Contrary to all the pageantry, rituals, and displays of past Coronations in the United Kingdom, this time Argentina is sending no special, much less extraordinary delegation to the coronation of King Charles III on Saturday, and is limited to the attendance of its ambassador in London, Javier Figueroa. So in 1950 Argentina tried to buy the Falklands. There lies the truth. Proves that Argentina has never had sovereignty over the islands, because if she had, there would not have been an offer to buy what you supposedly already own.
Argentina has always had its eye on the Antarctic and the Falklands are in the way, so claiming them in the hope they can eventually get them is the only way left open to them.
Trying to buy them failed in 1950. Invading them failed in 1982. So their chances of ever again wooing the Islanders or even Britain is now nill.
Time they put the whole affair to rest and moved on.

    Copper..., copper...

It wasn't NO attempt to PURCHASE nothin'...
It was a 1953 VERBAL offer of an amicable LOAN between friends ...
No different from the recent offer Richard SHARP made to BoJo JOHNSON...

    - Do you have ANY EVIDENCE that a PURCHASE OFFER was ever made...? Even a “NO PAPER”...?

According to infobae, an argy propaganda website:

‘Teisaire offered a negotiation for the Malvinas Islands, which included the option to purchase them by the Argentine State.’

‘the Argentine received the answer that accepting such a proposal would mean the automatic fall of the government’.

What is the cost to Argentina of maintaining the Malvinas claim

    “speaking about “NO PAPERS”

Happily, we are all bound by the requirements of international law, in particular UN Charter article 73 . which prohibits any act that prevents the Islanders right of ‘self-determination’.

While Argentina is prevented by her own actions, to any legal recourse.
In other words, she’s up shit’s creek without a paddle.

    Amicable loan between friends, Trunks?
What are you waffling on about?

“Argentine President Juan Domingo Perón tried to buy the Falkland Islands from the Government of London in 1953,... Perón made his firm offer of purchase through a special envoy, who attended the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II of England as Argentine representative on June 2, 1953. The British Government rejected the offer – which did not materialize in a price – for fear that the government of Sir Winston Churchill would
fall. ...The 1953 document details the conversations that the then president of the Argentine Senate had in a central London hotel. Perón's offer was answered with the same arguments that the London authorities use today, 30 years later: Her Majesty's Government considers the sale of the Falkland Islands (British name for the islands) inconceivable because its inhabitants are British. Lord Reading also commented to the Argentine representative that if a referendum was held in the Falklands at that time, its inhabitants would decide to continue under the British flag, to which Teisaire agreed saying that yes, that would probably be true. … Lord Reading ... made it clear that “the Government, with all certainty, would be overthrown” if such a sale operation was allowed.” [El Pais January 3, 1984]

Argentina never offered to buy the Falkland Islands, those are unofficial documents made up of propaganda by the English foregging office.
What if there is, are official memorandums from the English foregging office that prove that what they did in 1833 was an atrocious act... and more memorandums indicating the difficulty of demonstrating the English position and better call to silence.
What yes are acknowledgments of possession, are the attempts of the English Government to offer a shared sovereignty in the 70's and later directly try to push the islanders to accept Argentine sovereignty

    https://falklandstimeline.files.wordpress.com/2022/07/1972-to-1982.pdf

A couple more quotes regarding 1953.

“In 1953, on the occasion of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, the Peronist government sent a mission headed by the senate president (who later became the nation’s vice-president), Alberto Tesaire, in order to offer to buy the Falkland Islands from the United Kingdom as the state had done with the railroads. After conversations at the highest level, the Argentine proposal was rejected by Winston Churchill’s government. The decision took into account the negative repercussions that it would bring to the then prime minister. The
British argument was based on the fact that the inhabitants of the Islands were British, which shows that from that moment this issue was already a central axis of British policy towards the Islands.” [State, national identity and power: a historical tour in search of the causes of the Falklands–Malvinas War Guillermo Mira and Fernando Pedrosa 2021]

“Teisaire took advantage of the days of his stay in London to carry out “a secret and extremely delicate process”: he had a proposal that his interlocutors at the Foreign Office received with surprise: a purchase of the Malvinas Islands. He conveyed the idea during the conversations he held in a central London hotel with the Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Lord Reading, who had responsibility for Latin American affairs.” [La ‘misión Teisaire’ a la coronación de Isabel II y la negociación por Malvinas Mariano Caucino in Infobae September 8, 2022]

Sounds like there was an offer to buy.

So, Argy propaganda website, Spanish and US papers all carry the story!!!

All of whom refer to documents released under the 30 year rule.

As for the original papers, according to the National Archive:

‘Most Foreign Office and Foreign and Commonwealth Office records held at The National Archives are not viewable or downloadable online. To view them you will either need to visit our building in Kew, find references to records on our online catalogue with which you can order copies, or pay for research to be done for you.’

There should be similar documents in Argentina, if someone hasn’t already destroyed them.

Let’s be honest here, if Argentina were today offered the opportunity to buy the Islands, they would sell everything from their grandmothers to their grandchildren and everything in between including the kitchen sink to raise the money, whatever price was asked.

    Argy Planter
What was considered was in the late 70s was a ‘leaseback scheme’, where a ‘leaseback’ would mean that the first party has title to sell to the second party, to then lease back to the first party.

It denies the second party has any title, or they would not have to buy it in the first place.

No mention in the ‘foreign hearsay’ of any Boris style loan.

Febrile imagination in overdrive, searching for a way out of the inevitable conclusion that the Argys accepted the British had Title to the territory.

It should be noted that any ‘condominium’ arrangement would also involve, by definition, Argentina accepting that the British held title.

It should also be noted the whilst the British Gov could agree leaseback/condominium arrangements back then, it cannot do so today as the devolved assembly in the Islands has the final say on any such proposal.

And I think we all know what their answer would be!!!

Anyway, Argentina accepted British title over the Islands in the agreement of 1850, whereas the British have never that accepted Argentina has any legitimate claim to the territory.

Where a ‘without prejudice’ offer to discuss compromise solutions, does not constitute a recognition of anything.

Even today, inherent in Argentina’s demands that the British negotiate sovereignty, is the recognition that the British hold sovereignty.

Argentina should have tried to reach a compromise when they had the chance, they didn’t, they thought they were negotiating a handover and when they realised that was not going to happen, the negotiations broke down.

Regret it and weep, then do try and move on, it’s not going to happen again, ever.

Well on the bright side, when the oil billions/trillions start rolling in, pensioners in the Falklands will be getting more money than the President of Argentina (legal income only included).

With the added advantage that you won’t have to take the money home every day in a wheelbarrow and risk getting mugged for the wheelbarrow.
