Uruguay and Chile advanced their collaboration on policies related to memory, truth, and justice regarding past human rights violations.
Alejandra Casablanca, director of Uruguay's Secretariat for Human Rights for the Recent Past, visited Chile for meetings with Undersecretary for Human Rights Daniela Quintanilla Mateff to discuss various archival digitization and a memorandum of understanding for exchanging historical documents between the two countries.
She also met with Jan Jarab, the UN Human Rights representative for South America, to share Uruguay's recent progress in reparations for victims of state terrorism. Her agenda also included encounters with Chilean relatives of dictatorship victims and Uruguayan citizens exiled in Chile, who shared their experiences and concerns about memory, identity, truth, and justice.
Additionally, Casablanca toured significant memory sites in Santiago, including the Museum of Memory and Human Rights, former detention centers, and the National Stadium.
