A study by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) estimates the direct annual cost of crime and violence in Latin America and the Caribbean at US$261 billion or 3.55% of GDP, roughly what the region invests on infrastructure and double the average cost for developed countries. It is also the equivalent income for 30% of the poorest population, underscoring the grave development impact violence has on the region. Read full article

    No surprises there. An estimated 1000 robberies per 100000 population in Argentina for 2015.

    'Argentina and Uruguay, on the other hand, have much lower incarceration costs and lower crime rates.'

    Don't tell me Marti Llazo the racist moron AGAIN caught praising and highlighting the part of the article that trashes Argentina (where in this case?), but ignoring and probably dismissing the part of the article that doesn't?

    Who should we trust... a proven Argentine hater (actually a hater of every nationality except his own... .BRITISH, since he has never said a bad thing about them, yet speaks trash about everyone else, surprise he is British! Nope), or this report?

    I vote for neither really. Any report that takes a region as Latin America and compares it to the UK or Germany should immediately be dismissed and thrown in the shredder. Latin America is what... 30 times bigger in area than either, and has 4 times the population, with different languages and races and massive geographical distances?

    Ridiculous. I should do a report on crime in the UK, and include all of Europe, Magreb, the Caucasus, the Urals, and Israel-Palestine... How much would that data be worth?

    Useless report.

    @ Pet Troll. Wrong again, pibe. Not British. Not even anglo. Could be ethnic chinese from Singapore but educated in Europe and Canada, for all you know. But keep dreaming and frothing.

    The Argentine data on its extraordinary year 2015 rate of about 1000 robberies per 100000 population, the highest in the continent, nay, the hemisphere, is included in that report.

    Of course, according to the Pet Troll, we can't compare crime rates because... some countries are bigger than others and speak other languages? Huh? Argie logic.

    Dunno why they think countries that spend more on prisons should have less violence, since the causation surely goes the other way; countries with more violence are forced to spend more on imprisoning people.

    @Trollboy
    Presumably you don't object to the parts of the report that compare different countries and provinces in the region to each other? Also comparing to the USA should be valid right, as it also has a large area and different races? Actually I have seen Americans claiming that it's not fair to compare the US crime rate to Western Europe, and it should be compared to Latin America instead. I'm sure it's just a coincidence that this is a much more flattering comparison for them. ;)

    Oh, and I found out why Miami has such a low crime rate. Studies have shown that immigrants to the USA and their children commit crimes at a much lower rate than the natives, irrespective of which country they come from.

    Also Marti has praised Singapore several times in the past, including saying that he is banned from going back there. But he doesn't write English like a Singaporean. How's his Spanish?

    Now I definitely know Marti Llazo is BRITISH, ANGLO. He never is known to refute any accusations thrown his way, but yet here he did. That psychologically speaking is proof the assertion he refuted MUST be true.

    Whatever number you are speaking of is an outright lie, so it's not even worth refuting your pathetic claim. If that were true, then surely EVERYONE would feel safer in Detroit, Chicago, San Salvador, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, Cali, Sao Paulo, Caracas, than in Buenos Aires or Cordoba...

    Why don't you provide us with proof that people have written online they feel safer in all those places compared to big cities in Argie? Show it....lol.

    As for Demon Tree, I could care less what the North Amoans want to measure or compare.

    I can compare acts of terrorism rates in Argentina vs the UEFA nations rate if I wanted to... and conclude the UK is an utter dump and hellhole because it's terrorism rate is off the scale compared to Argentina. Never mind that Israel, Palestine, Russia, etc would be skewing those numbers horribly against you... but heck, it is all UEFA right?

    Therefore the UK is a hellhole compared to Argentina when terrorism is measured so.

    Well, not that we would even need that, when you look at the last 40 years, the UK was a center of world terrorism! Sunday Bloody Sunday...

    According to the Pet Troll's logic, he has denied being Somalian therefore he is Somalian.

    Isn't there some fancy Latin term for this sort of reasoning? Other than non compos mentis.

    Thanks, notlurkinganymore.

    Now I see what Trollboy is complaining about; he doesn't want Argentina lumped in with those *other* Latin American countries that are 'utter dumps and hellholes'.

    Anyway, from the report Mexico has the lowest cost as percentage of GDP and Argentina is in 6th place, which seems a bit surprising as Mexico has a lot of drug gang problems.

    And he didn't want me to compare Argentina to the USA, but really it's not much worse; USA loses 2.75% of GDP to crime vs Argentina 2.97%. Also Mexico is losing significantly less than its northern neighbour at 1.92%. Central America is still the worst region overall though.

    @Marti
    You also denied being Chilean, so I guess you must be both. Or you really are from Argentina and just don't like it?

    Heh, Marti the Martian. But you didn't deny being Argentine or Singaporean. Maybe the troll really is onto something?

    The only thing the “Troll” aka Chopper, is on to is that he is going on vacation. As he claims to be from Mendoza, what this consists of is this. The Mendoza area is an area supposedly inhabited by Ucumars, the Argentine version of “Bigfoot.” Chopper will camp out for a week or two. While there he will go to hiking trails, take off his oversize shoes, and tramp around the trails. When touristas come along, he will shake the nearby brush and make grunting noises, causing the touristas to flee with interesting accounts of the “encounter.” All this is done with the collusion of his probation officers, not to mention the provincial Tourism Department. I do hope this clarifies the reality of the situation...
