But didn't the anti-terrorist police know that the same trick happened in Nice, France, in July THIS YEAR?

I always thought the Germans learnt from history, apparently not, even recent history.

There are hundreds of Christmas markets across Europe - how would it be possible to police them all with anti-terrorist police? At the height of the IRA mainland bombing campaign they still managed to set off bombs - even though they had done it before. It is more than dumb to to think that it is even slightly possible to police every situation.

I am here in NYC and there is extra security at the Christmas markets and outside Trump Tower and armed police in Times Square but I suspect if someone wanted to shoot, stab, bomb or mow down pedestrians, they would be able. The key is intelligence not brute force and at the moment the intelligence services are so stretched they cannot monitor all suspects.

I get the impression that Germany is a lot less prepared for dealing with terrorism than Britain. They have a history with intelligence agencies and spying on their own citizens that is uncomfortable to say the least, and they haven't really suffered much terrorism until recently.

But I guess they will be forced to step up surveillance and precautions now, as well as policing. Even so, it's impossible to stop every attack, as you say.

It's sad that this is happening there. Really, if Merkel was determined to take in refugees it would have been much better to get them directly from the camps. As well as being able to screen out terrorists, they could have made sure they got actual refugees, and it would have saved a lot of people from drowning in the Med while trying to cross to Greece. Not to mention avoiding pissing off all of Germany's neighbours.

    IT WAS A TRUCK!

    Not a private car.

Energy imparted into the target is calculated from 1/2MassxVelocity squared of the 'projectile'.

The truck if unloaded would weigh about 40 tonnes (44 tonnes in UK).

It is very easy to prevent a truck getting through to pedestrians by the use of specially shaped concrete forms. Trucks are very low to the ground (fuel economy) and the vast majority have solid beam front axles, VERY easy to destroy.

My trucks were also hardened with special door locks that allowed the driver to lock himself in without relying on the truck's pressed metal locks: safety of the driver and load being the object.

Also, not temporarily altering the shape of the road access (with blocks) allowed the truck to get up speed. German police carry sidearms and are trained in using them and given the fact that these simple, cheap, changes would have stopped the truck without the use of terrorist police the driver could have been shot to death instead of escaping.

I do love the simplistic statements made on here from people who have never experienced truck theft and think unarmed citizens are safe.

    @ ChrisR
Yes, bollards etc can be used to protect from this sort of attack, and are rather common now in the UK. For example they were installed in airports after the Glasgow attack.

But as I said Germany has not suffered much terrorism until recently, and seems to be rather reluctant to take the necessary precautions.

However, they can (and should) install anti-truck devices, and whatever precautions they like based on past attacks. It won't stop the terrorists coming up with new ideas that they haven't prepared for. That is why intelligence is so necessary.

Oh, and Elaine is right. It is impossible to protect all of the people all of the time. We all face risks at every moment of every day; we should take sensible precautions and accept the rest.

@ Yes, I have visited a few in Germany, Austria and the U.S. The ones here now have heavily armed police officers on the perimeters but, to be honest, they are just there for show. They couldn't stop a bomb - people are not being searched. There are a few officers but many entrances to the markets. Actually, they wouldn't stop a regular U.S. mass shooting before considerable harm had been done. If a rogue gunman was in the middle of the market shooting the officers couldn't open fire from the perimeter.

@DT I think they used up the NYC supply of concrete bollards outside Trump Tower. You can't even walk on the pavement outside without being questioned by police. I would imagine the owners of the Tiffany and Gucci stores are fuming.

Concrete barriers, bullet proof vests and bomb sniffing dogs are simply wrong headed.

Don't engage in the mass importation of crazies - leave them where they were born.

You'll still have problems but you won't be compounding them exponentially with refugee programs of dubious merit.

    Murkill is gone.

And unlike the Ole Bag's failed prognostication of a Trump election induced market implosion - which may break 20K any minute - this will actually happen.

I didn't grow up watching bomb attacks on the news because of the import of crazies. They were set off by white Christians, who got their funding from America.

Most of the Islamist terrorists in the UK were born right here. Their parents, who were 'imported', didn't let of bombs or stab people on trains. So what happened to them?

Anyway, I said what I think about Merkel's refugee policy above, but it's important to realise that not all or even most of the refugees are crazies. Letting people in with no checks was foolish because among other reasons it allowed some crazies to come in with the sane people.

Right now there are a few enemies in Germany. If they decide to blame all the migrants, then they will have a million enemies.

Oh, and if we let the Neo-Nazis win, there'll be nothing left worth fighting for. There's not a whole lot of difference between them and the Islamists.

Monkey, in case you have limited experience, I'll take this opportunity to recommend an assortment of armament for use in the personal defense of yourself from nasties or islamists or whatever other group you may fear:

    Start with a 9mm pistol.

It has relatively low recoil so it won't injure your delicate wrist, is concealable and the ammo is ubiquitous.

Next, an AK clone and either an AR or a Ruger mini because you'll need to be able to digest 7.62 X 39 and .223 dependent upon whose lines that you're behind.

For the house or the office - it's hard to beat a 12 gauge pump, just point and pull.

If your little world goes full apocalypse - it would be nice to have a .22 rifle so you could shoot the larger rats for your dinner or covertly cut down on your competition for resources.

If at some point you wish to abandon your liberal passivity - a .308.

You don't give up that much compared to a 30-06, you can still reach out/touch someone with authority and there's a lot of it present in the world's arsenals (better a bolt with 6 to 8xish optics than a 14 or fal or the like).

You be sure and keep an eye out for those pesky Caucasian followers of our Lord and Savior, OK?

All those weapons are illegal here, and also unobtainable. That is why the recent attacks in the UK, by both Islamists and Neo-Nazi's, have mostly used knives. And they haven't managed to kill as many people as the US ones, for that very reason.

Thankfully the IRA have mostly stopped their attacks, so I don't need to worry about them any more.

But I don't worry much anyway. I don't need to carry a gun to feel safe walking down the street, and I sleep just fine at night without having one under my pillow. I don't spend my days worrying that the government are out to get me.

What are you so afraid of, chronic? Fema death camps? Super predators? Muslim children with home-made clocks? The zombie apocalypse? In America the person most likely to shoot you is... you.

Some fear is rational and healthy, but when it gets out of hand it's very harmful for your mental health.

We don't use lbs in UK.

Max GVW in UK is 44 tonnes, tractor has to be 3 axle and that, plus any trailer type used, must have 'road friendly' suspension / tyres.

Tractor weight is just under 8 tonnes, trailer plus load is 36 tonnes, trombone skelly is 8 tonnes, container gross 28 tonnes (up to 45' in UK).

Fereign trucks generally overload their 38 / 40 tonne max and this can be verified by looking at any UK port with Customs / VOSA waiting to pull them over as they egress.

    @DT

    1. Simply not being a “state” does not make a national territory other than a national territory and a part of that country. If Hawaii in 1941 was not a part of the United States, why did that country consider persons born there to be US citizens? (viz., 8 U.S. Code § 1405). Are the Juan Fernández islands not a part of Chile simply because they are several hundred KM from the mainland? Does the Colombian island of San Andrés belong to Nicaragua simply because it's closer to that country? Are the Galápagos Islands not part of Ecuador because they are offshore? Does Aruba belong to someone other than the Dutch?

    2. The US considers the 2001 World Trade Center-related attacks to be “acts of war.” That is found not only in their military and foreign-service doctrine but also in their civil law. The latter case of interpretation was affirmed by their Supreme Court a few years ago. That some from other countries may offer opposing viewpoints doesn't alter the affirmed position of the Big Dogs.

    3. There were a number of Japanese attacks on the continental US during WWII. Their relative lack of success does not alter the fact of the attacks and their intent. Nor does the inability of forum participants to locate the details erase them from history.

    Your opinions may differ.

In 1941 anyone born in Britain or it's colonies was a British subject. It didn't make the colonies part of Britain and we don't usually say that Japan invaded and occupied British soil. Hawaii may have been considered part of the US even before it became a state, but none of your examples support that assumption.

The US can call anything it likes an act of war but that doesn't make it so. What country was it who attacked them? Do you consider the hijackers to be soldiers?

As for Japanese attacks on the US mainland, I already mentioned a German one, so I don't know what point you are trying to make.

After several days of rising tension in our relations with Argentina, that country's armed forces attacked the Falkland Islands yesterday and established military control of the islands. ”

DT: “The US can call anything it likes an act of war but that doesn't make it so.”

Actually, it does, within their system and their ability to project force. And they have shown that they will break things and hurt people in convincing others that “it is so.”

Of course, voicey still does not understand that the Japanese bombings of the continental US during WWII, while on a small scale, were considered to be acts of war. But there is so much that voicey does not understand.

If we are counting colonies as part of countries then the Philippines was invaded and occupied by Japan during WWII, and actual battles were fought there. Would you say the Philippines was 'US soil' at the time?

In any case, the attacks on the continental US were a very minor part of the war, and it's true that the vast majority of the fighting took place in other countries.

'And they have shown that they will break things and hurt people in convincing others that “it is so.”'

So you think that might makes right then?

Attacking the American fleet at Pearl Harbor was also considered an act of war...what is your point..?
Is your point that America likes to fight its wars on American soil or that America prefers to fight it's wars as far away from American soil as possible...
..because all the American Bases strategically located across the world from which the Americans have launched numerous attacks is starting to make you look stupid...

The point is - that the conical protrusion on the top of Tinkerbell's head is internally vacuous and that the space directly beneath it is occupied by feces and even so - TB is infinitely more skilled at rhetoric than is the simian, Monkey.

I have to assume ChrisR's short term memory is shot. I have often said on here is I have misunderstood or got something wrong. He can't remember. I have often criticised CFK and other women on here if it is called for. He can't remember. But unlike him I am not obsessed with gender.

And despite my explaining the meaning of feminism as being just two simple words 'equal opportunities', he still can't grasp the concept. I don't know what his background is with women but he has more issues than Reader's Digest. He is too old to change but the world has changed and he just doesn't fit in.

Cretina isn't a femanazi or a radical social justice warrior of any stripe.

She tries to embrace her long since departed femininity and always operates as a passive aggressive gender submissive.

Murkill and Cliton however should be fitted for matching orange pantsuits.

I daresay he'd have no trouble remembering if he actually wanted to.

I have met quite a few men who had a lot of trouble with the concept of feminism. And similarly, it seems they would have no problem understanding it IF they really wanted to.

“Missed your comment earlier......You said ElaineB would never admit any feminist is wrong, but she often says CFK is wrong.”

So you think TMBOA was a feminist? I don't think so and she would have had PL EB chucked out of The Dark Country by the La Campora thugs if she had seen some of the comments.

Feminists want a level playing field' or 'equal chances' but that is just a ploy to get MORE than men. Ask yourself why The Equality Commission published this little nugget pertaining to The Equality Act 2010:-

”The third type of harassment is when someone treats you unfairly because you refused to put up with sexual harassment.
•For example, a manager invites one of his female employees home after they have been out for a drink. She declines. A couple of weeks later she is turned down for a promotion. She believes this is because she turned down her boss's proposition.

It can also cover unfair treatment even if you had previously accepted sexual conduct.
•For example, the employee above did have a brief relationship with her boss. After it ended, she applied for a promotion but was turned down. She believes this is because the relationship with her manager had ended.

Harassment can never be justified. However, if an organisation or employer can show it did everything it could to prevent people who work for it from behaving like that, you will not be able to make a claim for harassment against it, although you could make a claim against the harasser.

I wonder what would have happened of it were a man?

PL EB is always claiming 'she stands up to men'. Is this a statement a sensible woman would say? I think you would have to suppress a belly laugh if she said this during a formal meeting because it's ludicrous in the extreme.

It is very difficult to take what pathological liars say at face value, that's the big problem that EB has and the way she is going it will only worsen.

    @Impotent ChrisR

“EB is always claiming 'she stands up to men'.” There is a lie right there. YOU are always saying that, not me. I said once that I stand up to prats like you who think they can bully women into agreeing with you. It might work with your wife but not me.

I don't lie here because there is no need to lie here. But you, Impotent ChrisR, has been caught out lying on this message board and everyone witnessed it.

I am assuming from your post that some woman has accused you of sexual harassment in the past and that is why you have such bitterness and hatred about women. And you never, ever miss an opportunity to insult a woman. Does it help? Or do you use pot to lessen the pain?

I've never seen pant suits in vogue anywhere in the CJS - it's just that pant suits are Murkill's and Cliton's standard costume.

Usually the facilities operator will be obliged by the state by statute or contract to purchase from prison industries.

Often they produce jeans and shirts - at other times it's orange jumpsuits.

I thought that with the celebrity status of each that they might let them continue to wear their stand pant suit type of arrangement.

You'll often see the crews trimming brush along the highways in America and often they'll be wearing the ubiquitous orange jumpsuit.

Now Tinkerbell if you actually ever make it to America be careful that you don't run afoul of the system because one size seems to be designed to fit all and if you're a little rascal you'll veritably drowned in that tent and if you're a tall beanpole bending over to pickup those sticks will be entertaining to watch.

Seems likely in the circumstances. What about Rousseff, do you think she's a feminist?

“Feminists want a level playing field' or 'equal chances' but that is just a ploy to get MORE than men.”

Since I am a feminist I know for a fact that that's not true. I don't want women to get more than men, I want a level playing field for everyone. Nor is that true of my friends. It's not like there's a society of feminists anyway, you're talking about a bunch of people who don't necessarily have anything else in common, how are they supposed to be plotting such a thing?

And I know those laws were written to apply equally to everyone, so it would be just as illegal if it were a man.

Also, I have never seem Elaine saying she stands up to men on here, so I have no idea where you got that from. In fact, I have seen no evidence for most of the things you accuse her of.

    Perhaps ChrisR just feels threatened.

Gloria Steinem and other very dramatic and vocal feminist activists may well have made things very uncomfortable for Chris.
