Uruguay's new Minister of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP), José Luis Falero, suffered a seizure in the early hours of Tuesday morning and was rushed to a Montevideo clinic for further medical assistance.
According to media reports, Falero has a benign-looking tumour near his eye and is to have it removed through a surgical procedure, but was otherwise said to be well, although he had a dislocated fracture in his right shoulder from the fall, for which he has already been treated.
Falero has served as mayor of San José among other public offices until he was summoned last month to head the MTOP after Luis Alberto Heber left the job to take over the Interior Ministry from the late Jorge Larrañaga.
San José Mayor Ana Bentaberry reported in a statement that Falero fell to the ground and fractured his shoulder, for which he underwent surgery.
