Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) Wednesday posted a video on social media saying he was recovering well from his bout of Covid-19. Interior Minister Adán López Hernández said the head of state would resume his duties before the weekend.

“As president of Mexico, I have the responsibility to inform you about my state of health, I have already done so, but in any case, as there has been speculation, it is important to tell you that I am well,” AMLO, 69, said. The president also explained that his Covid-19 case ”was complicated because I went on a very intense tour that began in the state of Veracruz, there was a change in the weather and then I went to Quintana Roo, I was in Chetumal, Cancun, and Merida (Yucatan) and there I had a crisis.”

He said that his blood pressure dropped ”and while I was in a meeting with military engineers, evaluating the Mayan Train, I kind of fell asleep, it was a kind of dizziness and the doctors arrived immediately, (but) I did not lose consciousness, (...) it was a temporary fainting spell and due to the low blood pressure they wanted to take me to the hospital on a stretcher and in an ambulance,“ he explained.

He said that he did not accept these protocols and as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces he asked not to be taken anywhere and in an armchair they treated him and administered a liter of saline solution. ”They raised my blood pressure and it did not become serious, there was no damage to my heart or my brain,“ he said.

”My adversaries have a lot of imagination and it is like telling them: the dead man you kill is in good health“ and has been working on the drafts for the speeches he is to deliver in upcoming events on May 1 and 5.

”The creator and the desires we have to live are going to allow us to finish our mandate“ in September 2024, AMLO insisted while underlining how surprised he was by ”the hatred of some people who would like me to disappear.“

”I see them very lonely, very empty with a lot of hatred,” he added.

López Obrador had already contracted Covid-19 twice before: in January 2021 and in January 2022. He also suffers from hypertension. In January 2022, he had a catheterization and a heart scan. In December 2013 he suffered an acute myocardial infarction, for which he then had coronary surgery.
