Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced Tuesday that he intended to create a National Climate Authority, Agencia Brasil reported. The new agency's mission would be to deal with extreme natural phenomena. Lula made these remarks in Manaus before dozens of environmental experts, as 61 of the 62 municipalities in the State of Amazonas face an emergency due to the drought. Read full article

here we go, another useless agency/authority to mislead those who can not justify the existing ones (IBAMA, ICMBIO among a probable long list sponsored by tax payers...) failure to comply with their basic role for decades... - either ways, why they keep promoting thermo-plants (coal, diesel, gas powered...) while their recently ideas to expand hydro (and quickly destroy more wildlife, besides favoring usual construction companies, the ones who confessed money corruption to the same political parties in power right now...) - embarassing....

You don't know anything. The construction companies that you claim have confessed to corruption in Operation Lava Jato made a hundred times more financial donations to parties of the ideological spectrum to which you belong, not to mine. Just look at the numbers, which are public.

But, without me wanting to defend the construction companies, these companies were destroyed by Lava Jato precisely because they were taking space from American construction companies in other countries (Peru, Ecuador, Suriname, Angola, etc.) and also in the United States itself (Miami Airport). Of course, Halliburton went to the Deep State for help.

You’re missing the point here, which is climate change driven by GHG emissions, where Brazil is the fourth biggest emitter today and the fifth largest emitter historically.

As Brazil is clearly doing very little to curb those emissions it makes sense to try and mitigate the drastic effects, good luck with that.

Don’t forget to set aside money for the ‘climate change loss and damage fund’, which Brazil will need to be a big contributor to.

I am skeptical about the climate. I don't think humanity is ready for a drastic change in attitude, especially because capitalism is averse to change.

Brazil is already doing more than its duty with regard to the climate. We have the cleanest energy matrix of all countries.

“The Brazilian energy matrix is made up of renewable and non-renewable energy sources. It is considered one of the most renewable in the world, with a higher percentage of renewable energy than the global average:
Renewable energy: In 2023, 83.79% of Brazil's electricity came from renewable sources. The main sources of renewable energy are hydraulic, biomass, sugarcane biomass, firewood, and charcoal.
Non-renewable energy: The main non-renewable energy sources are petroleum and natural gas.
Oil and natural gas: The share of oil and derivatives in Brazil's energy matrix has dropped from 39.2% to 35.1%, while natural gas has gone from 13.5% to 9.6%.
The Brazilian government is working to raise awareness of the importance of energy efficiency and the generation of clean and renewable energy.”

    https://www.gnpw.com.br/en/energy-matrix/current-state-of-the-brazilian-energy-matrix/

Regarding the protection of the Cerrado and Amazon biomes, the current government has significantly increased public budgets allocated to the re-equipment, monitoring and surveillance of these biomes. However, I suspect that capitalist interests, whether in the search for rare earths, mining, fossil energy sources and hardwoods, are already provoking the point of “no return”.

    The end!

Again you miss the point, energy generation isn’t the problem here, it’s only a small part of Brazil’s emissions.

As to the claim of ‘ protection of biomes’, the evidence does not support that claim, it contradicts its.

Here have a read of some data, you know facts!

    https://climaesociedade.org/en/changes-in-land-use-account-for-48-of-brazilian-emissions/

‘changes in land use, which include deforestation in all the Brazilian biomes, account for 48% of the total national emissions, followed by agriculture and livestock, with 27% of the gross emissions of the country’

‘land use total’ for Brazil is 75% of Brazil’s total emissions and showing no signs of falling.

Whilst you continue to blither on about ‘power generation’.

Avoiding the subject where you have no answer, as usual.

And that's it. It seems that the Amazon's days are numbered. In order for there to be any positive outlook, several trillion dollars would be needed for replanting and effective protection (5.5 million square kilometers of forest). Brazil does not have that money and will not submit to questions of sovereignty. So, it is as I said, Pugol: we have reached the crossroads of our species.

Climate change will occur on a scale from less aggressive “extreme event” to more aggressive “extreme event”. We can see that extreme events are already beginning to occur in abundance here in Brazil and in the Global South.

However, the worst will happen when the Gulf Stream, which originates here on the coast of Brazil, is paralyzed/interrupted. According to my calculations (lol) by the end of this decade the average temperature of the ocean current will increase by 1.5º C, enough to melt the Arctic in a few years, ten years I would say. After that, the Gulf Stream will be interrupted and a new Ice Age will occur in the Northern Hemisphere.

Assuming the gulf stream is interrupted and not replaced by something else (heat, like migrants, must go North somehow), how do you get an ‘Ice age’ when all the ice has long ago melted, eh?

Predictions here (UK) are for a warmer and wetter climate, with more extreme events. Time to build infrastructure that can cope.

    Shogun
We’ll see if you still think like that in 5-10 years time.

By the way, how is your man Putin’s war in Ukraine going?

Final victory in sight, is it?

The ice that melts due to the action of higher temperatures causes the water to migrate to a liquid state. The temperature of this water in a liquid state will still be very cold and concentrated, above all, in the northern hemisphere.

When the Arctic thaws, the cold water in a liquid state causes two phenomena that decisively interfere in the climate:

    1) interruption of the current of warm waters coming from the equator, causing cooling in the northern hemisphere;

    2) the distribution of the weight of the water that has melted in the Arctic will change the tilt of the axis of the planet Earth, causing less sunlight to fall on the northern hemisphere (remember that the weight of the frozen water in the Arctic is a determining factor in the tilt axis of the planet).

Pugol, these two factors will put an end to hot days for all areas of the planet that are at a latitude above the Pyrenees.

In my calculations (laughs again) the ice sheet that will cover the northern hemisphere will be more than 5 meters thick in the first thousand years.

Climate change has been going on for millions of years, man has very little to do with it

CO2 does not drive the climate Carbon emissions by man are a scam, the carbon credits and carbon sequestration is THE SCAM its all about government control.

Oh, as you mention Ukraine, how is your supply of weapons going, seems like the cupboard is bare.

There have actually been several glaciations over time. According to studies, all glaciations were caused by the greenhouse effect in processes that took hundreds of years to be completely triggered. The greenhouse effect was naturally caused by volcanic eruptions, mainly.

Today we are the volcanoes. Faster, more deadly. We release more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than any volcanic event in the history of the planet. We are causing the climate changes that forced a new glaciation.

We are faster. What would normally happen in a thousand years with volcanic activity, occurred in a few dozen years with human activity.

    Wishful thinking at best.

There is far more ice in the Antarctic than the Arctic and it is warming almost as fast.

What does that melting do to the ‘tilt’?

However, parts of British Antarctic Territory, like the Antarctic peninsula, will become habitable.

    Shogun
CO2 allows the atmosphere to retain more heat, and it only takes a very small amount to do it.

Currently the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has shot past the 400ppm level, that’s ‘parts per million’, compared to a per-industrial level of around 300ppm.

If there were no CO2 in earths atmosphere the average surface temperature would be -20C.

Go figure what happens when it reaches 500ppm

Oh and we’ve just sent 650 Lightweight Multirole Missiles to Ukraine, it seem that like NLAWs and StarStreak missiles, they are very effective.

Don’t think they will let the Ukrainians use the long rang missiles like Storm Shadows against targets deep inside Russia, but the Ukrainians have developed long range drones of their own capable of deep strikes.

Where Russia has nowhere near enough air defence capability to defend everywhere.

They don’t even have enough men to push the Ukrainians out of Kursk and maintain their offensive in the Donbas, where they are losing 2,000 men a day.

You’re confusing two different things, volcanoes cause Ice Ages by emitting SO2 and ash, both of which block sunlight thereby reducing surface temperatures.

CO2 on its own does not do that, or cause an Ice Age, it has the opposite effect.

    BS/ EDF
I did not say the US was running out of weapons

Take a deep dive into US military production and time scales of delivery

They cannot afford to be supplying the Ukraine at the levels needed due to their overseas commitments to protecting their bases from third party actors in the middle east and elsewhere, especially if the Russkies supply high tech weapons to these actors in retaliation for strikes on Russia by US UK made missiles, which you should also know that these missiles need US / UK Sat data and software to program/ launch them. The Ukies cannot do this on their own. also the proposed missiles do not have the range to hit everywhere in Russia they have a limited range The very reason the Russkies sometime ago moved their aircraft out of range of these missiles

In other words the cupboard is bare for the Ukraine

The science is straightforward, the CO2 measurements are accurate and verifiable. As to whether you currently think this is a problem or not? As I said we shall see what you think in 5-10 years time.

Just remember what I have told you here today, as the CO2 level increases (measured in PPM) so will the average temperature, also the frequency and intensity of extreme events, everywhere.

This is also very simple, straightforward and verifiable science.

Also, when was the last time the US fired a missile to protect a base anywhere in the world? A few here and there in the Red Sea.

If what you claim were true then the Ukrainians would be unable to keep fighting and their front lines would collapse. But this isn’t happening and shows no signs of happening.

Although it will be a least another year from now before the defence industries both sides of the Atlantic have ramped up production to meet the current demand, they are still playing catchup, but catchup they will.

Question is can the Russians keep up their offensive in the face of such heavy losses and what if any increase they can manage in their war production, which will probably fall as shortages bite.

Ukraine has long range drones and has used them against Russian oil refineries, they are still burning. They are developing longer range missiles apace.

Also, missiles do not need to use secure military ‘Sat data and software’, you can use any global navigation satellite system such as GPS, Galileo or BeiDou with car satnav software.

Or you can have internal guidance, which is very accurate these days and necessary as in any wider war satellites will be the first thing hit.

    Pugol-H
You are basically wrong with Climate and the influence of CO2 its the other way around and verifiable that temp rise comes first followed by a rise in CO2 but we will agree to disagree lol

Regarding missile guidance ( re Storm Shadow for example) to be used deep into Russia you are really wrong on this one.

Ukraine / Britain could fire storm Shadows without US approval or assistance but they
might be intercepted by Russ air defenses or be diverted off course the
missiles don't fly straight to their target defense officials say they are effectively threaded through the eye of a needle using GPS and terrain mapping data you could absolutely fry fire it unilaterally but it probably wouldn't survive in the contested electronically jammed environment that the Russians have. A British defense source has said ( Sunday Times ) Russian electronic warfare has rendered GPS s useless they jam it so it has to use another type of data set instead
which is American owned this is classified but likely to be linked to the ground mapping
capabilities in fact it goes beyond what we know because an article recently
in the Daily Telegraph told us that the Storm Shadow uses American
components and that it can only effectively penetrate Russian air
defenses we're not even talking about electronic warfare systems here we're
talking specifically about The Radars and missiles and all of those things if
they're accompanied by decoys which only the United States
produces so the United States has an effective Veto over the use of Storm
Shadows deep into Russia by Britain / Ukraine

I will repeat Ukraine cannot do any of this without US / UK personel these missiles do not use any old system as you seem to imply

Yes, we will have to disagree on the climate, but see what you think in 5-10 years time, that’s all it’s going to take, and remember this conversation.

As to Storm Shadows, for the Ukrainians using them does require UK/US agreement/cooperation, but as I said, ‘Don’t think they will let the Ukrainians use the long-range missiles like Storm Shadows against targets deep inside Russia’.

As much as anything they don’t want a misshape to make the Russians a present of a nearly intact one.

My point was the Ukrainians are developing long-range missiles of their own apace, missiles which will not require any UK/US agreement to use and will no doubt have both a satellite and internal guidance systems, as I also said ‘satellites will be the first thing hit’.

They do not need to be ‘state of the art’ as Russia simply can’t defend everywhere important in range. So far, the Ukrainians have hit all over the Donbass, Moscow and oil refineries deep in Russia using drones, nothing stopped them.

Longer range missiles are a game changer and Tovarich Putin knows it, which is why he’s threatening a wider war again, although they don’t have the resources to fight this one properly, never mind a much bigger one.

What technologies or capabilities is Russia trying to acquire that would be a game changer for them?

Or is it just more of the same hoping they overwhelm the Ukrainians before they exhaust themselves?

They still lack the forces to push the Ukrainians out of Kursk.
