The U.K.’s decision to leave the European Union hands Spain its best chance in three centuries to reclaim sovereignty over Gibraltar, Acting Foreign Affairs Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo said.

The best formula would be for Spain and the U.K. to exercise joint sovereignty over the territory which would still be able to broadly administer its own affairs, Garcia-Margallo said in an interview Friday with broadcaster Antena 3.

The MOD has stated that the Royal Navy may well permanently station some ships at Gibraltar, one or two OPVs perhaps.

Gibraltar is tackling Brexit proactively as it has no desire to leave the UK. Contrast this with Scotland which at least has the opportunity to reenter the EU as an independent state if it wishes.

Spain has more to worry about than Gibraltar but it makes a good diversion when you look at the pictures from Catalonia's recent national day this week.

Catalonian independence would be devastating for Spain as it would totally negate any claim it has to Gibraltar. However Scottish independence would entrench Gibraltar as British as it would show that Britain is capable of letting different nations and people of the UK exercise self-determination.

No matter which way you look, Spain loses.

Now if only Spain could form a government.....

The majority of scots want to remain in the UK,
it is only rosy and Jim that refuses to accept this democratic vote,

today salmon states another referendum by 2018,
but in the scots papers, most seem to disagree with this and despair at another 4 years ,

the Scottish people seems to be losing patients with the SNP and its antics,

but as it was the Scottish people that elected them, then only the Scottish people can kick them out,

but the latest seems to be, that the scots want to remain,
and the SNP wants to go.
    so they say.

You read too many headlines Skip....
The Nats were beaten on the Indy vote and they are sore losers....
They would be beaten again in current circumstances so it's not going to happen...
So let's have less of these sweeping statements that Scotland wants to leave...
Scotland's majority wants to stay therefore Scotland wants to stay....Understand...?
There is no contrast between Gibraltar and Scotland....

Briton - Why would Spain even care ?

Any more than if Spain parked its own carrier off Gibraltar today ?

Does the average UK citizen raise an eyebrow when Russia flies some nuclear bombers into UK airspace after some diplomatic snub - theres a small newspaper column, next to the sports section. A care, an advert, a fart.

By all means, both sail the future carrier in, and also station opv's in the meantime - the only people really caring would be your sort.

Maybe theres an equally petty commander somewhere in Andalusia who will respond with a nice mechanized infantry parade followed by some prison buses, and riot police, in full view of Gib.
Maybe several hours of fly overs - go ahead, try stopping them.

Back in reality - I doubt the carriers will plan to stop in Gibraltar for practical reasons.

Well they probably will, on their way to the Royal Navy base in the middle east,

But I don't know what this has to do with petty commander somewhere in Andalusia ??

As for Spain, i to doubt she will be worried, then again she should grow up with her attitude towards something she will never get,
unless you know something the Gibraltarians don't know.

    Back in reality
Spain is Spain, and Gibraltar is Gibraltar, two totally different countries,
    to be fair

Maximum draft accommodation I could find was 9.6m

Bit short for the Elizabeth classes 11m draft. :)

Voice, pull your head out your arse!

“So let's have less of these sweeping statements that Scotland wants to leave...”

Where did I state or make a sweeping statement that Scotland want to leave?

    I didn't.

For someone who is so anally pedantic, you sometimes just come across as a bitter contrarian.

“There is no contrast between Gibraltar and Scotland....”
Exactly, thank you for proving my point. There is no contrast!

Both have the ability to leave the UK if they wish.
Both are ruled from London for some things but have devolved decisions making bodies also.
Both want to stay in the EU.
    Both have had sovereignty referenda.
    Both terrify the Spanish government.

    No contrast.

Personally I do not know the biggest deepest ship that has entered Gibraltar,
no doubt someone on here will know if it can enter the port,
but this would not stop it sitting out side,

After all the giant American carrier visited Portsmouth and had to sit outside as it was to big, but visit it did.

#12: Vestige actually got something right for once: the naval base in Gibraltar is not deep enough for the Queen Elizabeth, so actually berthing here is unlikely.

As you say, doesn't mean it can't visit and hang around in the harbour, but we will see. RN stop-offs on the way to other parts of the world are common here - only last week we had two Type-45s and a large RFA troop carrier.

As to the Scottish referendum - again, let's wait and see what Brexit actually means - no-one knows yet. But remember that one of the main 'anti-indeendence' arguments was that an independent Scotland would be forced out of the EU and haveto re-apply - that is now invalidated, so there is a fair argument for a re-run. Again, not sure if there would be a majority for it though, and personally I don't see it happening in the immediate future.

Nobody really cares. You'll do the fanfare thing, some local newspapers and probably some schoolkids from both sides will write their Friday essay on the topic. By all means a nice fascinating day out. I'd go along.

What Britons hoping for though, winning a pissing contest, is in-achievable in Andalusia.
At sea yes, but as an enclave attached to the Spanish mainland nope. Spain will always have a bigger one in the Gib region. Dont you forget it.

Thankfully most people on both sides realize this,...and don't care either way, which is why you won't hear any kind of snub, warning, or pettiness from any sitting British politician who understands consequence.

A full morning of complimentary overhead aerial and artillery displays to welcome the Elizabeth can always follow. Or just a day or two of lockdown.
