Argentine President Mauricio Macri spoke with US President-elect Donald Trump, who invited him to visit him in Washington next year. Argentina is a great country, and we will have the closest relationship between our countries in history, Trump reportedly said.
According to a Pink House release, the Argentine president also told Trump he expected to see him in Buenos Aires for the 2018 G20 summit, to which Trump replied that he would like to receive him in the White House before that year.
During the 15-minute talk, both recalled their historic personal relationship and agreed to work on a common agenda to develop bilateral relations. Argentina is a great country, and we will have the closest relationship between our countries in history, Trump was quoted as saying.
Observers speculate that Macri is now looking to re-establish the old bond of friendship he had with Trump in the 1980s, when they explored real estate business together in New York, which ultimately fell into the hands of the American magnate. Sources close to Macri's entourage recall that when he and Trump used to play golf together, there was one occasion when the American tycoon broke the clubs in anger after being beaten.
A rematch could be in the agenda. I'm not playing much golf these days, Macri said. But maybe he (Trump) isn't either so it would still be an even match,” he explained.
