Eighty-six-year-old Retired Chilean Army General Hernán Carlos Chacón Soto committed suicide Tuesday moments before he was to be transferred to the Puntateuco jailhouse to begin serving his 25-year sentence for the 1973 abduction and murder of singer-songwriter Victor Jara and Prisons Bureau Director Littré Quiroga, it was reported in Santiago.     Chile not only lost democracy in the 1970s. Chile lost much more. It lost sovereignty and culture as well.

    I hear all the voices from South America. They are all beautiful. But I can't hear the voice of Chile. I hear an incomprehensible rumble.

    Chicureo, that was the tragedy that the glass walls behind which you live do not let you see.

    With all due respect - I endured the Allende nightmare and was very pleased when Pinochet overthrew him 50 years ago.
