Former Argentine president Carlos Menem died at the age of 90 on Sunday in a clinic in Buenos Aires, where he was admitted in December with a urinary tract infection. The president ruled Argentina during a time of short-lived economic stability and he enjoyed an often flamboyant lifestyle. Read full article

Disclaimer & comment rulesSay what you want to say about the truly flamboyant Carlos Menem, but the man was one of the most incredibly charming and personable individuals I have ever met.
Feb 15th, 2021 - 01:17 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I had two wonderful brief encounters with him — the first at an opening gala of a new farming project and far later here with his Chilean wife Cecilia during his exile.
He fostered a renewed relationship with my country and relations between our two estranged naval commands were encouraged to engage in cordial interchanges — after a long period of acrimony.
He was certainly a devious, manipulative, highly corrupt and immoral politician — but you could not help but truly like the character with affection.
He may be in the underworld with Hades right now — but I imagine he’s having a great time and the life of the party.

Feb 15th, 2021 - 01:39 pm - Link - Report abuse 0He was indeed a devious, manipulative, highly corrupt and immoral politician — and one did certainly & easily fall for that psychopath...
Until one saw what he was doing...
He wont be missed by many...
BTW...
On another thread you said about Shile..:
*** Just over 22k COVID related deaths of about 19 million...***
I say about Shina...:
Just over 5k COVID related deaths of about 1.440 million...
And your point was...?

Feb 15th, 2021 - 03:20 pm - Link - Report abuse 0China remains a mystery but I find it amazing you even mention official reported mortality statistics. Say what you wish — but they have perfected a Chinese Communist empire that has used its manipulative tentacles to grasp control over a vast number of countries, sports associations, banks, entertainment, communication, commodities, trade and the WHO. (They even own a large part of the national debts of a number of countries — including the USA although they’ve been apparently modest with Argentina.)
But that’s all off the subject. China is not telling the truth!
What is the truth is that I will always admire Carlos — even though he was a scoundrel.
Previous to his Presidency — I remember well the crazy 5000% hyperinflation and traveling to your country with empty suitcases...
As I said — say what you want to say — but the man was one of the most incredibly charming and personable individuals I have ever met.
BTW Do you know what happened to is 3rd son? I can’t find any references.

OMG... The return of Qhicuréo...
Feb 15th, 2021 - 04:25 pm - Link - Report abuse 0You present a ridiculous Q argument against the Chinks and expect......... what...?
Who cares..., Qhicuréo..., that it is just impossible..., in the lord's year of 2021..., to hide such a little thing as a pandemic...
What's next..., Qhicuréo...? The return of Your Savior Trump and his inauguration on March 4th 2021... as the 47th...???

Perhaps last evening was not pleasant — or perhaps you’re just miffed about my admiration of YOUR ex-President.
Perhaps it’s you just had a disagreeable lunch. (Mine was delicious slider-hamburgers with my grandchildren who are amazing proficient in German.)
All I was asking for was the status of his illegitimate son — whom Carlos recognized as his own. (It’s still a mystery how the oldest died in his helicopter.)
I’m no fan of Cecilia, but I assume their son is living well and is qualified eventually even to run for the presidency of your great nation. (Imagine that!)
Regarding Donald Trump — although the man will remain a political force — he’ll never mount another successful presidential run again. His star has faded.
I also think we’ll see a major political realignment in USA politics in 2022 as there is chaos currently. There is talk that the Republican Party has split and the Democrats are frightened as they now have control of the legislature and executive powers — so they no longer can blame their opposition.
Meanwhile, Boris Johnson is still standing and it seems will achieve his goals — as the UK suffers the worst economic cycle in decades.
Maybe they can manipulate their Pound Sterling like the Chinese do with their Yuan/Renminbi when the Euro and USD start wavering.
‘Q’ is not something I subscribe to — but I have no love for the Chinese Communist government and their official statistics are as reliable as the Argentina INDEC statistics agency.
Trump is not my savior any more than Biden is yours and frankly he’s only a figurehead for social WOKE change.
I imagine the USA will still continue to increasingly consume avocados as the delicious and healthy superfood is sustainably harvested from carbon absorbing and oxygen emitting orchards providing needed employment.
Lighten up — this continues to be a very rewarding and prosperous 2021!

Feb 16th, 2021 - 05:21 pm - Link - Report abuse 0As grand-mère is currently returning the enlelkinder to Vitacura — I object to your characterization of a “poor sweet & long suffering frenchie lifetime companion” which is a distorted definition of Madam Defarge.
She no doubt — possesses a dual personality of an affluent bitter & short tempered insufferable frenchie fearsome adversary — who just happens to be the pleasant ma mariée enchantresse during this tranquil period.
After a few days in Chicureo — she’s decamping to Viña for the remainder of the Summer. (This season of Madame’s consecutive stay at the farmhouse is the longest in our tenuous marriage.)
As far as the Chinese — we happen simply to judge from differing perspectives but its clear that we’re going to face COVID mutations for some time.
If it makes you feel better — I acknowledge your country’s ingenious strategy to turn the IMF into the usury villains that they truly are and certainly the creator of COVID (whomever is responsible) has gifted your nation with the perfect excuse to delay (and renegotiate debt) payments.
Today is one of the chilliest Summer days of the season and I sense a feeling of great blessing that we’ve dodged the negative aspects of the pandemic which have resulted in extraordinary advantages and results.
A few more grapes still to be gleaned from the vineyards and we begin the circus revolving seasonal wheel again.
