Brazilian Senate committee voted on Thursday to recommend the full upper house remove suspended president Dilma Rousseff from office in an impeachment trial, sending the nation's political drama into its end game. The decision -- passed by a vote of 14 to five -- is non-binding, but delivers Rousseff yet another setback on the eve of the Olympics opening ceremony in Rio de Janeiro. Read full article

Rousseff is accused of spending money without congressional approval and taking out un authorized loans from state banks to make the national budget look better than it really was as she campaigned for re-election in 2014.
Aug 05th, 2016 - 05:41 pm - Link - Report abuse 0She says such maneuvers were common practice under previous administrations, and calls the impeachment procedure a coup in disguise. Her allies point out that many of the lawmakers accusing her are implicated in corruption cases far more serious than mere accounting shenanigans.
Rousseff is accused of spending money without congressional approval ....
And she defends herself by claiming such maneuvers were common practice under previous administrations,.........So, she admits it. Therefore deserves to be kicked out.
There's far more than meets the eye in her apparently innocent admission ; while previous governments, even Lula's, resorted to this practise - of using additional money from the national treasury to cover holes in the budget - they all got Congress's prior authorization before doing so....Dilma did not, and the reason is simple, it would let the cat out of the bag regarding the true, disastrous situation of the economy just before the election.....and why were the Executive Orders un-numbered ? why did Dilma deny their existence and then recant after they were discovered? why did the two official banks refrain from declaring these forced loans in their balance sheets ? And further, the holes in the budgets of previous governments, were only a fraction of the deficit she tried to hide.
The fact that many of the Lawmakers who are accusing her, are themselves involved in corruption, is also true of her closest allies who are defending her in the Senate....such as Gleisi Hoffman (wife of Paulo Bernardo), and Lindberg Faria...so it's just a bunch of thieves doling out Justice to other thieves. But given time, and in the correct sphere, the chances are that most will be prosecuted.
