Europe can no longer completely depend on the US and UK following the election of President Trump and Brexit, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said. Mrs. Merkel said she wanted friendly relations with both countries as well as Russia but Europe now had to fight for its own destiny. Read full article

Glad to hear that she could depend of the UK in the past, what has changed, Oh, of course we are not going to pay for all those MEPS, sad really just get over it. We are not leaving Europe we are leaving the common market as it was called when we joined.

Nice of her to admit that they had been depending (taking us for a ride) upon us for so long. Its about time that the Europeans started paying towards their defence. Funny how we had to save European destiny not just once, not just twice but three times in the last two hundred years, a French Dictator/emperor, a German Kaiser and German & Italian dictators.

May 29th, 2017 - 02:37 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Exactly what I was thinking. We are Europeans too, the EU is not Europe and it's not a state either (yet).
@Capt Rockhopper
They are creating an EU army to deal with their defence, does that make you happy?
To show that she means business, Merkel is sending troops to the Sudetenland.

Why don't you listen to what the Lady really said in that Bierzelt..., before hurrying to the bombshelters...?

May 29th, 2017 - 08:23 pm - Link - Report abuse +1What's the difference? The comments are interesting though.
Anyway, Trump is Trump, but the EU have a huge influence on how Brexit goes, they shouldn't write us off as allies yet.
@Marti
Lithuania, I think you'll find.
Mr.DemonTree...
May 29th, 2017 - 09:57 pm - Link - Report abuse -3Who Wrote you off as allies?
Did you listen to the video from the Bierzelt I linked to...???
Or does your reptile brain just like to react to false and incendiary titles like the above artcle's...:
《Merkel calls on Europe to ”fight for its own destiny”, forget US and UK》
It's on its own Atlantic plate, and incidently Europe is on our continental shelf, therefore as Argentina says that the FALKLANDS are on their continental shelf it must be true.

May 29th, 2017 - 10:41 pm - Link - Report abuse 0No, because my knowledge of German is about equal to introducing myself and saying please and thank you, but I did google translate the article. Apart from the 'incendiary' headline, the substance seems broadly accurate.
.... and precisely where did Google translate to you that she's writing you Engrish off as allies...?.
May 30th, 2017 - 02:12 am - Link - Report abuse -2Wait, mainland Europe ditching the UK, and the Asia-Pacific region ditching the USA?
May 30th, 2017 - 03:48 am - Link - Report abuse -2This after the Philipines, Turkey, and Thailand in recent times have told the USA to f-off? And how many countries have run over to profess alliance with the UK after Brexit? A grand total of 0.00.
Don't tell me, another prediction of mine once again correct! I said back in 2012 or 2013 that by 2016 the USA would be in deep 'sh-t. I was right. I also have said for years the UK was devolving into a 4th Reich, isolated from the world and internally with increased racialism. Right again.
I will now await for the adulation and exaltation that I deserve.
You will wait an awful long time. The UK will prosper again, no doubt

May 30th, 2017 - 11:16 am - Link - Report abuse 0That was my impression from comments like these:
Europe must take its fate into its own hands and The times when we could rely on others are a little over, I've seen in the last few days.
@AustrOllOpithecus
Although I don't think it will be of much practical use:

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh...
May 30th, 2017 - 01:59 pm - Link - Report abuse -2You got an Impression about some words against Engeland..., that were NEVER spelled by Ms. Merkel... huhhhh...?
What impression do you Think we Europeans should form about them many words ACTUALLY spelled by Ms. May against Europe...?
We Europeans? I thought you were supposed to be Argentine?
May 30th, 2017 - 02:26 pm - Link - Report abuse 0And yes, forming an impression is what happens when you read an article or talk to someone. Communication isn't like programming a computer. This is why lots of journalists have written articles about what her comments mean.
Since you evidently disagree with me, why don't you tell me what you think she meant in your own words instead of just complaining I'm wrong?
And IMO the impression you should get from May is that she is more interested in appealing to her domestic audience than doing her job and striking a sensible deal with the EU.
Mr. DemonTree...
May 30th, 2017 - 05:32 pm - Link - Report abuse -1In me own words..., I Think Ms. Merkel meant exactly what she said...
That's the way Ms. Merkel talks..., clear..., concise... and direct to the point...
Listen to what she said instead of drinking the Anglo Kool Aid about What they Think she meant...
PS...:
As many of my Argentinean compatriots..., I enjoy the privilege of multiple nationalties...
Two of them are European...
Alright for some people, collecting citizenships like stamps. But if you can be both European and Argentine, does that mean someone else can be both British and a Falkland Islander?
May 30th, 2017 - 07:47 pm - Link - Report abuse 0You are being as unhelpful as usual; I answered your question about May. Merkel is a politician, so she knows that people are going to over-analyse anything she says. She can still rely on Britain when it comes to NATO, so why are we getting dragged into it?
Me.DemonTree...
May 30th, 2017 - 09:10 pm - Link - Report abuse -2You ask...:
Does that mean someone else can be both British and a Falkland Islander?
I say...:
Yes... In the same way as I am Argentinean and Chubutean...
Or as you could be Engrish and Tyke or whatewer other shire you are from...
About Ms. Merkel... She DID NOT say what you are trying to debate..., lad...
What's wrong with you Anglos...?
You normally spend loads of time trying to convince the rest of the world that your leaders, be it Donald..., Boris..., et al..., didn't say what they said...
And now you try to convince us that ze Germans did say what they didn't say... :-0
This is good news. It opens a path for the US to leave NATO.
May 31st, 2017 - 03:01 am - Link - Report abuse -1So in the same way as I am both English and British? And Clyde15 is both Scottish and British? And Bermudans are both Bermudan and British? And Montserratians are both British and Montserratian? I'm not from a shire though.
May 31st, 2017 - 09:00 am - Link - Report abuse +1Donald and Boris aren't my leaders thankfully, and I'm sure I've never spent any time trying to convince the world they didn't say whatever they did say. Since both are constantly saying stupid and offensive things it would be pretty pointless.
And I still don't know exactly what Angela Merkel said, because as I mentioned, I don't speak German. I only know what was in the articles about it, so why not try telling me what they got wrong instead of just complaining at me for believing them?
Mr.DemonTree...

Jun 04th, 2017 - 09:46 am - Link - Report abuse 0You have the mistaken notion that NATO is primarily for the protection of Europe. It's number one function is for the protection of the USA. The USA would rather have ANY confrontation with Russia take place at arm's length than near US soil.
For example, the USN Polaris base on the Holy Loch made us a prime target for a Russian attack.
The US missile warning stations in east England also made us a prime target. It gave the UK about 4 minutes warning of a potential nuclear strike.....certainly an advantage to us !
The alliance is meant to be mutually beneficial to all members, and think of the commercial advantage to the US arms industry with an almost captive market in which to peddle their wares.
