Chile passed the 50,000 mark for coronavirus-related cases on Wednesday, according to US-based Johns Hopkins University. The university’s running tally counted a total of 53,617 infections with 544 fatalities and 22,504 recoveries.
Chile has the third highest tally of virus cases in Latin America, after Brazil and Peru.
As the curve for the COVID-19 pandemic flattens or falls in many parts of the world, the virus continues to surge across the South American region.
The virus registered a rapid advance in recent days after it spread from more affluent areas of the country to crowded, poorer areas.
The world's largest copper producer has seen an increase of 10,000 cases in the last four days.
