Milei pledges to obtain a roadmap for the return of Malvinas during his mandate

Full article 45 comments

On the 42nd anniversary of the start of the Falklands/Malvinas war, President Javier Milei pledged that during his term in office “we will have a roadmap so that the Malvinas Islands return to Argentine hands,” underlining that the South Atlantic Islands sovereignty claim is an includible mandate for all Argentines, but for this we need “a country with a vigorous and prosperous economy” and that respects its armed forces. Problem with cheap road maps is that they rarely actually take you to where you want to go. Often end up right where you started, might see some nice scenery on the journey - “ it is better to travel.hopefully than to arrive ” !

I think I see what he is doing...

My interpretation is that he has a check list:

    1. Leadership must be respected,
    2. Be a protagonist in world trade.
    3. Have armed forces capable of defending its territory.
    4. Make the country prosperous.
    5. Freedom to produce, work and trade.
    6. Respect for Malvinas Heroes and Armed Forces.

...he also has a check list of what not to do:

    7. Don't make vacuous statements in international forae.
    8. No corrupt and serial defaulters, who only care about their own interests.
    9. Argentina should not be a land of barbarians.
    10. Don't discredit the Armed Forces.

    Do 7-10 sound familiar?

So effectively he's saying Argentina should transform itself into a land of freedom, prosperity and respect. Presumably he realises that this is the essential requirement in order to start to gain the trust and win the minds over of Falkland islanders. So his path makes perfect sense. What he hasn't given is a timescale for this. I think he realises that rebuilding Argentina's reputation or trust will not be quick processes. He is correct. I'd give it at least 100 years...

What he has done is to kick the Falklands issue into the (very) long grass. He's not going to waste any effort on vacuous statements in international forae and instead focus of fixing the economy. When the opposition try to distract with the Falklands issue he can point to his (reasonable) path and remove it as a political weapon for his opposition.

He just follows Trump's playbook. The primer of the fascist far right that tries to dominate our America and Europe.

The problem is that when the fascists feel strong enough, when they think they are Capitoline Mars, they start to wage wars.

Sorry for the sincerity, but the first war this madman will wage will be on these islands, and with Trump's support.

A government like Milei's that leaves the Argentine people to their own devices has an uncertain future.

The more uncertain Milei's future is, the more likely there is to be a war. This is how fascism works.

Argentine fascists would love to invade Brazil. Unlikely. But, it is not unlikely that fascists will invade the islands.

Worse, there are many people in the Falklands who would support fascism!

Brasileiro, you should not make up comments about the political inclinations of the Falkland Islanders. I doubt you know many at all.

Those islanders that suffered and endured the illegal invasion and occupation of 1982 had a brief taste of how South American extremism works: why would they want a return to it?

Not a bright comment my friend.

First thing I noticed in the article was the word return. Not sure why he is using that word because there is nothing to return. Is he as thick as the rest of the previous leaders of Argentina. Think the word he was looking for was claim. That is all it is and will ever be a claim nothing more.
No differant if I were to say I claim a piece of Argentina. I can say it, but it actually means nothing.
So dream on Mr Melie and the rest of Argentina there is nothing to return .
However there is a road map you could build . One that says Argentina has no longer a claim to the area known as the Falkland Islands a British sovereign state.
That it will give up its sovereignty claim and start building a better trading relation with the British Falkland Islands. That would be a start to a road map of peace and prosperity.

No indoctrination in my facts, only history and geography facts, plus some valid concepts of international law that apply to the illegal occupation of the Islas Malvinas since 1833.
The UN cites the Islas Malvinas as 'territory in dispute', as it recognises Argentina's claim to its territories (eg Islas Malvinas).
Our veterans of Malvinas were and are heroes, they recovered the Islas Malvinas from the British Imperialism in 1982, if briefly.
Our country is the only country that brought the British army forces to its knees: this has been proved, and it will be re-affirmed when the closely guarded war documents are released (by the way, your own citizens are demanding that they should be released now). Then, the full extent of the damage that Argentina caused to your armed forces will be known, same as the war crimes commited by the so called Iron Lady, Thatcher, a war criminal, no less.
So keep laughing, but the truth will be known. Mark my words.

how did your country bring the British armed forced to its knees, please enlighten me, we were vastly outnumbered yet still whooped you bringing down your evil military junta in the process, something you should be thankful for, yes i will keep laughing because clowns like you do not know the truth in anyway shape or form. Buenos Aires would have gone to the ICJ many years ago, but they havent, because your claim would not stand up in court, Britain claimed the islands long b4 you existed, and b4 Spain and France fact, Argentina is not Spain. so either put up or shit up because you bore people to death with this nonsense, the truth is out there, but you cant see past the indoctrinated garbage you received as a kid,

That UPJ had changed the sovereignty of any Spanish territory at all by 1833 doesn’t stand up to basic common sense (CS) and historical fact (HF), even for indisputably Spanish territory..

As International Law (IL) isn’t retroactive, it’s CS UPJ’s current status in IL is irrelevant.

It’s CS if the sovereign doesn’t consent, UPJ changes sovereignty, only if it’s binding.

As it’s HF Spain didn’t begin to consent till 1836, it’s CS to change any Spanish sovereignty before 1833, UPJ had to become binding before 1833.

Besides the phrase UP, UPJ has nothing in common with Roman UP, and is different to UP Europeans had been using for many centuries before. UPJ has not existed since Roman times.

It’s UPJ of 1810 for S America and UPJ of 1821 for C America. These years have nothing at all to do with when UPJ became binding IL. In fact there’s proof UPJ didn’t become binding before the 20th century. After independence Brazil occupied vast territory on the Spanish side. Between 1850 and 1910 Brazil negotiated border treaties with its Hispanic neighbours. While the Hispanics argued for UPJ (based on Spanish/Portuguese border treaties), Brazil argued for UP de Facto (based on effective control). Brazil prevailed, but regardless of who prevailed the simple fact they argued for different ways to decide borders is irrefutable proof neither UPJ nor UPDF was binding. As UPJ didn’t bind Brazil between 1850 and 1910, it hadn’t bound Spain or the UK by 1833 or anytime during the 19th century. It bound Hispanic countries only in their relations with each other.

If it not UPJ by 1833, by anything else?

It’s CS a unilateral declaration of independence alone (UDI) (like Argentina’s) can’t change the sovereignty of any territory. No legal status is ever altered by a UD alone.

    Or UDI plus:
Right to Self-Determination(RSD)? No RSD in IL before 1945, so no.
Effective control (EC)? Argentina never had EC of the whole Falklands, so no.
Proximity, geography, or geology? Irrelevant in IL

“...Our country is the only country that brought the British army forces to its knees...” It only took twenty-one days for British forces to successfully remove 11 600 illegal immigrants. Granted, it took a while for them to get there, which is hardly surprising, but never once did the British forces lose a battle. Even the invasion, 5 000 invaders against a handful of truly heroic Royals, took several hours! Sort yourself out, buttercup. The Falklands never were and never will be Argentine!

“Political suicide for an Argentine politician to admit that the Falklands aren't Argentinian.”

Indeed and I think Milei realises this. He also realises that Argentina doesn't stand any chance of progress unless it changes its ways. So he's created a path that ticks both boxes and allows him to effectively ignore it because realistically it is nothing but a distraction. Like I said, he's kicked it into the long grass.

The British were not alone: they had the support of USA, the French, and even some South American countries, without them, they would have failed. Thatcher also pressured the French to stop the delivery of a few Exocet missiles to Argentina, and as a result they only used 5 of them during the war. Argentina stood alone, and with old equipment, but with honour, bravery and skill. The only help came from the Peruvian government, in the form of some warplanes, for which to this day the country is grateful.

The US is still lamenting dishonouring the OAS commitments, & the Monroe Doctrine by supporting the UK during the war with equipment, munitions, missiles, etc; their actions created distrust of their true aims & interest, damaging their credibility, standing & relation with the South Americans, & losing as a consequence whatever status & influence they had in the region. The reaction of the US & the British colonialism also created a shift of policy and strategic alignment in South America, unfortunately.

The recovery of the Islas Malvinas was a call for negotiations, as the constant Argentinian diplomatic protest to the British for the Islas Malvinas sovereignty were flagrantly ignored for 150 years.

Thatcher rejected Reagan’s calls for negotiations between both countries, and sent the British float, army and air forces to our shores. The Argentinian armed forces fought with antiquated equipment, & old airplanes, yet they sunk more than the 6 ships that the British declare. Apparently, the HMS Invincible wasn’t as invincible as its name declared: it is known that it was quietly towed to India to be repaired (that’s the info that circulated a few years back). Even the British commanders said they underestimated the Argentinian forces.

The Islas Malvinas are still considered a colonial territory in dispute by the world, & the UN. No illegal referendum/ false kelpers’ indigenous claims will change this.

“CHARTER OF THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES
The American States reaffirm the following principles:
    Article 12
The fundamental rights of States may not be impaired in any manner whatsoever.
    Article 13
The political existence of the State is independent of recognition by other States. Even before being
recognized, the State has the right to defend its integrity and independence, to provide for its preservation and prosperity, and consequently to organize itself as it sees fit, to legislate concerning its interests, to administer its services, and to determine the jurisdiction and competence of its courts. The exercise of these rights is limited only by the exercise of the rights of other States in accordance with international law.
    Article 19
No State or group of States has the right to intervene, directly or indirectly, for any reason whatever, in the internal or external affairs of any other State. The foregoing principle prohibits not only armed force but also any other form of interference or attempted threat against the personality of the State or against its political, economic, and cultural elements.”

”As late as 1886 the (US)Secretary of State found it necessary to inform the Argentine Government that as “the resumption of actual occupation of the Falkland Islands by Great Britain in 1833 took place under a claim of title which had been previously asserted and maintained by that Government, it is not seen that the Monroe Doctrine, which has been invoked on the part of the Argentine Republic, has any application to the case. By the terms in which that principle of international conduct was announced, it was expressly excluded from retroactive operation.”

My previous post shows how not a single square milimetre of Spanish territory could have changed sovereignty from Spain to any of its former colonies in the way Argentina claims sovereignty of the Falklands changed from Spain to Argentina. Whatever territory the ex colonies had brought under their sovereignty by 1833 or even many years later, it most definitely was not via uti possidetis juris. UPJ could not have changed any Spanish sovereignty whatsoever.

INCONVENIENT TRUTHS OF THE ISLAS MALVINAS

That's right TH, only thing you copied and pasted the text, but failed to notice that the spirit of the doctrine was about: that the intrusion from European countries eg the colonialist/imperialists on the political affairs of the AMERICAS, would be considered a threat to USA security. At that time, the South American countries also declared their independence, and shouldn't have had British interference (invasion), as they also had the right to preserve their territories as they were at the time of the colony. You can't cherry pick the letter of the doctrine, neither its meaning. That is why the Americans consider that by siding with the UK, their government dishonour the Monroe Doctrine, not to mention the Good Neighbour Policy (Eisenhower, if I'm not mistaken).

The Islas Malvinas are and were part of the South American continent, conquered by the Spanish Crown that defended its sovereingty citing that it comprised the land, its coasts, and islands. The Spanish expulsed the British invaders from on of the islands in 1771, from then on there was a Spanish Governor to the Islas Malvinas, in 1811 they passed to be administered, possessed, and protected by the new sovereign country of Argentina, which, as all other former colonies, had the right to maintain the integrity of its territories as they were at the time of the colony. After two failed attempts to invade Buenos Ayres, the British resorted to invade the Malvinas Islands. At that moment, Argentina had possession and sovereingty over the islands. For 150 years, & to the present, Argentina continues protesting the British illegal occupation of the Malvinas. These are facts, not indoctrication. In either case, you are the indoctrinated, the ones pretending that an obscure declaration and flag supposedly planted by the British gave them claims over our Malvinas.

There is no such thing as Spanish South America, there are modern day countries in South America that were part of the French, British, Portuguese, Dutch and Spanish Empires.

But let’s take the Facts made by our friend in turn

Spain never kicked Britain off the islands in 1771 or any other time. Spain never considered itself first to discover or populate the islands, and Spain left the islands voluntarily in 1810, all the inhabitants returned to Spain.

There was nobody on the islands to claim the territory for the United Provinces over 1000 miles away, nobody to chose to be Spanish or Uruguayan or Argentine or even British. The islands were all but empty for 18 years.

Then there was Vernets business for 3 years, it failed in 1831. It can be interpreted in many ways both then and now, but most left in 1831 and Vernet never returned.

Then we see Argentinas true claim, an attempted seizure of power in October 1832, the planting of an UP flag, and the positioning of a Governor. An odd thing to do if as Buttercup claims they had unquestioned sovereignty already for 21 years!!!

Of course the invasion failed, the governor was murdered and his wife raped by the crew, yet another awful stain in Argie history on the islands.

Had Britain arrived just a week later, Pinedo would already have left, and only the raping murderers would have remained. The eviction would be the same but Argentinas false version would have been harder to spin.

Pinedo was leaving anyway, so were all the civilians, the only people Britain forced to leave were the mutineers, who wanted to leave anyway but Pinedo wouldn’t take them.

Sadly buttercup the history is in Pinedos own logs, suggest you read them.
