By George Allison (*) - Recent moves by Argentina to renew and expand its military capabilities, including aspirations to acquire amphibious assault ships and a deal to buy retired F-16 fighter jets from Denmark, have raised eyebrows. The Falklands War of 1982 remains a defining event in the histories of the United Kingdom and Argentina. Read full article

Jun 22nd, 2024 - 09:55 am - Link - Report abuse +1However one must never underestimate Argentina. They are a rogue country with desires on expansion accross the whole south West Atlantic. They are devious and still live in the past.
Jun 22nd, 2024 - 12:03 pm - Link - Report abuse +1Remember how ignorance and complacency led to them invading the islands in 1982.
Yes the defence is stronger now, but does not stop Argentina attempting another military invasion.
They just like Britain do have supporters in other parts of the world and places like China and Russia while keeping the British and Americans active could slip in unnoticed.
In the interests of the whole of the south west Atlantic, not just the Falklands maybe it is time to invite America to establish themselves alongside Britain to protect this area of the Antarctic that is the ultimate goal of several powerful countries.
What is that saying. Forearmed is forewarned.
Britain may not be as ready as it was in 1982 due to other commitments around the world, but she still has a sting in her tail.
I personally believe the Russians attacking Ukraine and China molesting Tiawan is a game plan to take the eyes of the other important areas of the world .
We must always remain vigilant at all times.
Argentina is still a loose cannon in serious economical trouble and clutching at straws.
Watch this space I say.
The Argentine military is constantly monitored, any increase in activity will be noted, more Typhoons can be easily sent there and with the use of in flight refuelling they can be there with in hours,

Jun 23rd, 2024 - 09:18 am - Link - Report abuse +5You need to buy a dictionary and look up the meaning of ''ALL''
Chagos Advisory Opinion 25 Feb 2019
Para 161.
In the Court’s view, the law on self-determination constitutes the applicable international law during the period under consideration, namely between 1965 and 1968. The Court noted in its Advisory Opinion on Namibia the consolidation of that law: “the subsequent development of international law in regard to non-self-governing territories, as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, made the principle of self-determination applicable to all of them” (Legal Consequences for States of the Continued Presence of South Africa in Namibia (South West Africa) notwithstanding Security Council Resolution 276 (1970), Advisory Opinion, I.C.J. Reports 1971, p. 31, para. 52).
Comment: Note the highest court in the world did not say ‘some’ or ‘most’ they said the principle of self-determination is applicable to ‘’ALL’ non-self-governing territories.

Argi Zit, you are wrong, self determination does apply to ALL, get an education troll.

Dont be silly! Argentina has bloodied its nose and learnt its lesson.
Jun 24th, 2024 - 02:29 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Will not fight NATO again. Remember: We are now Junior Members of same,
Have just had joint maneuvers with the US Navy in the South Atlantic.
Have a good day!

Jun 24th, 2024 - 10:47 pm - Link - Report abuse +1You didn't fight NATO in 1982. NATO's remit only runs as far south as the Tropic of Cancer nor are you now junior members of NATO although there has been some discussions towards Argentina maybe becoming a 'partner' of NATO.
Deputy NATO Secretary General Mircea Geoană met Argentine Defence Minister Luis Petri at NATO Headquarters on Thursday (18 April 2024) for talks on working toward a partnership between the Alliance and Argentina.
I'm sure the USN had a good laugh when you turned up in your inflatable war canoes.
Of itself this will not significantly alter the military balance, going forward however there will be a need to review the level of forces deployed in the S. Atlantic.
Jun 26th, 2024 - 11:42 am - Link - Report abuse +2Given the strategic importance of the region and Argentina’s eternal desire to colonise it, things cannot be left to chance.

Jun 26th, 2024 - 09:36 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Please don’t deride a beaten foe, many lives were lost by soldiers believing they were fighting for a just cause, however wrong they may have been.
Argentina was driven to invading the Falklands by a corrupt dictatorship desperately trying to stay in power.
This only ended furthering our sovereignty plea a centuries away. Friendliness had worked much better.
The best result, thanks to British resilience and to Mrs Thatcher, was regaining our democracy.
Regarding NATO, no non British soldiers took part in the war. But inevitably Britain had NATO armament at disposal, such as the Sidewinder APM-9L air to air missile, a decisive weapon in protecting any Sea Harrier from being shot down in aerial combat. NATO global positioning also worked south of the Cancer Meridian.
What you write only goes to confirm that Argentina will not attempt military action against the Falklands again.
Mr. George Allison should abandone his fears in the sense that the Danish F-16 jets would be misused. Not a chance.
Viking, regarding NATO armament, the US provided some weapons, just like you got some of yours from France, plus help from others,, this is all irrelevant, the point is as you said, it was a war that should have never happened, you were correct in saying that, as you were when you said it was a corrupt dictatorship using the invasion to deflect the Argentine public from the real issues, the F16s are no match for a Typhoon, i actually thank you for saying Thatcher helped you return to democracy, i disliked the woman personally, but her resilience helped you, your Peronist governments since the end of the war have constantly tried to bully the islanders, it has failed, and will continue to fail, Argentine politicians need to grow up and stop lying, friendship towards them could bring advantages to Argentina, if and its a big if, oil is drilled for it could give some high paid jobs to some Argentinians, but for once i 90% agree with an Argentine poster,

Jun 29th, 2024 - 10:10 am - Link - Report abuse +1I've carefully reread my comment and nowhere do I 'deride a beaten foe'. All I did was correct your claims as it seems that like all Argentines you invent 'facts' to suit your argument.
