Argentine human rights leader arrest warrant for alleged involvement in public funds embezzlement

Hundreds of supporters prevented Argentine police on Thursday from executing an arrest warrant against the 87-year-old president of the human rights groups Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo in a highly politicized corruption case. Hebe de Bonafini had refused to submit to questioning about the alleged embezzlement of public funds meant for a low-income housing project, “Shared Dreams”, registered in her group’s name. “Spontaneous display of solidarity”, and how did they find out the police were going to arrest her? Only in South America could this happen. If you were going to be arrested in the UK, the first you would hear about it would be the police knocking on your door and reading you your rights.

Another huge fiasco for the Macri government, which is desperate to produce some new thing every week to divert the public opinion from an economy sinking amid rampant inflation, increasing unemployment, reduced buying power, small and medium size companies' closures, tarifazo and other “little things.”
There has never been a government in Argentina history performing so much damage in such a short time--even the Alianza took more time to sink the country into its 2001 default.
The Cambiemos team is cracking on all sides with loyales beginning to appear worried while CFK meets with people, grants interviews and defies Macri to jail her.
The last one was the best. Hebe, a strong woman if there ever was one, who walked in the Plaza de Mayo surrounded by machine guns when nobody dared to say a thing, taunted the police and forced the judges to backtrack with their silly detention order.
Argentina has found its own George W. Bush!

    Mr. Massott;

How does a cronie of 'Evita K' have access to government funds for subsidized housing, and then have some go unaccounted for?

It's been 40 years. How's the hunt for the kiddy winks going?

What do they have to protest to the government about at these rallies?

Why do they have a weekly rally against a new government for something that happened 40 years ago?

Aren't the child-stealing junta meanies the same heroes that are celebrated each year for invading the Falklands?

Are they even relevant anymore, or is it just an excuse for a government handout?

So many questions. We're waiting for more of your wisdom and inside information, Mr. Canuck.

    Nonsense!

Her original righteous cause has been superseded by a role of an activist for human rights and the poor.

And yet, her publicly funded projects have been mired in corruption, just as the K government was.
She hired known felons to administer $300m in funding and when irregularities were discovered, she used them as scapegoats.

The Judiciary wants to question her about that period when the K's government is implicated in corruption itself, and the Judges were routinely intimidated and influenced by the Executive branch of government.

She has resisted arrest by supporters with machine guns and defied Investigators.

Sounds like too much money is at stake.
What does she have to hide, that she has to operate outside the law?

“”The Association remained close to Kirchnerism. They established a newspaper (La Voz de las Madres), a radio station, and a university (Popular University of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo).[15]
The Association at one time managed a federally funded housing program, Sueños Compartidos (“Shared Dreams”), which it founded in 2008.[16]By 2011, Sueños Compartidos had completed 5,600 housing units earmarked for slum residents, and numerous other facilities in six provinces and the city of Buenos Aires.[17][18]

Its growing budgets, which totaled around US $300 million allocated between 2008 and 2011 (of which $190 million had been spent), came under scrutiny. There was controversy when the Chief Financial Officer of Sueños Compartidos, Sergio Schoklender, and his brother Pablo (the firm's attorney) were alleged to have embezzled funds.[18] The Schoklender brothers had been convicted in 1981 for the murder of their parents and served 15 years in prison. After gaining Bonafini's confidence, they were managing the project's finances with little oversight from the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo or the program's licensor, the Secretary of Public Works. Their friendship with the Association ended in June 2011 after Bonafini learned of irregularities in their handling of the group's finances.[19]Following an investigation ordered by Federal Judge Norberto Oyarbide, the Secretary of Public Works canceled the Sueños Compartidos contract in August 2011. The outstanding projects were transferred to the Undersecretary of Housing and Urban Development”

No longer relevant since at least 2011.

Evaded arrest for Contempt and defied investigators by mob support and running police road block.

Belabour the point all you like,

it doesn't detract from the fact that Boner is avoiding arrest and refuses to speak with investigators about her involvement in the disappearance of $m's of public funds that should have been destined for the poor.

She is just another K thief, hiding as an advocate for the poor.

Just like her pal Cristins, the self-appointed new “Evita”.

The building projects have been taken away from the Mutha's since 2011 - she is no longer relevant and it was a sham.

El Think is right. The judge that sent police forces arrest Hebe did not need to do so in order to get Hebe's word.

“Mrs Bonafini, who is 87, is not personally accused in the case.” (Source: BBC--is that a credible source or a Kirchnerist outlet?)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-36982976

The judge himself has now agreed to go and talk to Hebe in a more normal way.

Such spectacular procedures have been going on to try and humiliate those who supported and keep supporting Kirchnerism.

Usually Clarin and similar media cronies are told in advance so that they can be there when police arrives and offer video images of Kirchnerists being searched, handcuffed and paraded from police station to police station.

Meanwhile, Clarin et al avoid or minimize showings of increasing street protests for the high cost of living and horrendous increases in utility bills, aka Tarifazo.

Such tactics have worked for a while but their effectiveness is rapidly wearing off, as day to day living conditions erode.

The Macri government is beginning to worry many allies of Cambiemos, because its moves aren't working for many--not only for Kirchnerists. No previous government--not even the Alliance that led the country to its catastrophic default in 2001--has made so much damage in such a short time.

Of course, it's convenient to focus attention to the famous Lopez case and away from today's reality.
However, with each passing day, Argentines are realizing the impact that the measures taken by the new government is having on them--to their day-to-day lives.
That is why today they took to the streets--to tell Macri exactly that.
Even Clarin has now decided to say something about it--a 180-degree turnaround!

I know that you are fascists so there is no option to evaluate things rationally for you. Your attitude against any person that thinks differently are offensive expressions.

Any argentine, any citizen, person has the right to keep silence in front of a judge. This is completely different to refuse to attend an official appointment with the Judge (or his/her Secretaries).

Hebe de Bonafini, acting illegally, refuse to attend the official and mandatory appointment as it was her obligation as citizen.

@ 34 “Every single day, dozens of Argentinean citizens make use of their Constitutional right not to declare in all sorts of civill and criminal cases...”

Tink is blowing smoke and trying to hide the issue, as usual. And the issue is the matter of physical appearance to declare, the lawful requirement to satisfy a subpoena. The deliberate failure to appear to testify is considered a criminal act, essentially contempt of court. The matter of the content of a declaration, or the absence of any declaration at all once the subpoenaed person has effected a presence, is indeed another matter. But we should not confuse the two, as Tink attempts to do.

You should read the news more often--if you had done so, you would have found out that the “conflict” between Hebe de Bonafini and Judge Marcelo Martínez de Giorgi was quickly solved after some drama.

After unsuccessfully trying to arrest Hebe on Thursday, the judge found out that, in fact, he can, instead of detain her, just go ask what he wants this week, reportedly as early as today as reported by the Buenos Aires Herald. Hebe is willing to greet the judge.

    Problem solved!

As mentioned “the issue is the matter of physical appearance to declare, the lawful requirement to satisfy a subpoena. The deliberate failure to appear to testify is considered a criminal act, essentially contempt of court”

Not a single citizen of a democratic republic can refuse and reject his/her obligation to attend a subpoena. It is mandatory no matter the judge or the power a citizen has. Period.

German: You are now left alone still crying out loud for a strict application of the rule of law in Argentina--even the judge has shown flexibility. This is the situation without unnecessary embellishments:

A judge issued a totally unnecessary warrant in the context of judicial harassment to anything that smells Kirchnerism and he was given the finger by a lady with the biggest brass balls in the country.

Then, the judge suddenly “realized” that instead of detaining an 87-year-old lady who's going nowhere he could just as easily go ask her at her place. (Furthermore, Hebe is not an accused person in the file).

So what would have been a “crime” Thursday is no longer such on Monday.

    Funny world, eh German?

“A judge issued a totally unnecessary warrant in the context of judicial harassment”? This is a subject opinion but the facts are quite different.

She was properly informed that she had to attend the subpoena. She cannot avoid her duties as citizen. Attending the subpoena was his obligation. Nobody can legally refuse to do so. The rest is smoke over the water !!!

Both Tink and Reekie are pretending to fail to understand the significance of “crimes unquestionably committed” and “the decision of the justice system to postpone prosecution of those crimes.”

Bonafini is one of about 42 people being called to testify in this investigation. I'm not aware of any other witness who has failed to agree to the subpoena, who has elected to instead fall into contempt of court. But then, there are those many Peronists who believe themselves to be above the law.

On the same topic, I found this on a pro K rag, ie the BA Herald...

As you can see, Komrade Rique, your “Saint” shares the same predilection for mass murder as you! You can hardly complain if others wish the same destruction you wish on them. I understand you have been grinding that axe for decades now, but it's time you buried the hatchet...preferably in your head. First, it would be an undeniably humorous improvement to that skull like visage, and second, it would have the salutary effect of opening your mind, if only briefly. ;)

Wow, imoyaro found an op-ed that censures Hebe and Kirchnerist various.
Imoyaro then fantasizes about facts of violence, which he justifies by a violence, allegedly, exercised by others.
“You can hardly complain if others wish the same destruction you wish on them.”
Of course, “destruction” fantasies speak volumes more about your psyche than anything else.
Back to your meds, my poor lad.

“...it's time you buried the hatchet...preferably in your head.”

I submit the above does not provide much support for your argument. Additionally, wishing my sudden obliteration for holding different opinions does not say much about me, but it says a lot about you.

Oh, and I checked Dictionary.com for the definition of COMRADE. The third definition comes as “a member of the Communist Party or someone with strongly leftist views.”

Apparently you are attempting to use the term as an insult?

“Comrade: Derived from French 'camarade', which was in turn derived from Latin ”camara“, this term means one with whom feelings of camaraderie are shared. A friend, associate, or partner can be considered a comrade. This term was, in fact, used by socialists before the Soviets popularized it, and continues to be used today by socialists, communists, and even without political connotations. ”

To be a human rights leader doesn't exclude one from appearing in court.

Of course Hebe de Bonafini has realized, that her only option to stay out of jail is to stay away from court, as most of her supporters would realized her crooked nature, if she refused to testify in court about, among other subjects, the irregularities about her bank accounts in Caja Ahorro Asturia in Spain. [1] The account has received millions of dollars until 2008 and in October 2011 had a balance of 125,018 euros [2]

Neither Shrinkbrain “Think”, nor E. Massot live in Argentina, they draw their “information” from Kirchnerist sources, and haven't got a clue to real life in Argentina.

The two don't even seem to realize are exposing themselves as devoted Kirchnerist propagandists when they try to obfuscate Bonafini's refusal to appear in court with the right to not incriminate oneself.

The case, which the two “Einsteins” try to blame on president Macri as political persecution, dates back to at least 2011 (ie. the Kirchnerist era), when the Argentine federal prosecutor Jorge Di Lello asked judge Norberto Oyarbide to summoned for questioning Sergio Schoklender, his brother Pablo and Alejandra Bonafini, daughter of the president of mothers of Plaza de Mayo, Hebe de Bonafini. The prosecutor wanted to investigate crimes of fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy for diverting 8.9 million euros dedicated to the construction of social housing. [3]

    Say, estimado Don Alberto.
    1. Do you live in Argentina?
    2. Do you read something that is not Clarin?

The answer to 2. is given in link [3] and in the below

“El Juez fue a la sede de Madres, pero Hebe se negó a declarar
El magistrado Marcelo Martínez de Giorgi investiga el rol de esa asociación en la causa Sueños Compartidos.”
    http://www.losandes.com.ar/article/el-juez-fue-a-la-sede-de-madres-pero-hebe-se-nego-a-declarar

I rarely read Clarin, only if other papers refer to it.

The judge went to the headquarters of the Madres de Plaza de Mayo, but Hebe refused to testify
Judge Marcelo Martínez de Giorgi investigates the role of this association in the Shared Dreams case.

    - and as opposed to both you and Skrinkbrain, I have been living in Argentina for almost 10 years.

Thank you for your answer, Don Alberto.
I congratulate for not reading much Clarin. I do check it however to balance my sources.
Of course, living 10 years in a country allows you to speak about with relatively good basis.
Further, in today's world, it's baseless to say that a person living abroad with internet access and a network of relatives and friends cannot be decently informed about what's going on in a country.
As a result, I feel comfortable commenting on what happens in my home country--yes, from abroad.
And isn't funny that many who disagree with my postings--some have never set foot in Argentina--would try to invalidate my opinions with the argument “you don't live there, therefore can't possibly know a thing,” sort of comment.
I said this before and I will repeat it: Those who are so irked by my comments have the liberty of talking to MP and ask for changes to their comments policy, e.g. “those who do not live within the Argentine territory are barred from commenting here.”
Would be interesting to see if the islanders ask for dual citizenship in order to keep commenting.

It's not just living in Argentina - many expats don't have much knowledge of the country they live in - I have some 80 Argentine friends and acquaintances, who give me each their version of life, ranging from the poor, who can just make ends meet if they eat ñoquis a few times a month (I have shared a lunch for three which consisted of 1 kilo of potatoes, a small block of cheese and one egg), through the middle class people who have lost more and more of their purchasing power because of the completely irratic Kirchnerista “model” which consisted of printing money without increasing production, to two friends who are wealthy. Even my 11 or 12 poor friends realized that after Néstor's initial succes, the phony Fernandez “model” would lead to increased poverty.

You who live far away and only get your information from propaganda and automatically disbelieve sources, that oppose your prejudices, shall of course be allowed to write your ignorant boludeses, which sometimes make me laugh and sometimes despair.

Do come to Argentina and live here a year or two on a pesos-salary, then we can discuss how “great” life actually is for an Argentine family, living three, sometimes four, generations in a two- or three bedroom apartment.

It's easy to be an ideologue when you don't have to live under the conditions.

Evita K culminated 10 years of flawed governance, just 8 months ago.

If I recall, any Evita indices that were honestly reported on, were all in steep decline.

It takes time to come out of a nosedive, especially when the cupboard was cleaned out by the last pigs at the trough.

Any index and/data from This year forward will be near impossible to statistically compare to in any of the kirchner's year, be it my lucky Kirchner....the dead one or the living embalmed one, aka...Asslips Kirchner. Is was amazing hearing them claim that inflation was officially at 11% per annum. But, when you purchased a loaf of bread two weeks later from the first purchase, the price was far more expensive. She must have counted that many of her followers were too stupid to calculate the math of inflation from their grocery bills. The other idiots who would believe her are those not living in Argentina because they did not have to purchase groceries in Argentina.....or try to find hearing aid batteries, laptops if you needed them for business, tampons (something quique desperately needs), even tomatos at one point. The shelves were adequately stocked in the city Buenos Aires during Asslip's years, but outside.....forget about it!!! I guess when you live in Canada and did not have to live under kirchner and experience it first hand, it's easy to believe her propaganda.
