On this date we are reminded that the Argentines were unable to hold the islands for more than a few weeks when faced with a competent but comparatively small and disadvantaged recovery force. That over 10,000 Argentines surrendered so quickly and so unconditionally speaks volumes about their real attachment and commitment to the islands. That Argentina had occupied the islands illegally and in defiance of the United Nations resolutions reminds us all of Argentina's true degree of respect for that world body.

On this date we are also reminded that Argentina would do well to recognise this date as the beginning of their own liberation, to free them from an incompetent and murderous dictatorship that made “Argentina” and “atrocity” somewhat synonymous.

@Hepatia, what do you base you statement upon? Or is that just another one of those Argentine lies/fantasies? England will return nothing, it does not have the Islands or indeed the Malvinas. The Falkland Islands belong to the Islanders and the only place called Malvinas is within Chilean territory last time I looked.

Can't be 'returned' because they have 'never belonged.'

After 35 years this dispute should be resolved. The UN should call on the parties to resolve this dispute at the Hague Int Court.
Every year when Argentina claims the UN feeds such hope by not issuing a communiqué on the right to self-determination. In fact, the only dispute is about the maritime zone of exclusion. There is a false hope stimulated by some politicians and journalists in Argentina that with the passage of time the United Kingdom will return the islands, for that reason the comments that one reads above, in addition that the UN indirectly feeds that longing
Personally I regret that we can not have a normal relationship, one day like today we should honor all together those who suffered and died in that stupid war. After 35 years, the only dialogue that should be about how to improve our economies and the preservation of natural resources

Happy Liberation Day Falkland Islanders. Today is a time for both sadness and joy. Sadness as you remember all those who lost their lives to liberate the Islands from a brutal Argentine dictatorship, and joy as you celebrate your freedom that they gave back to you.

Until the Argentine government stop using the Falklands as a distraction to the masses. Until they stop repeating and teaching the same old lies in their schools. Until they actually start to respect the human rights of the people of the Falklands, Argentina can never resolve this dispute.

As for the British there is no dispute. The Islands are British. They are British because the Islanders want it to be British. When the Islanders no longer want to be British, then the islands will stop being British.

Argentina won't go near the UN International Courts of Justice because the last thing that the Argentine government want is a ruling against them, and the ruling would go against them because nothing Argentina can say can go against International Law, namely that ALL people have the right to self-determination. Even their attempt to remove that right from the Falklands failed miserably.

Yes they would ignore that negative ruling (as they have so many others in the past), but with a ruling against them means that even the slimmest hope of gaining control over the Falklands would be gone forever.

Remember the Argentine government has convinced the majority of its people that the whole world supports Argentina. That lie would be hard to keep up if they have court rulings against them.

Hepatia you've been saying 25 years for the past 6 years. It never gets any less, why? Because you know that Argentina will never get its thieving mitts on the Falkland Islands, not in 25 years, not in 100 years, not ever.

@Hepatia -- “England” has never even claimed the Falkland Islands. Does Chubut claim them?
