The Brazilian government has revoked a controversial decree that would have opened up a vast reserve in the Amazon to commercial mining. The area, covering 46,000 sq km, straddles the northern states of Amapa and Para and is thought to be rich in gold, iron, manganese and other minerals. Read full article

Disclaimer & comment rulesGood news. Until the government is in a state to enforce environment and safety rules on the mining companies (rather than be bribed into ignoring them), they shouldn't even think of opening up new areas to mining.

Sep 27th, 2017 - 10:12 am - Link - Report abuse 0The miners are SUPPOSED to obtain permission and there is inspection & supervision by the environment-inspectors. But who is going to inspect the INSPECTORS? In short; who needs PERMISSION” to prospect for the eventual mining?
Exactly. Brazil has plenty of laws, but the enforcement is not exactly reliable. Therefore it's best to keep things as simple as possible so no one can hide that they are breaking the law. They still might get away with it, but it's not as easy.

A RELIABLE Enforcement is Non-Existant!
A much simpler way; is to:
1º: Legalize corruption [effective ways ARE already on anvil] and
2º: LEGALIZE Drug-Trafficking [will NEVER be approved nor will be acceptable to the Drug-Lords and also to the corrupt politicians who are linked to this Highly Lucrative Activity
Number 2 is really something the US needs to agree to. Legalise drugs, and legalise and regulate the supply of them. That would take a huge source of revenue away from the gangs, making it much easier for the governments to deal with them. How can they stop them when the gangs have better funding and equipment (weapons) than the police?

Sep 29th, 2017 - 11:02 pm - Link - Report abuse 0After spending more than 30 years and after spending [WASTING] trillions of USDs, not even ONE country can boast victory in the War on Drugs [with the exception of Hollywood Imaginations where the Drug-Lords get captured/punished!].
In real life; the carriers of negligible quantities are caught & imprisoned; BUT tonnes of drugs cross borders - ANY border! The USA, in fact, being the LARGEST importer in the world!
This is ONLY because the he Drug-Business Lobby, is the MOST powerful lobby in the whole world - the Drug-Lords & the authorities obviously are hand--in-glove! In case of MANY countries, the Political Leaders are on the payroll of the Drug-Lords. Equally obviously, they have much to lose if the drugs get legalized. Hence; they'll NEVER permit - they'll never even think of - the legalization of Drugs.
This is ONLY because the he “Drug-Business” Lobby, is the MOST powerful lobby in the whole world
Oct 02nd, 2017 - 10:40 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I don't think that's the only reason, and I hope it's not a common one. It is striking though, how many politicians in the UK have said they are in favour of decriminalising drugs before and/or after they were in power, but strangely, when they have the power to do something about it they never do.

EXACTLY! You Said it!
This is NOT strange. It's normal - perfectly NORMAL - in ANY country! THAT's exactly why the Drug-Business & Arms-Business are THRIVING [Non-Stop] all over the world.
The Drug-Business + the Arms-Business Lobbies are THE Most Powerful Lobbies. In their hands, even a REALLY Well-Intentioned [extremely rare - nearly impossible to find] Leader becomes a mere toy - a CLOWN. So; just imagine the miracles which are expected from a Totally Corrupt & Well-Organized Band of Political Thieves; which is taking the country for a ride!

Of Course!
For those in THIS business; it is Easy Money! The Big Multinational Banks drool over such investments from the Drug-Lords and help them to launder it; taking the Drug-Lords as well as governments for rides.
