In his first speech as United States secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Ben Carson likened slaves forced to come to America to immigrants seeking a better life. “That’s what America is about, a land of dreams and opportunity,” Carson told hundreds of federal employees Monday. I can see why MercoPress felt they had to censor it.

Perhaps Dr. Ben Carson thinks he and others just came to have a nice little break,

Before any of those, I predict a LOT of borrowing. $1tr infrastructure program + tax cuts = massive national debt increase. But don't worry, you can always default like Argentina - Trump has extensive experience of bankruptcy. :)

Carson is an interesting individual: a gifted and highly successful surgeon ( and failed politician ) with a history of saying some pretty nutty things - this latest contention being one of them. In that context getting outraged about this seems like a waste of energy.

And I wonder if he is aware of the irony that his name once belonged to a slave owner...

    Dumbasses.

    lol.

Poor Token was just using standard boilerplate race speech.

The difference is that he shuffles for the republicans instead of the democrats.

Obamy said virtually the same thing on almost a dozen occasions.

There's a 'standard boilerplate race speech'? What does that even mean? And 'shuffles'? Really Chronic, like his employer he has simply fallen victim to the irresistible urge to give voice to his brain farts, something he experiences frequently.

    @Heisenbergcontext
Agree it's a storm in a teacup, and it's not the nuttiest thing he's ever said either. But we need to remember he's trying to appeal to Republicans, who at least claim to believe in some pretty crazy stuff themselves.

And dunno why it's relevant that Obama compared immigrants to slaves. No one objects to that, it was the actual specifics that some people have a problem with.

Bill Clinton did it. (Special note to Chelsea on that one.)

    Reverend Jesse did it.

    Carol Mosely Braun did it.

    The Reverend Al did it.

    Standard boilerplate race speech.

    lol.

    MLK, Jr. popularized it.

    Even Lil' Marco co-opted it.

    Standard boilerplate race speech.

So it isn't the message - it's the messenger.

Poor ole Token, next they'll be uncle toming him.

Liberals can't rationalize a successful black man with conservative values.

“Liberals can't rationalize a successful black man with conservative values.”

No, that's perfectly understandable. It's harder to understand one supporting the current radical Republican party, but that's true of anyone really.

Chronic, if you would read what people are actually objecting to, you would understand that it is definitely the message, but I know you won't do that. The fact you think all talk about race is 'standard boilerplate', and call Dr Carson 'Token' shows us exactly where you stand on the issue.

    He is a token.

The comparison's a fixture in race speeches.

His isn't the most awkward expression of it - only the most harshly judged.

It's the messenger - not the message.
