Piñera's harsh repression of popular demonstrations compares only with his manifest inability to manage the coronavirus pandemic.

As many as 222 deaths on Friday? More than 6,700 new infections in the previous 24 hours, with 1,391 patients on ventilators and 373 in critical condition?

Meanwhile, the Chilean Society of Epidemiology denounced the Piñera government is sending false information to the OMS.

An opinion poll conducted by consultant firm Activa Research reveals that health minister Mañalich has reached 59,9 per cent disapproval and only 12.9 per cent approval.

Piñera should not be alarmed, though. Chilean citizen and Pinochet apologist will support him to the bitter end.

“I don't have any doubts that Chile's Harvard educated self-made billionaire President will wisely lead my country through this difficult crisis,” Chicureo posted recently. “Chile has an outstanding world credit rating and a strong independent central bank.”

The current deadly pandemic is sad and we are taking prudent cautions.

We Chilenos are accostomed to earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic erruptions, droughts, revolutions and dealing with Marxists like Enrique.

My entire extended family plan to enjoy skiing at Valle Nevado on July 3rd. (Previously we vacationed at Las Leñas, but Argentina has decided to keep their resorts closed.)

    Life is good!

Unlike our neighbors across the Andes, we are encouraged to export and we enjoy a stable currency without unreasonable monitary restrictions.

(Curiously Enrique remains mute about Venezuela.)

Thought you said Chile was past the peak, Chicureo?

You wouldn’t usually expect figures to start spiking upwards like this after four weeks of strict lockdown!

Unless you have an epidemic sweeping through care homes or similar, as happened here, deaths in hospital were going down but going up in other settings.

You need the breakdown of where the deaths are occurring to see what is going on. Data kills discussion.

Either that or the lockdown isn’t being observed.

“There are lies, damn lies and statistics.”

You're correct that this evil virus has taken a vicious toll upon our elderly.

The current problem in Chile unfortunately is a mix of politics and incomplete data combined with insufficient testing equipment. (Knowing my neighbors on the other side of the Andes — their situation is similar or worse.) Piñera just replaced the current minister of health with the highly respected Dr. Enrique Paris — predictably, the opposition is outraged anyway.

Using logic take a look at the current statistics: Chile has an approximate 19 million inhabitants: 167K confirmed cases (approximately half have recovered), 3,101 deaths of which 231 are reported. Double the number and then do the math yourself.

As I've said, our family band of gypsies will be together celebrating the opening day of Valle Nevado on July 3. My youngest daughter is employed working with the resort in compliance for all the newly changing restrictions. Food services will all be prepackaged and the bathroom facilities are complicated, but they are still planing 2020 operations open.

    Stay well!

Buen provecho Compadre, observe the “social distancing” and take precautions such as hand washing is what you need to do.

However I expect you know all that.

Virus or not we still have lives to lead, every time you step outside the door involves some or other risk, as we say “you could be run over by a bus”.

Yes, the washing of hands and leaning to overcome the habit of touching your face has become routine. I'm staying at home here — as Santiago outbound traffic (with permits) are being seriously restricted.

All our employees, including the seasonal pruning crew have been assured of their income, but we have just an employee to maintain health compliances.

We isolated ourselves at Chicureo for the first month of shutdown, which was highly rewarding in a number of unexpected positive ways — but now my partner has come to the conclusion that family separation is a worse consequence for everyone.

When we gather for our upcoming extended family vacation, we'll have our own kitchen. High altitude UV intensity and avoiding public facilities gives a margin of safety.

Regarding mortality: What I'm frightened of is the sharp knives my temperamental partner keeps handily.

    You too stay well

As I recall, it’s the 9mm or .38 Special you need to worry about, you don’t want to take a knife to a gun fight.

She would kill me in a minute if she could figure an alternative income stream. All joking aside, the 9mm user is a home assault victim. My daughter has friends with the Carabineros in Panquehue that recommended their standard issue.

I do agree with with your earlier logic, however the sound of racking a 12 gauge is chilling...
