The Falkland Islands Government Representative to the UK and Europe, Richard Hyslop, has placed a commemorative cross at the House of Commons Garden of Remembrance in London in memory of Falkland Islanders killed in both world wars and those who lost their lives in 1982.

The cross commemorates the 22 Islanders killed in the First World War, the 25 killed in the Second World War, and the 255 British Armed Forces personnel and three Islanders killed in the Falklands War, according to a statement from the Falkland Islands Government Office in London.

The Garden of Remembrance, installed each year in New Palace Yard outside the Palace of Westminster, was started in November 2021 by the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, in partnership with the Royal British Legion. It allows parliamentarians and representatives of Commonwealth countries and UK Overseas Territories to plant memorial crosses honouring Armed Forces personnel.

“I was honoured to place a commemorative cross in the House of Commons Gardens of Remembrance in memory of those Islanders killed in both World Wars and those killed in the liberation of the Islands in 1982,” Hyslop said. “We must remember the service and sacrifice of those individuals who gave so much to protect the freedoms we enjoy today, we will remember them.”
