Former president Lula da Silva says he fears a “genocide” in Brazil because of fierce opposition to coronavirus containment measures by current President Jair Bolsonaro, whom he said should be impeached. Lula is a former union leader who fought Brazil's military dictatorship (1964-1985), then became one of the country's most popular presidents with an anti-poverty crusade.

The 74-year-old was jailed after his term on corruption charges that he says were trumped up to keep him from running for president again.

He accused Bolsonaro of steering Brazil toward “chaos” with his calls to reopen the economy despite the country emerging as one of those hardest hit by the new coronavirus worldwide, with nearly 14,000 deaths so far.

“The administration is turning anyone who's worried about coronavirus into an enemy, and that's not the right path. I'm Catholic, so I've been praying for the Brazilian people to escape this genocide Bolsonaro is causing”, Lula said who accused Bolsonaro has of attacking democratic institutions and the Brazilian people.

Because he has attacked democracy, and the Brazilian people, “I'm convinced the president should be impeached, and our Workers party will be supportive of such an initiative”

Asked about the number of top military officers in government, Lula said that the army has a lot to contribute to peace and order in Brazil, but they can't take sides.

“Their party is Brazil. These days, there are less civilians than military officers in the presidential palace. They have even more influence in the government than they did during the military regime.”

Moro “Hid Lava Jato’s collusion with the USA”
“Two days before he left the government, Moro’s Ministry refused to hand over information on cooperation with North American authorities on Lava Jato, which we have proved was illegal. The Brazilian state should exhibit transparency on this subject, without undue intervention,” wrote Zanin on Twitter.
According Folha de São Paulo reporter Wálter Nunes, Lula’s defense team has been trying to access these documents since March 16. The defense team cites a 2017 speech by US DOJ Deputy Attorney General Kenneth Blanco in which he talks about their relationship with the Lava Jato task force in Curitiba.
According to Blanco, the US DOJ helped “in the collection of evidence and in the construction of the case”, which resulted in former President Lula’s political imprisonment. Zanin views this collaboration as illegal and claims that it is the defense team’s right to have access to all documents related to it. “We have already proven that there was cooperation between US authorities and the Lava Jato task force in the case against former President Lula, which was not documented in the trial and is therefore illegal. What we are now trying to find out is exactly what this cooperation was and the names of everyone who participated in this illegal act”, he said.
