Former US President Donald J. Trump seems to have been right after all when he announced that he would be incarcerated. He was not entirely accurate about the when, but he is now expected to be formally arrested and arraigned next Tuesday after being indicted by a grand jury on Thursday.

The former head of state faces charges related to paying off porn star Stormy Daniels during his 2016 presidential campaign to remain silent about an alleged affair between the two of them. According to local media, Trump is believed to have used campaign funds for those financial arrangements; hence, the alleged crime. However, the indictment remains under seal, and therefore the exact charges are yet to be disclosed, although CNN spoke of more than 30 counts.

Since Trump has announced he plans to run for the White House again in 2024, he became both the only president, current or former, as well as the only presidential candidate to be indicted.

In a statement, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office said it has contacted Trump's attorney “to coordinate his surrender to the Manhattan D.A.'s Office for arraignment on a Supreme Court indictment.”

Trump, who lives in Florida, is expected to travel to New York on Monday and spend the night at Trump Tower before appearing in court Tuesday. Once in custody, he would be fingerprinted and photographed before being arraigned before a judge and released on his personal recognizance, it was reported.

Trump's campaign has used the indictment in its fundraising efforts and said it raised more than US$ 4 million in the first 24 hours after the indictment was announced.

“This is Political Persecution and Election Interference at the highest level in history,” Trump wrote on social media. “The Democrats have lied, cheated, and stolen in their obsession with trying to 'Get Trump,' but now they've done the unthinkable — indicting a completely innocent person in an act of blatant election interference,” added Trump, who insisted that his indictment “will backfire massively on [President] Joe Biden.”

Meanwhile, the 44-year-old Daniels celebrated the news and the fact that Trump is “no longer untouchable.” The porn actress also claimed that in the first hours after Trump's indictment, she received death threats on social networks, and also by phone and email.

Nevertheless, she admitted she was “proud” of Trump's “monumental and epic” indictment. “The other part of this is that it's going to continue to divide people and get them up in arms. [Trump] has already gotten away with inciting riots and causing death and destruction,” Daniels said. “Whatever the outcome, it's going to provoke violence and there will be injuries and death,” warned Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford. She claims to have had sex with Trump in 2006, just months after the tycoon's third wife, Melania, gave birth to their son Barron.
