It looks like Fernández has completed a very successful trip to dodge payments. (This is a national tradition and timing is perfect!)

It’s marvelous morning to again emerge from the perfumed cocoon of our bed to enjoy our humble gypsy camp in Chicureo.

When the supplier learned I was on my way to their warehouse — he agreed that I was correct and conceded that they did not have the specific material ordered at their warehouse — they will have to source it from another company!

I called home that I was returning early and Madame suggested we meet at our favorite restaurant (Donde Gilberto) located on the edge of Chicureo laguna — located next door to the local supermarket where she was still shopping.

We consumed an outrageous amount of ostras de exportación with chilled champenoise while enjoying the sunset. https://www.gilberto.cl

Today and tomorrow — everything will be closed for the elections and yesterday was the last outdoor dining opportunity until Monday. (Everyone was in a mad rush to stock up food and alcohol.)

Although I didn’t receive any promises of compensation — the original agreed upon price will be honored and they admitted they were temporarily out stock. (The price of supplies are rapidly rising!)

I could be bitching and complaining about the wasted time and costs — but in truth I’m contented with how the project has gone fairly easily so far.

The next couple of days we’ll be busy exercising our democratic rights — and witness what I expect to be a debacle for the UDI and RN.

Monday I have a meeting with my favorite Danish shipping company representative to pre-pay sea freight (that’s already 15% higher than last season’s rate) because we expect serious inflation in the coming months. This is the first time we’ve exercised this option and we’re planning to advance-buy as many materials possible.

THINK you have truly impeccable taste in empanadas!

    ¡Saludos de Chicureo!

The IMF represents the most naked form of imperialism that, until today, overwhelms the dreams of the people of the South of the Planet. The farther we are from the West, the better it will be for us in the South.

Although Zyklon B was a cyanide-based pesticide used to gas millions — they also used other methods as well.

EXACTLY I had a wonderful time working in the São Francisco Valley and I really enjoyed Santa Catarina. Your people are of many ethnicities (including over a million Japanese) but all speaking Portuguese and proudly identifying themselves as Brazilian!

My conclusion is that your ideal economic model is perhaps far opposite to mine — but I have no animosity towards you.

After all — we now live in a world where the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few — correct?

Anyway politics and economics aside — massive inflation seems to be the focal point for the next year or more. Food prices will increase substantially — including avocados as our production costs are already soaring.

Well as THINK would confirm — and as I assumed — we are at the complete opposites of the political spectrum.

The question I have is what Communist philosophy do you embrace?

Obviously I would imagine Brazilian Communism — but does that mean a strict interpretation like Maoism or perhaps the more capitalistic Communist Party of China version instead?

My version on the other side is more based on the Milton Friedman capitalism embraced during our transition from the Allende Unidad Popular to what we now have currently in Chile.

I’m ever reminded by Neruda — “Podrán cortar todas las flores, pero no podrán detener la primavera.”

We here are always at the mercy and vicious wrath of the most powerful Goddess Pachamama — and we humble growers must hope she’ll bless us this Winter with glorious snow.

(Madame has even checked her marvelous BOGNER suit still fits perfectly her figure.)

One thing I will say about our democratic election process is it’s absolutely transparent and fair. There is no need for the old thought of “a veces la democracia ha de ser bañada en sangre” thinking — but I can only hope our new constitution will be constructed intelligently.

Our youngest daughter and her paramour are gracing our home for today’s le déjeuner which Madame is preparing a Lenguado* meunière with baby butter garlic potatoes and all the accompaniments.

They both have been spending a lot of time together — notably mostly at Lago Panguipulli which they’ve encouraged us to also enjoy. (Madame has fallen in love with the gentleman — which normally is the kiss of death — but our daughter is highly unpredictable.)

As far as the mortality rate in Italy — is it sincerely that grave? We’re obviously seeing the effects here but it seems diminished.

Stay well and careful of those local seductresses...

Yes, your conjecture is as valid as mine why my countrymen ignored the polls.

We enjoyed a marvelous lunch yesterday and our conversation was remarkably pleasant. Our guest gave an interesting perspective to the past 24 months in that the pandemic itself has been highly beneficial to quell the rising unrest and near-revolution which filled our Santiago streets of angry protesters. (The COVID restrictions were a necessary pressure valve release of what was about to cripple our government.)

Despite obvious economic losses in certain businesses — on the whole — almost everyone else’s have experienced substancial profits. He sees the current business opportunities from a Machiavellian point of view — as he says we need to intelligently play the cards we are dealt.

What is certainly obvious is we’ll experience major labor strikes led by the CUT (Central Unitaria de Trabajadores) which will be followed by the port workers going on strike perhaps in the middle of our export shipments. (Inflation will be the trigger as the basic cost of living will rise rapidly.)

Certainly the voter turnout over the weekend was significantly low — especially in the lower income districts of my country. Our media here is not certain if it was due to the pandemic or the abstract phenomenon of a constitutional convention. But I think it was the overwhelming number of candidates that left many confused whom to vote.

In any case — I expect the convention sadly to be a circus because the whatever their proposals, they will have been elected by a small fraction of the electorate eventual newly-drafted Constitution. A lot depends on those chosen to write the new one which will be decided upon in another election next year.

The major threat to our economy is unanticipated legislation. (We know taxes will rise — but the concern is punitive taxes and excessive labor reform.)

We have opened up a Pandora’s Box to satisfy a lazy WOKE generation.

Actually, Chile has had one of the most developed social insurance systems of any of the Latin American countries, with programs for old-age, survivors, and disability insurance, national health insurance, work injury, unemployment insurance, family allowances, and general coverage for wage and salaried workers.

Unlike many other of our neighbors — our retirement system is protected from political looting like we see normally happens on our continent. (We also enjoy an independent central bank — which protects us from hyperinflation.)

As far as my drinking — I tend to avoid the hard stuff and generally enjoy wine. (On a hot day — nothing beats a cold beer!)

When I was in your marvelous country — I of course enjoyed caipirinha made with your cachaça — but mostly I drank your very high quality beer served ice-cold.

You’ll be heartened that the Partido Comunista de Chile did a decent showing in this past two days of voting.

As I said earlier — there is no need for the old thought of “a veces la democracia ha de ser bañada en sangre” thinking — our democratic election process is absolutely transparent and fair.

I can only hope our new constitution will be constructed intelligently.

Frankly, the majority of my countrymen (that were given two days to freely vote) ignored the polls and the result somewhat shames their patriotic responsibility.

In answer to your question: The unfortunate insurrection that occurred that resulted in literally over a million people on the streets protesting the increased costs of living combined with a stagnant earnings situation was untenable and was brilliantly utilized to destroy massive public infrastructure with Santiago’s transit system nearly senselessly destroyed.

The military was called in to reestablish order and they had no experience or training to handle the massive riots. Unfortunately many people were mistreated including officers that were injured by Molotov cocktails.

The officials that were caught abusing human rights have been prosecuted — but the major metropolitan areas of Chile were sadly severely scarred.

THINK as you show what the poet said:

No ha habido Rey jamás que sujetase
    esta soberbia gente libertada,
ni extranjera nación que se jactase
de haber dado en sus términos pisada,
    ni comarcana tierra que osase
mover en contra y levantar espada,
    siempre fue exenta, indómita, temida,
de leyes libre, y de cerviz erguida.

Regarding forced universal voting — it’s a concept of the past which was democratically voted to be eliminated. The people decided — not the government!

Actually the Communists made a decent showing — so why are you so sour?

I have indeed studied Niccolò Machiavelli and have followed much of his wisdom as the family of my youngest daughter’s family also does profitably as well. (The difference is their dealt cards are stacked with aces...)

    And yes I know...

This unfortunate pandemic has been profitable for my extended family — and certainly an enormous windfall for the ABC1 economic class.

Unfortunately — the unskilled underprivileged will experience severe economic difficulties in the coming months due to inflated costs of living.

I have predicted over a year ago that the UDI and RN would lose significant power...

The only raised eyebrow of mine was that IF the current results hold — ten women will have to give up their spots to male candidates — due to the gender parity norm insisted upon by our women!

Although the media is touting the losses of the UDI and RN parties — the opposition* was equally brutalized in the polls with many new factions now achieving position in our government. (*Mistakenly described by the media as the “center-right)

Democracy has that effect and perhaps your Marxist anarchists may have destabilized the right — but also the traditional opposition has fallen INSTEAD of assuming power as earlier predicted.

As you illustrate the remarkable 1895 observation: “Este elemento poderoso e importantísimo de la colonización extranjera ha venido a completar el cuadro del portentoso desarrollo que ha tenido la vieja y heroica Araucanía, arrancada a la barbarie en tres siglos de tenaz y sangriento batallar y transformada por el riel y la civilización, en tres bien escasos lustros, en fuente vigorosa de producción y poderosa y rica comunidad social y política.”

Considering that my heritage is from the humble immigrants simply emigrating to improve the future for their descendants — that 1895 text signifies our vibrant open democracy that’s freely elected including reserving the indigenous political power.

What I worry about is extreme changes which could threaten my country’s status as one of the wealthiest and most stable democracies in Latin America — especially changes to private land and water rights.

After all — your beloved Argentina once had the status of one of the greatest republics on earth. Today your government struggles to remain solvent.

Democracy in its purest and most transparent manner has completely upset the cart of the traditional political parties by the independents now gaining amazing power! Who are the independents...

“...porque son de una diversidad maravillosa, habrá que observarlos. Pero seguro que traen energía social, porque energía del sistema político anterior no traen. ...es evidente que se ha manifestado una presencia social que no estaba representada. Y en ese sentido, es como octubre. El actor octubre no tenía quién lo representara ni formulara su demanda racional. Pero sin ellos, todo este proceso estaría en nada.”

    No..., no..., no....

He is an infiltrated, fifth columnist Argie-Venezuelan-Castrist-Iranian agitator...!

Stingo.., and fourteen members of his family and closest friends should be fusilated at Los Hornos de Chillán..., then the place should be dinamitated by private initiative..., then the State should buy the dinamitated field and create a “Place of Memory” that..., of course..., will..., for ever be Closed to the Public” so nobody would be offended..., then there would be no one in the whole universe that would remember him or his Communist ideas...

    Capisce...?

Oh please calm down — as I said there is no need for the old thought of “a veces la democracia ha de ser bañada en sangre” thinking — our democratic election process is absolutely transparent and fair.

No matter how idealistic Stingo and his followers are — reversing the pension, health and education reality — is something far from his reach.

Like I also earlier mentioned the opposition is crippled — the loss in real wages with increased living costs will be a slap to the faces of those who cause new investment into our economy.

Almost all my friends expected the RN and UDI to lose terribly — but not what would happen to our opposition.

Even the USD/CLP exchange has been beneficial to our family farm.

Reading the newspapers this morning has never been so entertaining!

(Madame made a wonderful breakfast which I’ve been sharing the bacon with Danke.)

The traditional political opposition to the left has taken their losses like little crybabies — and the news interviews are hilarious!

Having a Communist mayor of Santiago can’t be any worse than the horrible mayor of London with awful taste and it actually should be fun: https://youtu.be/h-Swc9Iu0AM

To paraphrase the great Walt Kelly: “Don't take life so serious, THINK, it ain't nohow permanent.”

Traces of nobility, gentleness and courage persist in all people, do what we will to stamp out the trend. So, too, do those characteristics which are ugly. It is just unfortunate that in the clumsy hands of a humble campesino all traits become ridiculous, leading to a certain amount of self-conscious expostulation and the desire to join battle.

There is no need to sally forth, for it remains true that those things which make us human are, curiously enough, always close at hand. Resolve then, that on this very ground, with small flags waving and tinny blast on tiny trumpets, we shall meet the enemy, and not only may he be ours, he may be us. Forward!

Unfortunate legislation may be enacted and taxes will increase — but we all saw that happening when the rioting occurred last year. We’re playing in a fixed card game and yet we already know who will eventually win. It’s been that way (with a few interruptions ) since the 1500s.

The best break anybody ever gets is in bein' alive in the first place. An' you don't unnerstan' what a perfect deal it is until you realizes that you ain't gone be stuck with it forever, either.

As long as we have sufficient snow for skiing — 2021 will prove perhaps to be marvelous!

    ¡Saludos de Chile!

(With my respects to Walt Kelly who has never been forgotten.)
