By Jorge G Castañeda and Carlos Ominami (*), NEW YORK – The best way to safeguard democracy in Latin America is to build strong welfare states. But since this is a medium- to long-term project, meeting the short-term threat of authoritarian populism will require more immediate solutions. Read full article

    Government handouts good for democracy,
    and of course,
    Donald Trump bad for democracy.

If welfare, handout politicians get elected legitimately, that is good democracy.

If conservative, limit government, politicians get elected legitimately, that is a pseudo-democracy.

And where are these authors from? No surprise, New York City.

Handout democracy has already been around for a long time. Maybe the “democracy frustration” is because people are frustrated with how poorly already existing “welfare democracy” works.

And Argentina is a beautiful example of an existing welfare state.

Peronism is a total welfare state! It's economy and the lives of it's people, suck!

These authors think Argentina needs yet more welfare!

These authors say Javier Milei is an anti-democratic populist because, he wants people to stop getting paid for nothing, and to only pay people who work for a living. So, he is very dangerous.

So, these geniuses say that what is urgently needed to counteract the failures of the existing welfare/handout state, is “more” handouts.

Nice report! They are perfect candidates for the UN.

I would make the distinction between a ‘welfare state’ and handouts.

You can live on welfare/benefits in the UK but it is a far cry from paying people to be poor.

As for Donald Duck Trump, when he found out steriliser kills covid dead 100%, he was talking about injecting people with steriliser, until someone told him that steriliser would also kill the people.

He is cunning all right, but essentially not very clever.

    Very poor article.

Where do you draw the line between genuine welfare and state handouts.

The UK is well known as a “ Nanny State ” regarding welfare payments
Most likely why some immigrants, asylum seekers etc. travel across Europe to get to the UK.
Even so some European countries take far more immigrants ( Economic or Asylum ) overall than the UK.
The UK has cut back on welfare payments to what it was several decades ago.

“The UK is well known as a “ Nanny State ”

How dare a government put public interests ahead of private interests.
Don’t they know about the ‘trickle-down’ effect, where private donations will appropriately always provide the necessary-stop gap. If you believe that, I’ve got some land in Florida I can sell you.

    According to this:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_social_welfare_spending

UK is no 17 in Europe, hardly a nanny state by European standards.

Anyone thinking it is should try living on the dole in the UK.

    I never mentioned rankings
I said the UK has cut back on Welfare over the past several decades compared to what it was
It is still a Nanny state, but less so than in the past

Born out by my other statement of the myth of being overrun with asylum seekers/economic migrants, it is a very small percentage compared to other European countries, who take far more,
Plenty of Nanny States in Europe.
