PM Andy Burnham’s first conversation was with President Trump, whom he invited to visit Manchester

The Prime Minister also hoped that he would be able to show the President what Manchester had to offer during a visit in the future.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham spoke to the President of the United States, Donald Trump, shortly after taking office Monday afternoon, 20th July 2026. According to 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minister began by congratulating the President on a successful World Cup and agreed that England had an excellent tournament.

The Prime Minister also hoped that he would be able to show the President what Manchester had to offer during a visit in the future.

Setting out his vision as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, the Prime Minister said he would be focused on ensuring reindustrialization up and down the country to ensure good growth in every postcode.

The Prime Minister also underlined his commitment to defense and security and said ensuring the security of the UK and its Allies was at the top of his agenda.

The President then updated on the situation in the Middle East, and the Prime Minister outlined the UK’s commitment to securing the movement of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz to support global supply chains and drive down costs for businesses and families across the country. They concluded looking forward to speaking again soon.

The report from Washington said the newly appointed UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham and US President Donald Trump held a phone call immediately following Burnham's inauguration.

The conversation was described by Trump as “interesting” and going “very well,” and covered the long-standing UK-US alliance, trade, North Sea oil and gas, and stability in the Middle East.

Details of the call indicate that Burnham assured the US President of London's continued commitment to defense, explicitly confirming UK support for securing shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz.

Likewise on the North Sea Oil, and energy policy, Trump expressed strong interest in expanding oil drilling in the North Sea.

Finally Burnham used the introductory call to officially invite President Trump to visit Manchester, England, an offer Trump reportedly accepted. The visit may coincide with the 2027 G20 summit, which is rumored to be hosted in Manchester.

Other phone calls by PM Burnham on Monday afternoon included, Chancellor Merz. Germany; President Antonio Costa of the European Council; NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte; President of France, Emmanuel Macron; President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, and Ukraine’ president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
