In April 2009, Argentina submitted a formal claim to sovereignty over an exceptionally large continental shelf, across hundreds of miles of the sea-bed to the east and south of Argentina. This year, in March, newspapers around the world incorrectly reported the whole Argentine submission had been endorsed. Read full article

Jun 03rd, 2016 - 11:40 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Hey chantapufi, I guess they should have posted the posted the article in Lunfardo, because you obviously can't read...
http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/imoyaro/chopperlaff_zpsamu9towd.gif
I remember this guy...
Jun 04th, 2016 - 12:01 am - Link - Report abuse 0Prof Willetts pointed out that an Overseas Territory is not a form of Free Association and that the UN said in 1960 an associated territory should have the right to determine its internal constitution without outside interference, but the Falklands ultimately is under the control of London.
Unsure what point you are trying to make Voice.
Jun 04th, 2016 - 12:25 am - Link - Report abuse 0Who has claimed it is an associated territory?
And which part of the UK is not under the control of London?
I remember this guy too...
Jun 04th, 2016 - 04:24 am - Link - Report abuse 0Professor Willetts said that the right to self-determination was asserted in the Decolonisation Declaration adopted by the UN General Assembly in December 1960, and that it applies to the Falkland Islanders because it applies to all colonies.
Argentina’s position that the right only exists, “where there is no dispute over sovereignty” was rejected by the UN General Assembly during the debate on the Decolonisation Declaration and again in 2008.
VFoice - Willetts rather changed his tune by 2013. https://falklandstimeline.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/peter-willets-south-atlantic-council.pdf
Jun 04th, 2016 - 05:36 am - Link - Report abuse 0Do try to keep up.
Willetts is the one that seems to keep the South Atlantic Council going and has been, in the main, seen as pro-Argentine. His quandary is, that he is also basically honest. Hard to pigeon-hole.
Willets now recognises that the Falkland Islanders do have the right to self-determination. Now there's honest for you LOL
@5 Sour Grapeserino
Jun 04th, 2016 - 07:36 am - Link - Report abuse 0very good increase,uncontested MARITIME limit,the rest
And again you will mess it up as with all the massive resources you own. The UK don't care about your resources, but you have failed to steal the Falkland Islanders resources.
Remember your attempt in 1982?
Suck that up amigo :-)
Even if you found massive reserves of Gold, it would make no difference, you would still end up in debt.
A TOTAL RECOGNITION of the dispute
So exactly how does that help you?
Your fighter aircraft are turbo prop trainers, your navy has just had another accident with a ship, your historical claim versus the British/Falklands, is virtually non existent, the Falkland Islanders run the Islands, Argentina has NO say over what goes on in the Islands other than sending over flag waving hooligans.
And yet you celebrate.
I expect the fact that the UN consider the area around the Falklands disputed means you will be hot footing it to the ICJ, right?
.NOw uk CAN NOT DO A DAMN thing, without Argentina permission
The Falkland Islanders do exactly what they want on their Islands without Argentine permission-go over there and see for yourself.
Wrong Willetts in photo Mercopress. That's David (2 brains) Willetts, Conservative member of the House of Lords.

As the newspapers incorrectly stated the true position, that meant Bad Reporting , thus backing Argentina's bogus claims.
Jun 04th, 2016 - 10:27 am - Link - Report abuse 0@5. Can you stay long enough to read the whole of my comment? Considering what, presumably, comes off your fingers and, equally, what probably spews out of your mouth, I have to assume that you spend the major part of your time sat on a khazi. Always assuming that you have access to one.
Jun 04th, 2016 - 11:02 am - Link - Report abuse 0Perhaps you need a map. Notice that Britain, the United States and Russia all protested strongly about what argieland claimed. That means that the maritime limit WAS contested. Moreover, argieland didn't get what it wanted. The Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are STILL British. Together with the waters around them. You now have some lumps of seabed that we weren't interested in anyway. But remember that you now have additional responsibilities. Do you actually have any vessels that can get out that far? As far as I can see, you have nothing capable of enforcing your responsibilities apart from some Russian tugs.
Try to remember that you have no rights to impede the vessels of any other country. To use an analogy, think of the reactions to China's actions in the South China Sea. At this point, a number of countries, including ones from far away like Japan and the United States, are taking on naval and airborne patrols. How is China going to cope with 10 aggressive enemies all at once? Argieland probably doesn't have so much of a problem. Just Brazil, Chile, Uruguay and Britain to be concerned about. Ready to start another war, are you? Britain has already been training Brazil on amphibious landings. Chile won't need much. So Brazil approaches from the north, Chile from the south and Britain from the east. Good fun, eh? What have you got? Canoes and bathtubs?
Britain will do whatever it wants. Don't I recall a British submarine sinking an argie light cruiser? You have 16 combat-type vessels left. 10 of them aren't deployable. Along comes a British force. 6 destroyers, 12 frigates and 7 subs. Now tell us what we can't do!
Poor Argentina,

As I said back in March:
Jun 04th, 2016 - 11:23 am - Link - Report abuse 0Unfortunately for Ms Malcorra, disputed territories and areas south of 60 were excluded from the CLCS recommendations. So from your map you have to subtract those 200 n.mile EEZs around FI, SG and SS and all the claims south of 60.
In other words, this UN committee has extended Arg sovereignty beyond the 200 nm EEZ to the edge of the shelf, where not disputed with the UK. An understandable and uncontroversial decision.

Wow, talk about the biggest non-headline in history. Mercopress makes it sound like life was discovered on Mars, or intelligent life discovered in the island of Britain.
Jun 05th, 2016 - 07:57 am - Link - Report abuse 0What is the news story here? The fact remains the continental shelf territory was in fact, expanded. That the territories in so-called dispute (British territories), were no included is of no surprise to anyone. And the Brittos here are celebrating and flaying Argentina for what?
If anything, the losers are them. Britain has de facto control over those territories, militarily, economically, and culturally, yet their CLAIM (which preceded Argentina's), was dashed too.
Argentina being denied this portion of the request is no surprise, it has no control militarily over those areas, and the inhabitants are culturally British. That BRITAIN's request was denied is far more damming and humiliating.
As usual, tobias, you miss the entire point of the story.
Jun 05th, 2016 - 08:09 am - Link - Report abuse 0No one in the UK cares if Argentina increased its territory.
The facts here are that Argentina DELIBERATELY misled the Argentine population, and tried to mislead the world, over something that wasn't true. They LIED. But then again you would applaud them for that, wouldn't you?
So now Argentina has egg on its face, and the Argentine people are realising that this government is no more honest than the last.
It's the same type of attitude from successive Argentine governments where they tell the people that everything is brilliant and Argentina is an amazing success that is the envy of the world. The people become euphoric until the reality of the situation sinks in.
A bit like in 1982 when the Argentine government told the people that the 'brave' Argentine forces were sinking the British aircraft carriers and that the UK forces were dying by their thousands, and Argentine victory was but moments away...that was at least until 12 June 1982 when Argentine SURRENDERED.
No wonder Argentina has more psychiatrists than any other country on earth. It's hard on everyones self esteem to be told how lucky you are to live in such a 'successful' country, only to spend your life in poverty and being the laughing stock of the world.
Just like when YOUR beloved Cristina told everyone that Argentina's poverty level was lower than Germany's! Oh how the world laughed, and laughed and laughed at you all.
Poor Tobias, going nowhere and at a snails pace at that.

Britain and Falklands KNEW that before our claim was submitted - We knew it would not be granted! BUT - if you do not even file your claim then you can expect to loose by default!
Same reason Argentina filed its claim- intelligent Argentines knew they would not get those areas - but they applied so as not to be seen risking loosing anything in future by not registering.
Anyone with even 1/4 or a small brain knew what the result was going to be a few years ago! Status quo as the UN does NOT rule in Sovereignty Disputes - that is the job of the ICJ!

Jun 06th, 2016 - 10:40 pm - Link - Report abuse 0OF COURSE Argentine knew this. So much so that Argentina included the reference to the dispute EXPLICITLY in its presentation. Something the UK did NOT do in its presentation on the islands. The CLCS did not consider the scientific data as it ACKNOWLEDGED there is a sovereignty dispute, something the UK denies and did not include in its presentation. Hence, Argentina's goal has been achieved as the UN has ratified that there is a SOVEREIGNTY dispute, bilateral in nature and therefore neither Argentina's nor UK's presentations will be considered. Who lost? Tell Mr Willets as he seems not to be very aware of these facts...

Argentina say they don't allow the above, but the above is actually happening.
If Argentina's victory is asserting there is a recognised dispute, how does that actually help Argentina?
Why don't they use the fact they think there is a dispute and use it as evidence at the ICJ.
Answer: Argentina ignore the overwhelming evidence that supports the UK and the Falkland Islanders, as if it doesn't exist, so they or the UN asserting that there is a dispute is FEEBLE evidence compared with that which supports the UK (from 1765-1960s) and the Islanders from 1960s onwards.
Who lost? Doesn't appear to be the UK or Falkland Islanders.
Hence, Argentina's goal has been achieved
I thought that goal was to steal land off the Islanders?
It's still the FIG that run the islands, despite the Argentine's delusional belief that it is run from Tierra Del Fuego.
What happened to Radio Malvinas by the way? Still transmitting peace and love to the Islanders
