The body recovered from a river bed in southern Argentina is that of a missing activist who disappeared two months ago during a police operation, his brother confirmed on Friday. Santiago Maldonado, a 28-year-old tattoo artist, was last seen being detained by paramilitary police as they moved to disperse a protest march by the Mapuche indigenous group in the Patagonia Chubut province, on August first. @Think

Excellent points about Santiago Maldonado's yet officially unexplained, untimely death.

Those who are old enough to have witnessed the genesis of the state terrorism in the Argentina of the 1970s know that the reaction of the Argentines at large will be closely monitored to see whether society will accept extra judicial executions as a method of silencing protests.

The Macri government has conducted public opinion polls to measure how much (or how little) the Santiago Maldonado case may influence the upcoming election.

If the election results show the government can get away with murder, more police brutality can be expected to quell social protest in the near future.

    Dear Mr. Massot, and others

Frankly comparing the Dictatorship that ruled Argentina in the 197'0's with the current government shows a total lack of knowledge of what happened then and what the current situation is with the Macri government. In the 1970' over 30.000 persons went “missing”, there were ilegal detentions, etc.which anybody who lived in Argentina at the time and subequently kept abreast of the fiindings of the Committee set up to investigate theses issues will recall. I cannot agree that this the situation with the current government, nor for that matter it's predecessor.

Personally I strongly believe and sustain that the judicial system is improving - albeit slightly and slowly - and that the truth of what actually happened will come to light at some point. In the meantime we should respect the family of the deceased, allow them to get over this dreadful incident to grieve the loss of a dear-one in peace, quietness and total respect from us all.. And above all avoiding that this whole unfortunate matter become “politized” by any political party, whatever their leanings may be.Let the electorate decide what they consider best for the country and go forward from there.

Maybe you can give us a better idea of what it is like then?

If they found his body upstream of the protest site (is that true?) then we can assume he didn't drown while the others were crossing the river. But could the body have been in the river for a while? The newspapers said it's shallow, but full of roots and stuff, is that correct? And how isolated is this place?

At the bottom of the article you will find a frame with 11 pictures... They will give you a general idea...
    - In one of them..., you will see a ramshackle shed close to the river..They found the body floating on the surface..., some 100 yards upstream that shed... (to the pictures right)...

Video number two in the article shows aerial takes of the first search (out of a total of four) made on the 14/8/17...

Judge for yourself if three searches of this kind..., including some 300 men..., inflatable rafts..., divers..., dogs..., drones..., manned helicopters and God knows what else..., on such a rivulet..., that at that time of year ain't deeper than a little pony..., can miss a human body...

What a weird looking landscape. Is the picture with the shed the place where some of the protesters crossed the river to escape from the police?

Since I've read a lot of crime novels, I know that dead bodies are supposed to sink, and then float back to the surface after some amount of time. But if they already searched the river and missed it, well, they must've done a really shitty job. How has the weather been upstream from there, had much rain lately?

And why did the police go to search for him dressed up in riot gear? Why did that woman have a t-shirt tied around her head to hide her face? It looks like the place they found him was the area the Mapuche were occupying, and not near a road, which makes me wonder how easy it would be to dump a body without anyone noticing.

I suppose the autopsy should tell us how long he was in the river, and if there is evidence of drowning. They already said there was no sign of violence, although I don't know how they can tell if he's been dead since August.

You have no idea what the depth was when he died, and since it's glacial runoff, the water is cold, which would help preserve the body

The very first stories about it mentioned that he could not swim.

    @Think
Do you think I'm familiar with horses? I've never ridden one in my life.

But 4'8” is plenty deep enough for someone who can't swim. Can you see the bottom? At that depth I doubt it, especially under the trees. It should have been relatively easy to search though. Question is, did they bother searching the river upstream of where the other people crossed? It's still unexplained how his body got there.

Some information has come out about the autopsy, but perhaps we should wait for the official report.

I would like to know why the police went to search for him wearing riot gear though.

Hmm, there's one picture where I can clearly see the bottom, most of the others are too far away or just show reflections from the trees. It doesn't really tell me what it looks like from the river bank though. There's a lot of trees all along the river and they must make it hard to see anything.

And I watched the video again, but I couldn't see the same shed that's visible in the slideshow. If they only searched from the bank I would not be surprised if they missed the body, but if they were in the river I'd have thought it would be harder to miss.

I have read all the Sherlock Holmes stories; he always insisted on visiting the scene and searching for clues himself. Of course, there were no forensics in those days, so it made sense in the story.

If the autopsy confirms that he drowned, will you believe it?

The Argentine forensics people have reminded the uninitiated that it is common for a drowned person to initially sink for some period of time, and to later surface due to the effects of internal gases produced during decomposition. Given the low temperature of the river, the decomposition can be expected to be rather slow.

The Mapuche witness who now has revised his testimony and claims to have been with Santiasco when he was last seen, and who lost sight of him as both attempted their river crossings, has provided no suggestion that either of them was injured by the police, and is evidently the same Mapuche witness who knew exactly where to find the body in order to make the call to get his 2 million in reward.

The earlier reports that the location of the body was previously searched have been amended in the media, and apparently the authorities have now indicated that the original searches didn't cover that location.

If tinkle had actually once seen that section of the Chubut river he *might* remember that much of the shoreline is choked with vegetation.

So a city hooligan from Bs As province with no knowledge of the patagonian environment and who couldn't swim, without enough body mass to protect against hypothermia in a quite cold river, after participating in criminal activity with a gaggle of mendacious Mapuches, manages to drown.....

It clearly is true that you don't answer questions, as you still haven't answered mine about why anyone would want to move the body.

Is there a similar picture from the first search, from on the river rather than above it? Because what one sees in an aerial view is often different to being on the water. And even if most of the river is clear, that doesn't mean there aren't murky places under all that vegetation.

And also... I asked if it had rained lately, but obviously that was the wrong question. The snow is melting and the flow in the river has drastically increased, perfect for freeing a body that might have been caught on something under the water.
