Remembrance Day in Uruguay on Friday 11 November

Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November to recall the end of hostilities of World War I on that date in 1918, “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month”

Friday November 11 is Remembrance Day (Poppy Day) and the event will be recalled in Uruguay with a brief service at the British Cemetery, November 11th, at 11:00 am, and a Remembrance Sunday Service will take place on Sunday 13 November at 10:30 am, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (Templo Inglés).

 Remembrance Day is held to remember and honour those who gave up their lives so that we can now enjoy so many of the freedoms we have. It is an opportunity to remind ourselves that we must not repeat such actions in our own time (although this is becoming an increasing challenge nowadays, especially with all the acts of terrorism worldwide). It recalls the poppy fields of French battlegrounds.

“Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth of Nations member states since the end of the First World War to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. Following a tradition inaugurated by King George V in 1919, the day is also marked by war remembrances in many non-Commonwealth countries. Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November in most countries to recall the end of hostilities of World War I on that date in 1918. Hostilities formally ended “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month”, in accordance with the armistice signed by representatives of Germany and the Entente between 5:12 and 5:20 that morning.”

And, “Remembrance Sunday is held in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth as a day “to commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts”. It is held on the second Sunday in November, the Sunday nearest to 11 November, Armistice Day, the anniversary of the end of hostilities in the First World War at 11 a.m. in 1918.”
