Health authorities from the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica Region in the southernmost Patagonian territory reported on Monday 59 new coronavirus contagions, which means the number of active cases in the region stands at 469.
Most of new contagions are in the capital Punta Arenas, 37, and Puerto Natales, 16, according to the daily report. In effect 22% of new cases was detected through testing, mostly swabs. The number of tests addressed in the local labs totaled 812, said the report.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic, March 17 last year, the Magallanes Region has reported 27,486 Covid 19 cases with a death toll of 395.
Magallanes is one of the least populated regions of Chile with 165,600, while Punta Arenas, capital, port and main city has 125,000 according to the last census from 2017.
