According to a report from Brazil's statistics bureau (IBGE) released Thursday, unemployment in South America's largest country stood at 7.9% (around 8.5 million people) in the second quarter of 2023, the lowest number since 2015 and a 0.6% decrease from the quarter ending in April. hahahahahaha, such stats certainly signed scientifically by that infant “actress” who usually says “how dare you” or the genious who pictured giraffes in Amazon rain forests...

I certainly hope this statistic is valid and will continue to improve, especially in the chronically underemployed Nordeste. Far too many young, educated and ambitious people have already left Brazil, many for good, and that brain drain has a disproportionate impact on the nation.

FortHay, do you have doubts about the reliability of the presented data? Any evidence? Or is it just “hope”?

I have full confidence in the IBGE. And with each passing month, I see fewer children begging or selling trinkets at traffic lights. And that, for me, is excellent evidence of the good moment Brazil is going through.

As for these “brains” who left the country, I would like to make it clear that in the six years that followed the 2016 coup d'état, the neoliberal policies and wage squeeze implemented by Temer and Bolsonaro, destroyed our economic environment, increased inequalities and caused hunger in millions of Brazilians. Which, of course, caused some brain drain, especially with Boeing harassing our engineers after the ill-fated sale of Embraer. But nothing worrying and fully reversible if the economic boom that I foresee really happens in the coming years.

unofrtunately here in Sâo Paulo, one does see more and more children and beggars of various “specialties” spread over the city... worsening exeponentially over this years - real inflation/cost of basics escalading way beyond our salaries (except for public servants who enjoy full salary retirement and other benefits no salary-man can even dream, unless passing a test to make part of the “system”... sad but... While even reliable entities like IBGE may produce biased statitscis prompted on conveniently chosen “sampling” to lead to very/most convenient propaganda... and Brazl slides to same disaster situatin as other called demcracies in this region are already struggling... still some may say neighbour countries are thriving nowadays!

Do not be silly! I currently live in a city very close to São Paulo and I see the situation of child begging decreasing day by day.

What you say about the IBGE is typical of Western envy in seeing Brazil getting closer and closer to Russia and China.

The time for you Westerners has come to an end here!

I agree with your sentiments about the underemployed Nordeste young adults.

During my work there it was depressing that few opportunities were available.

Let's hope Brazil obtains economic growth as it has enourmous potential...

Brasileiro, I do not have enough knowledge to trust or doubt the government agencies figures. I do know that the US Labor Department's figures on inflation in the US are misleading at best, designed at worst. Again, as to your and 'no time for you' opposing perceptions of the prevalence of mendigos on the streets of Sao Paulo, I have neither first hand, nor independent confirmation. For several years, however, I have commented to outsiders, primarily in the US, how much better the homeless situation in major Brazilian northeastern cities like Fortaleza, Mossoro and Natal is, compared to the unmitigated disaster in US towns. The majority of streetside beggars now appear to be the unfortunate refugees from Venezuela. Even the politically sponsored 'sem terra' black tarp roadside encampments have disappeared. Not sure where these manipulated folks went, but one hopes they got their 'fourty acres and a mule'. The MP publishes such news and I appreciate hearing it, but they do not do the traditional journalism to seek out independent confirmation or responsible dissent, so I digest all news I read these days with a generous dose of salt.

    Olá Chicureo

Not that it matters, but my mother is from Sergipe from Tanque Novo, district of Riachão do Dantas, from the Amado family. My father was a gaucho who got to know all of Brazil on the top of a truck.

Nobody knew Brazil better than him. He died in my arms at a hospital in Campina Grande, a victim of complications from Covid19.

I give everyone at Mercopress the source of my pride for my country. And I try not to smother them with my lack of education and civility.

I am saying this as a way of reaffirming my desire to see Brazil united and strong to survive the challenges that the world will bring us.

    Best Regards!

I'm sincerely sad about the loss of your father.

COVID was a horrible scourge that was inflicted upon our world.
