But Brexit only expressed and exacerbated some of the structural problems the UK still faces today: cynicism, pessimism and political polarization; declining living standards for the poorest in society; a sense of social fragmentation; poorly maintained public services…”
No mention of ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION ???? responsible for the deterioraton of : - the NHS, the public housing policy, the country's reserves ; the immense increase in : - violent street crime, taxation, the frustration of legitimate English citizens being relegated to pariah status in their own country ???

The primary issue, although it is one of many, for the UK is the ever-expanding welfare budget, sacred to the woke left who blocked any real change.
Taxes and borrowing are already maxed out, any more and they will start to lose tax take and/or face rate increases on increased borrowing.
Which only leaves spending, which the last PM completely failed to contain, never mind reduce.
Until that circle is squared, nothing else can happen.
Illegal immigration, with all its consequences, is largely avoided by this government, because of the same woke left ideology.
However, Donald has shown that these things can be stopped, if the political will is there to do it.
No one crosses the US/Mexico border today.

Jul 23rd, 2026 - 05:23 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I'm sorry if by quoting the whole paragraph, I gave you the impression I was AGAINST Brexit.....NO WAY ! - I, and all my English friends who live in the UK (either permanently, or part-time) were/are greatly in favour of it. It was essential to get out from under the heavy yoke of Brussels.
That said, I agree with everything you wrote.
