Dressed in black, Argentine women took to the streets to protest the brutal rape and murder of a 16-year-old girl, the latest incident of gender violence to shock the country. Others walked off the job as a sign of protest, in what was described as women's first national strike. Similar demonstrations took place in solidarity in many Latin American cities from Montevideo to Mexico City. Read full article

This was fully reported in El Pais, Uruguay and made for very grim reading indeed, far worse than reported here.

    Drug related as usual.

Terrible in the extreme, poor lass.

Do I hold the best mark for negative reviews for a comment now? I was going for the Olympic record.

As for this news, at least women have the right to protest here. See what happens if they try to pull the same one in Europe and North America. They would be pressured-hosed and rubber-bulleted all the way back to the kitchen counter.

Its about time these women were heard.

Many countries around the world...and South America is full of them...are misogynic in the extreme, and violence against women is almost considered the norm.

I hope that these demonstrations help wake up the people of Argentina and other South American countries to enormous amount of abuse that women are forced to put up with, whether it be sexual, physical or verbal.

And this one for Tobias (TTT, CapTroll or whatever 'name' you're going by now). Remember when you said that Argentina was 'perfect' without any of the problems that 'anglos' (whoever they are) have? Such as rape, child abuse etc..?

Well it seems that people like you are part of the problem in Argentina. Either to ignorant of what is going on around you, too stupid to realise it, or too arrogant to admit that these terrible crimes happen in every country in the world. But in some countries these crimes are the exception...it seems that in your beloved Argentina it has become the norm.

Perhaps instead of your self pitying whining you could do something for your country for a change...and demonstrate against those who would harm women and children like this. You could, Tobias, actually do something useful for once.

How about it? Or are you still hiding out in Europe because Argentina is too difficult and dangerous a place for you to live, even though you constantly spout it's a paradise?

Argentina is by far the least “macho” laden culture in the Americas, except for Canada maybe.

That is an undeniable fact, I want to see anyone try to argue there is more machismo in Argentina that in say, USA, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Central America, Jamaica, or Mexico hahahahaha.

Please who are you people kidding.

Any recent “jump” in the violent murders of women has all to do with drug abuse, since virtually all the cases show this to be a common theme. And since almost all the murders have the murder victim KNOWING the murderer it is obvious it is not just random.

Now I wonder where the posters here think the UK has any right to speak on this matter. Have you had no women abused in your country, not a single one, in the last 24 months or something? Anglos will be Anglos.

    mr Nostrils,

    “Knowing their murderers,”
That is called Domestic Violence, the women are murdered by their “loved ones” who feel it is acceptable to treat them that way.

If you are using similarly sized Canada as a comparison, in Canada, there is a death of a woman once every four days statistically ( a recent significant increase).
In Argentina, its one death every 36 hours, and that's only the ones that are investigated.

    Compare.

    Argentine tough guys.

    HE DOESN'T LOVE YOU.
    If he hits you.
    If he treats you badly.
    If he underestimates you.
If he doesn't let you manage the money of both.
If he doesn't let you see your family and friends.
If he makes you ridiculous scenes of jealousy, and he promesses you once and again that he will change, but finally he doesn't do it, and makes you live very bad moments. HE DOESN'T LOVE YOU. Don't let him cheats on you with his falses promesses. Let's stop femicides for ever.

Yes, Latin America has a huge problem with machism. Yes, Argentina does have it too.
Yes, president Macri partially built his election campaign on the insecurity--and insecurity has increased since he became president last December.
However, women--and some men too--have showed they do not intend to lay down and become easy preys, not only to men but to lenient police and judges.

Nice post. Argentine or not, this is something we all understand is not ok.

    Mr. Massot

Maybe this is something you might not want to politicize. Some might say it's a bit of a cheap shot.
