By George Foulkes (*) – This month marks the 40th anniversary of the start of the Falklands war – a conflict that cost both British and Argentine sides dearly and ultimately failed to resolve the dispute over the Islands' sovereignty, which continues to this day. Read full article

Disclaimer & comment rulesMP George Foulkes had been an opponent of Thatcher's policies during the war and had found a more receptive audience for his ideas after the war's end. He helped organise a vociferous press campaign to change the British governments expensive commitment to the Falklands. (Sovereignty Dispute Over the Falklands, Gustafson, L. p178).
Apr 11th, 2022 - 10:46 am - Link - Report abuse +3He has visited Narnia on a number of occasions.
Clearly Foulkes has o idea about the issues involved.
Apr 11th, 2022 - 11:33 am - Link - Report abuse +3He says diplomacy was required in order to find a long term solution acceptable to all sides – Britain, Argentina and the Islanders. without apparently being aware that Argentina has stated ad nauseum that islanders don't get a say in the matter
Foulkes said he has been to Argentina - Has he ever visited the Falklands?
Apr 11th, 2022 - 11:43 am - Link - Report abuse +4He also says ''...... a war could not satisfactorily resolve this issue and diplomacy was required....'', so what would he have suggested when the Argies invaded? Simply sit back and express our concern through a telegram to Galtieri?
To paraphrase Basil Fawlty, the Argies invaded - ''they started it'', so the only other alternative was to allow the occupation unchallenged. The Brits didn't start a war - it was the hostile invasion which did that. ....Much like the situation in Ukraine.
Oooooooooooooooooops... :-)))

The perpetual self dignifying denial all British people and most warring societies make, is forgetting that all war's most obvious first physical offense or violence is preceded and provoked by a 'moral offense'. Countries react often ensuing first forwardly unwavering moral offenses by the other country. THAT'S WHAT ACTUALLY STARTS WARS, the contemptuous lack of respect for other nations. Such was Britain's bullying actions on Malvinas in 1833. Such were US UK and NATO actions in Ukraine against Russia for the last decade. You can't continue slander, propagandistically assault, culturally defame, and label accusingly those who are unhostile towards you as your nemesis or the enemy without deserving a slap at some point. For the last 150 years, the whole world has been covered by conflict zones in some form initiated at their source by Britain, the US or France, often intentionally in gradual perverse ways.
Apr 11th, 2022 - 02:59 pm - Link - Report abuse -8The Military Junta in Argentina betrayed and tricked the Argentine people in 1982 by taking back the islands through military invasion, forcing a natural reaction to cheer their recuperation. And yet, it was not 'war' yet nor would have it ever been the death of 1000 soldiers had it not been for Britain (and the US's) opportunistic and selfish self serving decision to strategically war full out on the islander's home. The fact that no islander expresses offense or resentment towards this speaks loudly of their social indoctrination. The islanders are clearly afraid of holding Britain accountable for refusing to end well the dispute with Argentina, or to hold Britain accountable for forcing war and all its sociological ramifications onto their social development, and onto their rapport with the Argentinian people from that point on. It is clearly in Britain's self interest to maintain a colonized mentality with no political character or backbone in the islanders, and not risk they remove themselves objectively from a situation they never were a target of.
What are you going on about Trimonde - you are deluded!

What exactly are you referring to? You are aware that Ukraine is not a member of NATO? And as for “those who are unhostile to you” - do you remember that in 2014 Russia annexed Crimea by force, and then in 2022 invaded the rest of Ukraine. Exactly who is the aggressor here?
This is not the first time that Faux Foulkes has revealed the mendacious old fool that he is. Must be an audience for that on the Labour side.
Apr 11th, 2022 - 05:52 pm - Link - Report abuse +3Mollymauk, I think you need to read up a little history regarding Ukraine and stop believing the propaganda mainstream media brainwashes you with.
Apr 11th, 2022 - 07:21 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Ukraine” in fact was never a state; it was always an annex to another state or empire such as Poland, Austria-Hungary, Turkey, and crucially Russia.
The landmark Russian state was Kievan Rus. “Ukraine”, in old Russian, means “border region”. In the past, it referred to the westernmost regions of the Russian Empire. When the Empire started expanding south, the new regions annexed mostly from Turkish rule were called Novorossiya (“New Russia”) and the northeastern regions, Malorossiya (“Little Russia”).
It was up to the USSR in the early 1920s to jumble it all together and name it “Ukraine” – adding Galicia in the west, which was historically non-Russian.
Yet the key development is when the USSR broke up in 1991. As the Empire of Lies de facto controlled post-Soviet Russia, they could never have possibly allowed the real Russian regions of the USSR – that is, Novorossiya and Malorossiya – to be again incorporated to the Russian Federation.
Russia is now re-incorporating them – in an “I Did It, My Way” manner.
Foulkes is suspect, very suspect, his intentions are not clear, all that IS clear is that he hasn't a clue about Argentina. If he had two brain cells to rub together he would know that it is Mount Pleasant which preserves the peace and life of everybody: Argentines, Islanders and British. If Mount pleasant had been there in 1982 there would be a lot more people alive today.
Apr 11th, 2022 - 10:27 pm - Link - Report abuse +2If it works don't fix it Foulkes baby! You really should go back to your pram and read up a bit before going around preparing another war as Labour did in the 70s and in the 40s. Labour went and put the Falklands on the list for decolonization THAT without consulting the islanders was the root of ALL evil! It was Labour which caused the Falklands war with its concessions selling out to Argentina in the late 1940s and 1970s! No more bright Marxist ideas please Labour will get more people killed.
Foulkes is a hero of mine.
Apr 11th, 2022 - 11:13 pm - Link - Report abuse +1A quote from my very own research for 1984
June 14th, British MP George Foulkes, founding member of the South Atlantic Council, meets Argentine officials at a seminar hosted in the USA by the University of Maryland.
“In a seminar on the Falkland Islands sponsored in 1984 by the University of Maryland, where parliamentarians from Argentina and the United Kingdom met, Labor George Foulkes recommended to Argentines that in future documents on the matter, the diplomats of our country use in the wording the following sentence:
... negotiate on all pending problems between the countries, including all aspects concerning the future of the islands.
In this way, the word sovereignty disappeared, as the British wanted, and the Argentines could convince themselves that as it was all a matter of interpretations, their interests were tacitly included.” [ Herrero 2020 citing Cardoso et al 2012]
The change in wording between the 1984 UN Resolution and that of 1985 is dramatic.
1. Requests the Governments of Argentina and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to initiate negotiations with a view to finding the means to resolve peacefully and definitively the pending problems between both countries, including all aspects on the future of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas), in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations”
Goodbye to references to previous UN resolutions, notably including 2065, and no mention of sovereignty. That wording remained, largely unchanged, until 1988 when negotiations were initiated and the resolution answered to the UN's satisfaction (as there have been no more).
So thanks to George, 2065 et al were buried at the UN in 1985.
Well done George Foulkes

Apr 12th, 2022 - 11:22 am - Link - Report abuse +2The reason why the 1982 war did not resolve the Malvinas dispute is simple. It is because Britain showed mercy, it showed pity for the Argentine people and their Peronist indoctrination. It is mercy you would have seen from very few other countries.
Try invading Chinese territory and see their response, attack Hawaii and see how the US react, invade Crimea and see Putins response....they would annihilate you! They would bomb you back to the Stone Age.
Argentina invaded British territory and our response was to regain it at the lowest cost and return it to the inhabitants. We could have sunk the entire Argentine Navy and bombed major Argentine cities until there was an unconditional surrender including no future reference to Malvinas fairy tales. We showed you pity.....
You are a very silly fellow. You talk of bullying actions in 1833....this is laughable and pathetic. Britain asked 26 murderers and rapists to leave the Falklands 90 days after they arrived.....
Monkeymagic, Trimonstruosidades, like his fellow National Socialist, Gauchito Drink, are rather fond of murder and rape...

Apr 13th, 2022 - 07:49 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Dear George Foulkes, having read your brilliant article Britain won the Falklands war but paid a steep price and the dispute isn’t settled I can conclude that you are a very intelligent person whose ability to assess what happens in the world is far above par.
Apr 15th, 2022 - 06:01 pm - Link - Report abuse 0For that reason, I have decided to make you an offer, a bussiness opportunity which is second to none.
I own the Eifel Tower in Paris, but as I am in severe need of cash, you can become the new owner at a very fair price. Tell me how much money you have and how much more you can borrow. I promise it won’t be too expensive. Imagine the wonderful feeling of being the, albeit secret, owner of the greatest Eifel Tower in the world, the envy of everybody else.
If you aren’t interested in a tower in Europe, there is another great opportunity: My friend George have got this nice bridge in Brooklyn, which he will let you have on the cheap.
