An estimated twenty European Union countries are expected to submit bids to provide a new home for two agencies that will be relocated from the UK after Brexit. The European Banking Authority (EBA) and European Medicines Agency (EMA), based in Canary Wharf in London, employ just over 1,000 staff between them. Read full article

    Three quarters of the Medicine Authority staff don't want to leave the UK, probably same for the Banksters. All located at Canary Wharf.

    They'd better start looking for new jobs then, hadn't they? And perhaps so should staff at the hotels in the area. They're hardly going to be the worst casualty of Brexit though.

    The thing about all this that it is irreversible. Even if the UK wanted to return to the EU in the future, it will NEVER get the same special status and breaks it had now, and no agencies would relocate there. Nor would many banks, car companies, or others risk returning when you never know when the risk of pullout would again arise. Once bitten, twice shy.

    So the UK is better going it all alone now.

    When we leave the EU some jobs will be lost but even more jobs will be created as we move into more wideranging worldwide trading situation. The EU is a small but important part of the world economy. The rest of the world is more significant in terms of unfettered trade as we become more outward looking. The financial sector will undergo a massive expansion and Canary Wharf the City and the Old Street will be buzzing even more than it is now. The doomsters want Brexit to fail, it won't.

    Is that a fact or a supposition...?
    ...all we've witnessed is the financial exodus.

    It's pure wishful thinking. The EU common market is literally the biggest economy in the entire world. It's not the fastest growing, but the rest of the world is no more interested in unfettered trade than the EU is; they all want something in return for opening up their markets.

    By far the most likely outcome is a painful Brexit followed by continued slower growth in the future, leaving us poorer than we would have been. The only financial sectors undergoing massive expansion will be those in Hamburg and Paris.

    TV, you should consider that no one who lives in the UK wants Brexit to be a disaster, for obvious reasons. That's why we want the government and people to have a realistic idea of what to expect and what can be and needs to be achieved in the negotiations.

    ...and then, to a man, doomsters who want our negotiators to reveal their strategy implying they don't know what they are doing! Utterly stupid. No one can predict how things will end up when you are negotiating with 27 other nations lead by the king pin of Europe's premier tax haven who has a mission to ruin Britain and snatch business and jobs from us. Our negotiators need everyone's support not carping comment.

    Is this a surprise, or even news. It must be obvious to all that if we leave the EU then these agencies will wish to relocate.

    Why should we have to pick up THEIR bill. It's the EU's decision to move them not ours !

    @TV
    The EU have revealed their objectives and it's not causing them any problems. Do you really think having cabinet members publicly disagreeing with each other and constant leaks to the press is a good negotiating strategy?

    IMO May's plan has always been to tell the voters what they want to hear and then agree to whatever the EU says, making changes in name only. But May isn't really in charge, and all the people concerned are pulling in different directions. What our negotiators need is a united front in government and a public with realistic expectations.

    @Clyde15
    It was our decision to leave the EU, necessitating their relocation. That is what the EU will say. They can't legally force us to pay up (AFAIK), but they can make life very difficult if we don't.

    DT

    How ?

    Have we actually seen ANY financial exodus or is it contingency planning.

    I was following a BBC discussion program on the financial sector. German industrialists and financial spokesmen are really worried about the UK's departure. The German car industry would be set to loses many jobs and no great gain would be made in the financial sector. New York, Hong Kong and Singapore may take some of the trade. Frankfurt is a minnow in a big pool.

    @Clyde15
    Most would call it contingency planning. However, although it's possible we may get a trade deal for the car industry etc, I think losing the financial passporting is really inevitable. Hence why all the banks are setting up subsidiaries inside the EU. Beyond that we don't really know, I think jobs in the financial sector will move over slowly rather an abruptly, but no one can say how many it will be in the end.

    As for the German industrialists, if they are worried they should pressure the EU to give us a deal. But in general Brexit is bound to be bad for the EU as well as for the UK, it's not like they wanted us to leave.

    The question is why is this piece appearing in Mercopenguin, a British government propaganda organ supposedly devoted to America, South America and the “South Atlantic”?

    Don't worry, just pray for a miracle like flying gold bars or something similar.

    The people of the Medicine Authority who staff don't want to leave the UK, and the Banksters won't have to worry either - lots of available positions on the dole.
