Europe bans imports of products involving deforestation

The European Union Wednesday banned the import of products such as soy, meat, or wood that might involve deforestation in their processes. The measure also reached leather, furniture, palm oil, paper, cocoa, coffee, and rubber and their byproducts. Read full article

    Europe is an important market. If Europe wants to protect the environment, forests, and carbon deposits (coal mines), Europe should set targets and deadlines before imposing a ban on anything.

    The market is big! We produce vegetable and animal protein. It is not a blockade that will stop the way we manage the Amazon. There are many markets beyond Europe that can trade with us.

    Fruit producers in the Nordeste taught me some time ago how the US uses 'sanitary' and USDA inspection rules to exclude them from the US market in favor of their Chilean competitors. I suspect similar machinations are at work behind the scenes with this virtue signaling smoke screen. Follow the money and see who benefits.
