to a member of an Argentine team of geography and migration experts from a university in Santa Fe province (Universidad Nacional del Litoral, UNL), who have been granted scholarships to collect such data from the Islands, based on a project the team presented. The UK is “ extremely frustrated” Ecuador refuses to dialogue.

Hahaha, well talk about Karma. Of course, the UK has nothing to negotiate with Argentina in the Falklands, but neither does Ecuador have anything to negotiate with the UK. As far is that matter is concerned, it is settled. Assange made it to the Ecuadorian Embassy and that's the end of the story. Nothing to negotiate and they can shout and scream in Quito all day... cased closed.

“According to the data managed by the UNL team, 55% of the Islands population out of 2.840, are Islanders, that is they were born in the Malvinas and have full Falklands' status, with all the benefits that implies.”

A team from an Argentine university acknowledges that the Falkland Islanders have 'status'. Not a bunch of usurping squatters any more?

@3. Relevance to this article? But you're right about one thing. The case is indeed closed. Assange can step out of Ecuador's flat any time he likes. To be arrested and tossed in a police cell. Decisions will then have to be made. Should he be promptly extradited to Sweden? In that case, will Sweden undertake to add a year to any sentence to take account of the penalties for breach of bail OR will Sweden undertake to return him to the UK at the appropriate time so that he can serve 12 months here?

In my opinion it is encouraging that some Argentines have taken their heads out of the sand and realise that the Islanders are not all implanted, (implanting clearly implying that they are ALL transported from the UK, with none born in the Islands whatsoever). But there is this reference to an aging population, as if no one is ever going to have children in the Islands again.

They are doing some demographic research that appears more scientific than the usual dogmatic/political/indoctrinal shite spewed from peronist politicians.

The trend in the UK, excepting immigration figures, is also toward an ageing population and @2 Skip points out that China have a massive ageing problem.

As the Islands have been used to a low population density for a long time it is hardly going to spell doom for the Islands, especially as just like the past few hundred years migrants to the Islands will marry and have children, not of a wholly British origin.

I'm glad these researchers clocked the contribution that Union Jack Hayward made for the old folks at the QEMH.

I can't help feeling that their assertion that the fertility rate they calculate as low is a load of crap, it may be that people do not want to have huge families for practical and economic reasons, and if the housing stock increases at a gradual rate, why cause difficulties by having lots of children that might have to migrate from the islands?

The Islands are relatively prosperous because their income sustains the population. If that expands too fast it will affect everyone's standard of living.

It's still comparatively a small population that isn't going to explode overnight.

How difficult is that to work out?

Getting harder and harder for those Argentineans (especially those that believe race is paramount in nationality) to claim that Falkland Islanders are in-bred or just English immigrants when there are Eurasian kids running around.

The experience of the Falklands is a good example of how you don't have to have population growth to enjoy significant improvements in wealth and standards of living. And considering that significant crime in the islands is nearly zero, while the crime rates among the chorro nation of Argentina are up in the clouds, there is something else to be said for a mature population.

Hi Troy, hope you've had a good winter thus far.

I actually don't think lack of CT scanner technicians is the most pressing problem there at the moment. I expect that the FIG is going to have to bring in Scotland Yard and possibly some reinforcements for a crackdown, as there is a very unnerving crime-wave going on in Stanley.

The Falklands police have released an official statement and subsequent warning to the would-be perpetrator(s). It appears that someone has been finding lost golf balls on the golf course and clandestinely offering them for resale (I actually wasn't aware that lost balls are considered to remain the property of the original owner; but apparently such is the case).

Can you imagine living in such a dangerous, crime-infested community. I honestly don't know how the poor souls do it.

Argentina was committed to full implementation of the resolution, as it was committed to multilateralism in settling disputes between States. The embargo was a violation of international law. In its own law 24871, Argentina proclaimed the absolute inapplicability of foreign laws that generated extraterritorial effects with the aim of bringing about regime change or that affected another State’s right to self-determination, among other things. It was unconscionable that despite clear international opposition to the embargo, it persisted … MARIA LUIZA RIBEIRO VIOTTI ( Brazil), speaking on behalf of Southern Common Market .. MERCOSUR showed respect for the sovereignty of States and for international law, and it viewed that the embargo ran contrary to the principles of the Unite Nations Charter and international law. In particular, she said, it violated the principle of non-interference in the affairs of other States. The embargo also ran contrary to the principles of justice and human rights, limited and delayed social and economic progress and inhibited the achievement of the Millennium Goals and other development targets.
MERCOSUR therefore regretted the fact that the unilaterally imposed embargo continued unabated, she said. MERCOSUR rejected, in principle, all unilateral and extra-territorial measures, which caused harm to peoples and obstructed regional integration. … Indeed, she concluded, the embargo was “no more than an example of obsolete policies which have no place in today’s world.”

“Argentina must persist with lock , if possible a total blockade ”

You need to awaken from your fantasy dream into reality.

1/-You may nor have noticed but most of your navy doesn't work, so is your blockade to be formed of rowing boats or the kind of shipwreck that fatman sent over?
2/-You may need to be informed that any blockade could soon be blown to kingdom come by Astute class submarines-do you really wish your people to feed the fishes?

“How many lawyers, you need the islands? How many engineers ? How many doctors”

Because you are a village idiot with about two functioning brain cells, you do not realise there are many occupations in the Islands (including Vets, teachers etc) that Islanders can fill because they get sent to UK UNIVERSITIES FOR FREE and return to the Islands.

Just imagine what a mess the Islanders would be in if they sent their youngsters to INFERIOR Argentine universities.

“young people have no future there”

Like most Argentines, you have your ass firmly planted in the 19th century, that's why your country is so backward, much more so than the Falkland Islands.

But I'll give you some credit, 30 to 40 years ago when the Falklands economy was almost solely linked to producing wool, many young Islanders did emigrate, so in that sense at least you are only stuck in the 20th century.

However, you have failed to notice that since 1982, Islanders have become pilots, teachers, vets and there has been a Falkland Island lawyer for at least 30-40 years. There are also engineers and all manner of trades filled by Islanders who have trained in the UK.

Because you have a very simple idea of what actually happens in the islands linked to your simple education system, it shows you up to be the simple village idiot.

A major Argentine flaw is the inability to perform any type of research which you demonstrate admirably.

Our Schools are struggling to cope with ever increasing numbers of children,
and being expanded or planning now for expansion.

New Houses are being built- and occupied as fast as they are built - and there is still a waiting list for housing. STanley is still expanding as fast as it can.

New Power Station planned to cope with bigger Stanley. Oh and people are still living on the farms- camp population now steadied- with more families and small kids than say 15yrs ago.

Maybe they forgot to count all the youngsters away at College and University etc?

The 2012 census was a bit of a b-up. several families were away and not received forms and others here never got the forms!

@80 The difference between the crime rates in Argentistan (massive) and the crime rates in the Falklands (essentially nonexistent) are among the things that the residents appreciate. And that is just a start.

The climatic conditions on the estancias in eastern Tierra del Fuego are not unlike those in the Falklands. Of course, some of the Tierra del Fuego estancias were originally run by the good folks from the Falklands who by and large were made of more solid British stuff than the argentos, hence their ability to more completely enjoy the islands.

Yes, Vestige I am a constitutional monarchist. I'm proud of how stable that system has worked for my country. You refuse to say where you are from but that is your right. I doubt it has been a stable and continuous democracy for as long as my country - few have.

Also I never made a secret of changing my username on here. Did you just realise it? But slow off the mark but then again, no surprise because you usually are. I mean it's been at least a year or more I reckon.

Neither am I racist about my Queen's German ancestry. Unsure why people like you are. Isn't the Dutch Queen from Argentina? And my ancestors were Spanish and Danish. Indeed does that make me royalty because my Danish ancestors changed their surname from Njelson to Nelson? (Did I just give away my surname?)

As for urban living. Not everyone wishes to live in an urban setting like you seem to enjoy. I know for people such as yourself that different ideas and preferences are a difficult concept to accept. But they do exist and it seems the Falkland Islanders are happy with their rural idyllic.

Reality is not just cities. What a narrow perspective you possess.

If Islander craves a more urbanised lifestyle then they could move to Argentina I guess (they seem to get residency easily enough). The opposite isn't so easy thankfully. Guess Argentineans can head to Chubut for their rural idyllic but rarely to The Falklands.

However if Falkland Islanders value their life savings and personal safety then they could always move to the many cities of the UK mainland.

In Argentina it takes apopulation of 100,000 or more to reach a much lower standard. In eg. Mendoza you need an excellent health to survive the main hospital. Anyone who can, attends a private hospital like Hospital Español in Godoy Cruz or Hospital Privado in Av. Mitre, Mendoza.

    1. Argentos want you to think the worthless windswept islands are unfit for human occupation.
    2. Argentos royally bugger everything they touch or just come close to.
    3. Therefore the worthless windswept islands unfit for human occupation should be turned over to the argentos so that they can bugger them further.

    (126) Jo Bloggs (VIK)
    Let's start from the end...:

    1) I miss the Commander too...
    A true oldimer gentleman...
I Think his financial losses on the Engrish Pirate Oil Adventure in the South Atlantic were so big that he has wisely chosen to forget all about us...
    Speaking about shattered dreams...
How's Puerto Estanley Deep Sea Proyect going...?
Didn't you have some coastal property there that was going to make you filthy rich...?

    2) There is only one Think and his enthusiasm is quite constant...

    3) About the coward murder of Royal Marine Addis...
Wasn't you..., Mr. Jo Bloggs, that a couple of years ago told us here at Mercopress that the young lad “Got what was coming to him”...?
I could surely link you to that old comment of yours if you don't remember it...

    127 Think

You say the Commander was a true old time gentleman.
I say true old time gentlemen don't boast about their son rogering as many local women as he can whilst on an overseas military posting; and how those actions are improving the gene pool.'

You say the Commander lost his nerve due to investment losses.
I say that makes no sense for such a tough and salty old dog as he.
I say I think you stopped posting in that persona because even you realised how ridiculous you looked.

You say there is only one Think.
I say true but you also post in the name of numerous other personas.

I say have you got any evidence that Marine Addis was murdered.
Then you referred to a post I sent some time ago.
I say have you got any evidence that Marine Addis was murdered.

You say you could surely provide the link.
I say I am sure you could but that says more about what a sad old git you truly are than anything else.

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....

Your omissions are more interesting than your responses...

    1) Evidently,You didn't become filthy rich selling those properties to the Poms...

    2) Would you care to share with us, what did you mean when you said that Royal Marine Alan Addis....:“Got what was coming to him”...?
Or maybe it is not proper for a Kelper gentleman to boast about four of his Kelper mates murdering a defenceless young lad...?

    @82
“Well crime is kind of difficult when you're in a hamlet”

So is it better to live somewhere in the Falklands when the greatest likelihood of having something stolen is when a Johhny Rook lands nearby or get mugged in Argentina in a more populous location?

So in your mind, a tourist would rather go to Argentina and get mugged because there's more people there?

Have you thought about taking your new found evidence of murder to the British police Think?

They must have missed you when talking to the witnesses.

An argento faulting someone else on matters of rampant criminal behaviour.

    Now THAT is funny.

    @132
    “Well....
... One doesn't want to end as Johnny Biggs, does one?”

Therefore don't go to Argentina on holiday-no murders in Falkland Islands for what, 30 plus years?

At around the same time that Addis disappeared, and Johhny Biggs found in the cookhouse, there was more than one person disappearing in Argentina, about 30,000 I believe.

    @134 Pete Bog,
Think doesn't count the 30,000 because he can't blame them on the British.
    He would if he could.
    malvinista logic.
