The Falkland Islands Government will begin dredging the approach channel and a berthing pocket at the Energy Dock Facility in Stanley Harbour on Monday, October 5, in works expected to last about three months, according to a notice to mariners issued by the harbour master.

The aim is to create a deeper approach channel and a berthing pocket at the facility, previously known as the Temporary Dock Facility. The notice, signed by Harbour Master Steuart Barlow, does not explain the change of name.

The work will be carried out by the jack-up barge Abeko Server 3, using a long-reach excavator to load two split hopper barges. The tug Afon Alaw will tow them to a spoil ground about six nautical miles east of Mengeary Point.

Operations will take place daily from 6am to 6pm, weather permitting. The harbour authority has asked vessels to pass at slow speed with minimum wash and to give the tug a wide berth during towing. Movements will be broadcast on VHF channel 10.
