Controversy has erupted in Argentina following the release in Facebook of clandestine pictures from the current exhumation works at the Darwin Cemetery in the Falklands with the purpose of identifying the remains of Argentine combatants in at least 95 graves with tombstone reading, “Argentine soldier, known only to God”. If its someone that lives locally kick them out of the islands, we don't need people here that sneek around sending/taking photos and sending overseas.............shame on who ever, these are war graves and should be respected as such. The person should be named and shamed, should be very easy to find out who tok them by the amount of folks that are allowed out there....

Seeing as it was someone from the islands who allegedly sent the pictures to Cantone, it is reasonable to assume that it was an Argentine interested in stirring up trouble. There are people who think that the process is being done to identify whether or not any war crimes were committed by the British. I find it hard to believe that any islander would be interested enough to take the time to get said pictures. The question is, who stands to gain from such a breach?

The INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS official position (and request) about the Darwin Cemetery pictures...:
-The photos from Darwin cemetery that have been appearing in some media in recent days were not taken or shared by the ICRC team, and were absolutely not authorized...
    - THE INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS CONDEMNS THEIR DISSEMINATION...
    - Out of respect for the families, WE CALL ON PEOPLE TO REFRAIN FROM SHARING THESE IMAGES...“

As I have written elsewhere- totally appalling and disrespectfull to the families of those men who fell in action in uniform.
Ultimatley the responsibility for the debacle must rest with the ICRC who are totally responsible for site security - or can arrange with others- eg Falklands or British Forces Police to maintain it for them if they could not.
Amazed ICRC did not impose from day 1 a total ban on visitors(we were told there would be) and a compulsory random search of employees each day as they arrive on site to ensure no cameras/mobiles etc.
Appreciate someone in ICRC management needs to take a series of photos as evidence for their confidential records - hope those are secure?

Ignore his fake indignation, the same pictures are all over the Argentine press already, eg.

I imagine that is the one the press agencies decided was acceptable to publish.

Given who published them, I imagine it was someone connected with Argentina who took the pictures. There can't be too many suspects surely?

I Think of the question- Who is the Turnip?
Our side not misusing anything, just expressing disgust at what has been allowed to happen by the ICRC who should and could have taken measures either themselves or got other security folks in to prevent it- but clearly did not bother to. It was also of course made very clear last year that graves would have to be fully opened -nothing new there.
ICRC have actually let BOTH sides down.

Always knew that the Argentine would find something to complain about, they are insinuating that the ICRC are not complying with agreed procedures for the exhumation. If the ICRC let anyone visit the site more fool them. The Argentine are simply feigning hurt and insult for effect and make a non story into a PR attack at the Islands and the UK.

Think-ICRC may be 150yrs - but they are the people who ballsed up big time here in allowing people to visit when nobody was supposed to(and failed to make sure they had no cameras)
and also failed to ensure non of their employees or subcontractors on site had a camera either. They are 100% to blame in this.

The whole thing is quite sad for me personally. I was ashore as part of the garrison in the late 80's and much effort was still being made to recover remains when I was there. I say remains because by the time I became involved there were no bodies as such being recovered. I'm not speculating here, I'm speaking from personal knowledge. Some of those graves were dug to take very little in the way of human remains and some of them, for that reason, are shallower than other, older, graves. I can only speak for myself but no matter how little was found efforts were made to identify as much about the individual as possible and respect was always given. It's a pity that the common humanity we felt at the time is now so clearly out of fashion among the next generation. If the actual details leak as these photos have then there are going to be some very upset families. I hope the lesson is learnt and the leaks end with these photos.

Looking at the picture I think there are least 2 graves visible. They were buried in the normal direction, they've just dug a big hole to get to more than one at once, and you can see crosses that have been moved out of the way in the background. The graves do seem kind of shallow though.

It's interesting to read your post and it sounds like you had a stake in the work at Darwin so it's understandable you have such strong feelings for the inevitably upset families. I take my hat off to you for your heartfelt comments.

However do you recall boasting on here several years ago about your son being stationed at MPC and running amuck like a full blooded chip off the old block “improving the Falklands' gene pool” I think we're your words? You didn't demonstrate too much empathy for the families of young girls/ women when you posted that thoughtless muck. When I challenged you on it you told me not to take things so seriously. Sorry for being a spoiled sport but my daughter was in her late teens at the time and I found your post to be appalling.

Trying to play it all down a bit methinks? Some of the photos just happen to be taken showing down into open graves clearly showing the white polythene bags holding th remains of dead soldiers - some of us civilised folks call that more than just a tad disrespectfull to those men and their families.
As for the 2 resident Argentines whose names appear in some Arg articles as well - the visitor needed a driver - he also had his entry perhaps made easier by the presence of the other one who had a permit to enter as he apparently is responsible for normal maintenances(but lost his driving licence some time ago-hence the 3rd person as driver).
But as I have always maintained- more fool the ICRC for allowing anyone at all other than their own vetted staff and contractors on site at all. Midwinter- no need for any routine maintenance and no need for visitors.

Think, you sound just like one would expect the spokesperson for the Arg Foreign Ministry will probably sound like as they try and sweep it all under the carpet as it was one of their own who did the deed, and tell the upset Arg families to shut it!
Can imagine the screaming from all over B.A. had it been a local from here instead!
By the way I was wrong in one- the caretaker apparently gave up that job a while back and was not out there.
35 yrs ago we missed the boat(literally) as then we could have just shipped them over in bodybags in a freezer container at the time your old Generals in charge refused to communicate with the British over what to do with your war dead. Trouble was being a humane lot we all agreed to give the poor buggers a decent burial here - and we have had to put up with the political flak and bullshit from Argentina and certain visiting Argentines ever since!

But no - it would indeed be inhumane and rightly bring us condemnation if we did so now - unless the families in question wanted it.
No witchunts over here - we are a pretty tolerant lot. There is an old expression- people cannot choose the land of their birth - but with some luck you can choose where you want to finally live and then die.
