Norway's newly appointed health minister has caused controversy by saying people should be allowed to eat, smoke and drink as much as they want. Sylvi Listhaug also said smokers were made to feel like pariahs. Read full article

a bill that would have given the state the right to strip individuals of Norwegian citizenship if they were suspected of terrorism or of joining foreign militant groups.
Besides the question of whether it's right to strip citizenship or not, they want to punish people just on suspicion of committing a crime? Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty?
In Norway a pack of fags costs ~11€
Let's say that the tax on it is ~10€ per pack...
Let's say a Norseman smokes a pack every day during 40 years before cancer ..., that gives...:
10 €uro x 365 days x 40 years = 146,000€
Now... the average cost for hospitalization and treatment of lung cancer in Norge is ~ 4,000€ dayly...
What do we do with our smoking Norse friend after 36,5 days of treatment.., huhhhhhh?
I don't know where you got that number from, but not every smoker develops cancer and if it's caught early they might not even need inpatient treatment. According to this, the tobacco tax take in the UK far exceeds the amount spent by the NHS treating smokers, but adding in lost productivity means the cost to the country is probably higher.

With such easily manipulated youth..., there is no wonder that turnips like Sylvi Listhaug get elected and that our planet is in the deep deep shiat it is...
And your back of the envelope calculation, missing out most of the factors, was good enough for you.
In any case, I wrote AS LONG AS they tax tobacco enough, I didn't claim they're currently doing so. If you think the government should be discouraging smoking as much as possible or banning it, even if it's good for the treasury, that's a different argument. DO you think so?
PS. I never voted for your turnip, or anyone like her. That was your fellow Norwegians...
My back of the envelope calculation based on years of experience is quite more accurate than your Unchecked Independent Chartiry that claims that a full treatment of cancer in the Uk costs the NHS meager 20,000£....
Do they ship Engrish patients to Antananarivo or Bujumbura with Ryanair for cheap witchcraft doctor treatment nowadays...?
Get real lad...
Check the facts they feed you...
Costs in the year of the diagnosis reach £12 083 per patient age 18–64 and £9061 per patient age 65+ in lung cancer patients. Costs reduce in the years following the diagnosis but remain substantially higher than their pre-diagnosis level.
That's cost per patient per year, not per day. And since unfortunately many lung cancer patients don't survive the year, that makes the £20000 figure seem pretty plausible.
The figures I quoted are specifically for lung cancer, and the fact most are ambulant is exactly the point. After 36.5 days of treatment your hypothetical person is being paid for by the taxes of other smokers who were more (or less) fortunate.
Don't imagine you're the only one with experience. My partner is being treated for cancer right now, and so far he's spent one (1) night in hospital.

Norway surely spends proportionally more on treatment, but it can't be that different.
Anyway, supposing taxes did cover the cost, do you think it's the government's job to stop people doing risky/harmful things? I'm unsure.
Wooooooooooow......
