Ha, I remember coming to (the Chilean side of) Tierra del Fuego in the eighties and finding fenced off parcels of tundra with skull and crossbones signs, warning of land mines. The occasional guanaco would hop over the fence, and 'kaboom', bits of flying guanaco! Also, an almost daily occurrence were the Chilean mirage jets flying at supersonic speed at tree level (there are no trees) over Cerro Sombrero toward the Argentine border and then, in classic macho cowboy style, veering vertical just before crossing into opposing airspace. All that AFTER the beagle channel dispute was supposedly settled with the pope's help. No wonder the Chileans sided with Britain during the Falkland re-conquest
