A delegation of five members of the United States Congress is in Gibraltar for a two day visit. This follows the trip to Washington by Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Joseph Garcia earlier this year. The visit has been organized through the United Kingdom under the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act (MECEA) scheme.

The delegation were received at the airport by Dr Garcia and then hosted to a welcome dinner by the Minister for Education Professor John Cortes.

The Congressmen were briefed on the latest political developments, including Brexit, by the Deputy Chief Minister Dr Garcia.

They will also meet Governor Lt General Edward Davis and the Commander British Forces Commodore Tim Henry. They will be shown around the Gibraltar Parliament by the Speaker, Adolfo Canepa.

The Congressmen have had the opportunity to exchange views with representatives of the American Chamber of Commerce AMCHAM.

A visit to a new educational facility and to places of historical interest like the tunnels used by General Eisenhower during World War II will form part of the schedule.

Deputy Chief Minister Dr Garcia said: “I am delighted that we have been able to organize this visit in close cooperation with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the UK Embassy in Washington. I am very grateful to them and to my staff who have made this possible. I have no doubt that seeing Gibraltar for themselves will prove to be an invaluable experience and provide a better understanding of the situation”
