Argentine congress fearful Falklands' new port could overshadow Ushuaia

Full article 31 comments

The Argentine congress is restless and is concerned since the Falkland Islands started to build its new deep water port, fearing, besides the usual cacophony of claims, that the Islands could replace Ushuaia as the main access to Antarctica. Read full article

Well. The present port facility, FIPASS, has been an INTERIM solution for nearly 40 years. So it is really time for a permanent port to be built. If Ushuaia, TDF and Argentina are afraid of competition, so what. It is their problem to make themselves more compatible. They also must compete with Chile and Punta Arenas. But competition is only good and there should be no monopoly in this case. If some European polar research institutes chose Stanley before Ushuaia it is not only a matter of which port is the best. Argentina is a much more unstable and unpredictable country, so perhaps they choose the F.I. instead. Like the Germans did earlier this year.

I do not think the Argentine defence or foreign ministers have more knowledge of this project than I have, as a private person, through the Internet. Why, really, should they be specially informed? This is none of their business.

Now they will as usual waste a lot their taxpayers' money to go the UN to moan about this. Argentina has already one of most expensive political systems in the world:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-e_IfN6LFvM

I think they could save a lot of money just ignoring this “Malvinas” bullshit.

I don't see how improving infrastructure can be seen as breaching and UN resolutions, Danny. Is he also suggesting that building a new extension to the hospital will also impinge on resolutions? And I don't really understand why they might think the port will take traffic away from Ushaia, they don't like British-flagged vessels using their ports, so it makes sense that they have somewhere to berth.
As for approaching the Argentine government. Why? They have nothing to with the Falkland Islands Government. Any decisions made on-island have nothing to do with Danny Filmus or anyone else.

And how does Argentina claim the British Sub-Antarctica and Antarctic Islands?

    Seems awfully dubious.

Amazing how predictions made many years befor the 1982 war have become true.
Many locals back then believed the real reason Argentina made a claim in the 1830's was because even back then they knew that the southern Atlantic Ocean held all future wealth and they wanted it all for themselves. This led to the removal of all the indigenous people and anyone else for that matter in the south of Latin America.
Today a small community of people on a group of islands are the only ones now standing in their way and they are struggling to remove us because of the fact we are not only protected by Britain, but by the fact we are nearly 400 miles out in the Atlantic from their easy reach.
Now they fear because of the fact they can do nothing to stop the islands developing their own economy the Islanders could further threaten their ability to control the prize. That is the gateway to Antartica in the South Atlantic.
Argentina has so mismanaged their own economy they are on the brink of total collapse and the Falkland Islanders who are doing extremely well financially has them clutching at that elusive straw.
Just 3500 inhabitants are able to scare 45 million Argentines is quite an achievement in todays political realm.
Simple answer to all of this is for Argentina to remove it's illegal claim and start working with these very succesful people on the islands and not against them.
Showing aggression only tightens the noose around the neck of the Argentine economy.
Time they came into the 21st century maybe.

Espoecially when the new port is actually nothing to to do with the British Govt either(they only fund defence)- its being paid for by Falkland Islands Govt and us taxpayers.

Sadly, the new port in Stanley will not be any competition as an Antarctic Gateway until the Falklands get to grips with the ridiculous restrictions placed by the military on operations into the international airport at Mount Pleasant.
With around one in three flights delayed by 24 hours or more due to over-cautious forecasting and rules imposed by the military far more restrictive than airports such as Ushuaia, Madeira, Gibraltar, that have equally challenging winds, even British Antarctic Survey have long since moved the majority of their logistic air support activities to Punta Arenas.
Punta Arenas, and Ushuaia, with their regular and frequent internal and international air links will always have the advantage over the Falklands.

the competition would not have to move very fast to complete their port improvements before fig even starts theirs. but the competition also lives in a land of manana. whoever can pull their finger out first should win the day! lol

I too am alarmed with THINK’s absence and although I hope it’s because of some wonderful Mediterranean adventure — but the pandemic remains in my thoughts.

Although I’m tempted to continue to expose Terence Hill as Skippy Jessop — ignobly stealing the valor of a RAF airman of the 1962 Cuba Missile Crisis — I will cease my on going debate as my point has been made.

(For the curious — he has his own Wikipedia article as well as a broad presence on social media.)

Jack Bauer and I, among others have been continuously disgusted with Skippy’s antics — but I accede to your suggestion.

Maybe Think has changed his identity.
Maybe he is on the islands with the international red cross team. Who knows.
He may even be on the island posing as a dock worker to source the new port facility. You just dont know.
He may even be seriously I'll somewhere again we just dont know.
What we do know is that he has been very quiet on social media. Maybe he has a game plan we are yet to uncover.
The problems in Afghanistan have dominated most news outlets so maybe he is concentrating in that area. Could even be there for all we know.
Personally it does not affect me. We are enjoying life to the full on the free Falkland Islands.
Progressing our dreams little by little including the new deep water port.
Still relatively covid free so all in all doing fine.
Feel for those caught up in the Afghan issue. As do I feel for those other poor soles around the world caught up in earthquakes and tornadoes. Even those who are in poverty. Few of us realise how lucky we are just being able to complain about our differences.
In the wider world it is trying for a great many people.

It is true that this new port will threathen Ushuaias position as the gateway port to Antarctica.

Ushuaia has pissed at the Antarctic operators for many years, culminating last year in banning re-entry to Ushuaia of ships that had left from there 2 weeks prior in March 2020. Ships that were cruising in what Argentina considers their water. Creating a serious dent in their claim.

Sailing out of Stanley will be quite convenient, no need for a local pilot as you are in open water in a couple of minutes as opposed to Ushuiaia which requires a local pilot and a long exit out of the Beagle.

“Is narcissism a mental illness? According to the DSM-V, the answer is yes. Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental illness associated with a persistent pattern of entitlement, lack of empathy, and grandiosity.”
Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a pattern of self-centered and egotistical behavior that is destructive to others. We all have (or should have) some self-love which is not the same thing. Just because we like to take selfies does not mean we hurt people. This egotistical behavior goes much further, they put their own needs before others and they tend to not only step on people that get in their way but actually go out of their way to crush/ruin/hurt them. At this time their is no cure for NPD and most people affected by this are not self aware to get help. They have no interest in changing and therefore they rarely seek counseling.
    • Pathological liars

    • Self Grandiosity

    • Destructive Behavior
The disorder begins by early adulthood and is indicated by at least five of the following:
    10. An exaggerated sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)
    11. Preoccupation with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
    12. Believes he/she is “special” and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)
    13. Requires excessive admiration
    14. Has a sense of entitlement
    15. Selfishly takes advantage of others to achieve his own ends
    16. Lacks empathy
    17. Is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him
    18. Shows arrogant, haughty, patronizing, or contemptuous behaviors or attitudes

    Good to see your appearance!

You can clearly see the Utah dwelling troll seething mad as we ignore him.

We’re back to normal activity as the nursery delivers the first avocado trees starting Monday to achieve nearly two an a half hectares on the reclaimed hillside.

Although we’ve been experimenting with foreign wines for our holiday — we’re now back to domestic offerings and now only buy whites — as we have way too many reds that will last us for some time.

We recently attended a luncheon with a tasting of a flight of Errazuriz Don Maximiliano ‘05 — ‘10— ‘17 which really showed the consistent high quality of the icon which places it at the top ten Chile reds.

In the end — we do think laying down a case for a decade in ideal conditions — is the best method to enjoy reds. Although prices have risen substantially since last September — but still are selling at a 40% discount of normal pricing in case lots.

Hoping all is well with you and your family!

    Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD).
A type of personality disorder in which a person has grandiose fantasies of success and power with few or no achievements behind the fantasies. People with the disorder are constantly comparing themselves to others and feeling envious. They may also feel others are envious of them. They believe they are unique and entitled to special treatment, admiration, and obedience. In addition, they lack emotional empathy and have a willingness to exploit others for their own benefit.

Considered to be sub-types of ASPD where the criteria must include disregard of laws and norms. Their meanings have changed over time and are used inconsistently. Only the term “psychopath” has been recognized in the DSM-5, and it is not an official diagnosis. Some researchers believe that a psychopath is more biologically-determined and a person’s environment is more responsible for producing a sociopath.. Indeed, never read so much garbage as in his last two posts......besides being an unsavory character, the creature is very contradictory....with him, it's a 'catch22' situation'.... .....you expose his bs, he gets pissed-off ; you ignore him, he also gets pissed-off - but at least by ignoring him we don't waste our time.

You're right about the Penfolds....have had quite a few of them, and some are quite fantastic, full bodied, aromatic, round, velvety, and persistent....Have never seen it in Brazil, but if the St Henri is comparable to Don Maximiano, has to be damned good !

    Chicureo, Pugol-H

Good afternoon to both of you.....Pugol, glad to see you are ok.

I know that there are far better things to chat about on here, but in view of the above garbage, directed at us, I have little choice but to put things in their true perspective.

Well, we can no longer be accused of harassing Terence Shite-Hill, aka Skippy, Gollum, Smeagol, the F*ckwitt and a load of other appropriate descriptions.
We gave him the chance to back down, to stop looking for opportunities to unload his smelly garbage, but he just can't help himself....worst is that even after pointing it out to him, he just keeps on.....
Even without referring to him, far less mentioning him, he insists on poking his proboscis where it's not called....into exchanges that talk about food, wine, travel etc, and tries to pooh-pooh them as if we were telling lies.....does he really think that eating good food, drinking great wines etc, is something that doesn't exist, and therefore we “must” be lying ?
Are we to blame if he believes that having a good life, doesn't exist ?
Why doesn't he accept the truce offered him ?

Then he complains - in his usual manner - by posting ridiculous texts, full of quotes, definitions, dramatic denials, which anyone with half a brain knows are senseless.

Does he want us to continually expose some of the nasty truths about him, such as his false claims as being in the RAF - other than as a lavatory cleaner - and his inflatable dolls, with which he lives in his dear old Ma's dingy basement ?

If he never pokes his nose again where it's not called, I would consider leaving him alone in his misery......let's see if he is smart enough to know when to stop.
