German Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats were beaten into third place by the anti-immigrant and anti-Islam Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in a north-eastern state election on Sunday, TV exit polls showed. Read full article
Not long ago I went back to the neighbourhood of my old residence in what was then West Germany, in the early 1970s before I came to Argentina. That Germany of today was nothing like the Germany of 1970. What had then been a tidy and industrious area now looks like a Turkish slum. Eine große, zum Himmel stinkende Sauerei.
@6 In the 1940s, when Argentina was cozying up to the Nazis and swastika flags were flying in Buenos Aires, our favourite view of that particular region of Germany would have been from about 13,000 feet.
@5 DemonTree,
There are many conspiracy theories that l've heard. Lol.
The one that l particularly like is that Extra-terrestrials( who are in contact with most world governments! lol) have said that they want us to be one race, with one religion & one language before they will accept us into their Star Federation. Lolz.
So we have to culturally enrich ourselves & breed with these………er people.
Can't see myself embracing that idea.!
Of course the whole hypothesis fails when you realise that no sane ET would even contemplate having anything to do with loser-states, like, er Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Congo, etc etc. Oh did l mention Argentina.
@8 Isolde
Well that makes no sense at all. To a real alien, human races and religions and even languages would all seem pretty much the same. They'd be more likely to laugh at us for making such a big deal out of them.
Also, I should think a Star Trek style ET would hold all humans responsible for the state of the world, including the endless wars and failing states. I can just imagine them wanting us the fix the mess we've made of it before letting us join their federation.
And by the way, who exactly are 'these...er people' that you have such an objection to breeding with?
@11 Isolde
It's up to you who you sleep with, obviously, but I'm glad not everyone agrees with you. I have at least one friend who wouldn't exist if they did.
@10 Jack Bauer
It's no good the German's 'waking up' now. The flow of migrants has already slowed to a trickle, so they can't reduce the numbers significantly, and since they've already invited them in, they are much better off trying to integrate them as best they can rather than sticking them in a ghetto and leaving them to fester.
@12 DT
Well, good luck in trying to integrate them.....how has that experiment been working over the last 20 years ?? By what one sees, they prefer to form their own stinking ghettos.....reminds them of home.
@13 Isolde
Now I'm curious how you even met any Muslims. There can't be many on the Falklands surely?
@14 Jack Bauer
Middling. Some have integrated some haven't. Some countries are doing better than others. And people don't live in the ghetto because they want to, it's because they can't afford to move out. What would you suggest doing with the migrants in Germany? And what about Muslims in Britain who were born and brought up here?
@15 DT
Obviously, full integration is the best solution. Non-Arab Muslim immigrants seem to integrate without too much difficulty, but while some might legitimately want to integrate, the 'Muslim-way-of-life' seems to be the biggest obstacle....most are loath to accept the laws of the country they adopt as home, trying to turn it into the same shithole they escaped from.....and no amount of 'persuasion' seems capable of changing that. What about when they try to impose sharia law in their communities, in flagrant disrespect of the laws of their 'new' home... to me, it's more a matter of option, than 'lack of option'. If all these immigrants really want is to flee the 'danger ' zones, which is perfectly understandable, why do they insist on moving to the European countries with the best social benefits ? Doesn't sound like a mere coincidence .
@16 Jack Bauer
why do they insist on moving to the European countries with the best social benefits
If you had to flee your home and country, and build a new life somewhere else, where would you want to go? A poor country with no opportunities or a rich one like Germany with high employment? I think it's perfectly understandable they want to go there. Of course, the countries in question aren't obliged to allow it.
For good integration, I think too many immigrants arriving at once makes it difficult. It allows them to form their own subculture, and not learn the language, local customs etc which are necessary for them to be accepted in wider society. So Germany is likely to have a problem anyway.
But if they are not accepted by society it makes everything much worse. Perhaps the original immigrants do not expect to ever really fit in, but their children do. If they find they are always treated as outsiders, they will act accordingly. I think the USA is better at integrating immigrants than European countries because the 'American' identity is something that anyone who moves there can adopt. There are public symbols of patriotism which can be used to show you are 'one of us'.
In any case, since Germany now has all these people, it had better do the best job it can at making them useful members of society. Turning against them now would be the very worst thing to do.
And if any of them try to enforce sharia law, they should be arrested for harassment or vigilantism.
@17 Isolde
Fair enough. I think all the Muslims I have met personally have been perfectly nice, normal people, but I still dislike Islam as a religion, and there clearly are some crazies out there.
And I wouldn't want to live somewhere so isolated (and cold) myself, but I guess it's different when it's your home.
@18 DT
......If you had to flee your home and country, and build a new life somewhere else, where would you want to go? A poor country with no opportunities or a rich one like Germany with high employment?
While it was true of the large flows of immigration in the 19th and early 20th centuries, today's (Muslim) immigrants, (obviously with exceptions), don't seem to be really looking for WORK opportunities, as much as 'somewhere' to rest their lazy skeletons. Not to mention the security problem inherent to mass Muslim immigration. If they are not outright threats, they form their own ghettos as if they were back in the 'old' country....adapting to their new home, the new culture, and getting ahead professionally, does not appear to be foremost in their minds. I doubt that even their children will adapt.....the terrorists in France and Belgium were all home-grown, just like the thousands that went to fight for ISIS and are now are being allowed back in....Must say, they seem to have adapted really well to the western way-of-life.
Muslims who emmigrated years ago, without all the current hatred for the West are, as you say, probably ok, but the current flow is bringing a lot of undesirable 'baggage' with it.
And if any of them try to enforce sharia law, they should be arrested for harassment or vigilantism.
Well, with all the bleeding-heart liberals ruling most of Western Europe, I don't see any government clamping down on attempts to enforce sharia Law....all one sees is idiotic politicians claiming that those concerned with it are exaggerating, and spreading the false belief that the problem will go away if they ignore it....or, like love 'em and they'll love you back. That is just seen as a sign of weakness, which they'll be sure to take advantage of.
Time will tell, but the writing is already on the wall.
