Presidents of Uruguay, Argentina clash during Mercosur online summit
Argentine President Alberto Fernández told his Uruguayan counterpart Luis Lacalle Pou his country did not want to be “a burden on anyone” when the latter called for signs of “flexibilization” on the part of Mercosur to allow member states to seek unilateral foreign trade agreements elsewhere without the bloc's approval. Hard figures show that except Ecuador, all South American Nations face deficits when trading with the US under one of possible trade agreements including FTAs (*)

MERCOSUR, as a trading bloc, should be executing a planned investment deployment to have a balanced distribution of factories / production facilities in countries-members.
Thus guaranteeing a larger intra-block market for countries-members to acheive volume scale as it is the case within the EU.
That is the precondition to start opening economies, otherwise competition will surely crush local employment.
The problem is that in South America, the private sector lags behind public policies instead of taking the lead.
And we all know how important the economy is to be left in the hands of the politicians, as this example shows...

At 1 : 5, and worse, Brazil should be exporting cars to the US and the rest of the world. The problem, in one word, is taxation. Brazilian manufacturing at the source is highly competitive in both price and quality, but after multilayer taxes, the advantage disappears. Likewise, Brazilian commodities are extremely well positioned at the points of origin in the interior. Again, the problem can be summed up in one word: infrastructure. Soya produced in the interior of Mato Grosso do Sur looses its competitive advantage by the time it reaches shipping ports due to dismal, antiquated, inefficient and corrupt transportation. Finally, I have it on good direct authority that agricultural trade to the US is blocked with thinly veiled environmental and health rules that masquerade for trade protectionism.

I took a stroll over to the old empanada lady to buy today’s lunch as well as my mid-morning marraqueta to enjoy with nectarine jam and butter with fresh brewed coffee.
My plan is to gather some ripe fruit from our orchard — including Angelino plums and Stark Sunglo nectarines along with some large Black Krim tomatoes and fully mature Italian red peppers (corno di toro) which I love roasted.
Then in the mid afternoon — to return to chaos in Chicureo.

There is nothing better than taking a couple of relaxed days away from an anxious woman on the edge — as long as I behave on my best behavior and precisely obey all her commands. (After Sunday — I can safely return to my normal self.)
The final food and cut flowers orders are arriving tomorrow and the gathering has continued to increase in confirmed guests.

Would just like to add a comment regarding FortHay's post way above : the taxation here is indeed what kills Brazilian competitiveness.....but the question is WHY .....because the taxes need to finance an enormously inflated and highly inefficient State (specifically all 3 branches of government - the executive, legislative, judiciary- on on levels, Federal, State and Municipal), which costs hundreds of billions every year, not to mention the institutionalized corruption, incompetence and waste. The flies may change but the s#!t is always the same !
